Batman/Dylan Dog #1 delivers a flashy start with some style

Batman/Dylan Dog #1

Batman and Dylan Dog cross paths as two of their lethal nemeses, The Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime of Gotham City, and Professor Xabaras, have an unknown history! Batman/Dylan Dog #1 has Joker traveling to London to seal a hellish pact with Dylan Dog’s nemesis, the Mephistophelian Xabaras!

Written by Roberto Recchioni, Batman/Dylan Dog #1 features a European adventure as Batman heads to London chasing the Joker. Dylan Dog isn’t the most well known character and for me, this was an introduction. I know of the name, but that’s about it. So, it was interesting to read the comic to see how easy it is to figure out Batman’s latest team up. And thankfully, Batman/Dylan Dog #1 does an excellent job of welcoming new readers unfamiliar with the Nightmare Investigator.

To me, Dylan Dog is John Constantine without the magic. Recchioni presents a character who is charming and full of style but a massive whiff of bullshit is underneath it all. Broke, who knows where the next dollars are coming from, and a reputation that seems to be shaky, we get a protagonist who feels very pulp overall bringing Batman back to his adventure roots.

Batman/Dylan Dog #1 definitely has that roots feel. There’s a sense of old reels that you might watch before a film, with a story involving zombies and a sense of B-Movie fun about it all. The comic does a solid job in every aspect of the story, weaving in Dylan Dog and Batman’s worlds, introducing characters, setting up personality conflict, and delivering action. There’s just a lot of fun within the comic and that extends to the art.

Gigi Cavenago and Werther Dell’Edera team for the art with color by Gigi Cavenago and Giovanna Niro and lettering by Pat Brosseau. The comic looks fantastic and perfectly matches the tone of the writing. Everyone looks great and the comic has a style that feels like a blend of European comics and a traditional Batman comic. The Joker especially looks fantastic and the tone of the visuals just nails the pulp aspect of it. The comic is beautiful from the design of the characters to the colors, it’s just great overall and a visual treat.

Batman/Dylan Dog #1 is a hell of a start. The comic delivers two characters in Dylan Dog and Batman/Bruce Wayne that are so perfect together in a story that makes sense and doesn’t feel forced. It has a look and flair that is a throwback to pulp adventures and Batman team-ups of the 90s. It’s a fun comic that even readers unfamiliar with Dylan Dog can enjoy. A solid debut that has us already wanting more of this new dynamic duo.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #304 continues a hell of a launch arc for the series written by Larry Hama. Continuing his impressive run, the series has pivoted from the previous arc, moving onto the next action packed story which sees factions come together, others prepare for battle, and a new player come to the board.

Hama has done a masterful job of continuing what has been running for quite some time but also providing a point where new readers might want to check out the series with its new publisher. The previous issues have blended what was with what’s coming. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #304 is squarely in the new arc taking the events of the previous issue to points where some are expected and others not so much. Overall, it’s a dance we’re seeing as Cobra, Serpentor, and G.I. Joe are all jockeying and trying to gain intelligence on each other. It’s an interesting issue seeing the three factions prepare and figure out what to do. Then there’s that ending… and an unexpected player.

What’s great as well is Hama is having some fun with the new formed alliance between Serpentor and Revanche. That’s enhanced by the art of Chris Mooneyham. Mooneyham is joined by Francesco Segala on color, Sabrina Del Grosso as flatter, and Pat Brosseau‘s lettering. The comic’s style has a bit more grit to it than the previous run, giving it a more adult and action packed look. The designs for the new troop types and Serpentor and Cobra Island’s mutated beings are fantastic balancing horror, sc-fi, and G.I. Joe’s grounded aspects. Scenes go from calm to action in no time and the art captures the excitement of it all.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #304 is another fantastic issue for a series that is a welcome return. Everyone is firing with every release and longtime readers should be excited for the new found energy. New readers will be sucked in by the art and the ease of understanding of what’s going on. The series, despite 300 issues in, feels fresh, and ready to be discovered and enjoyed.

The Butcher’s Boy is a haunting new horror comic set against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest

Dark Horse Comics presents a classic slasher/psychotropic folk horror story to sink your teeth into in The Butcher’s Boy. This new Lovecraftian horror series combines elements of tales such as Midsommar and The Evil Dead, and comes from the creative team behind The Last Siege. The Butcher’s Boy is a four-issue series features story by, Landry Q. Walker and Pannel Vaughn, with art and cover art by Justin Greenwood, interior and cover art colors by Brad Simpson, and letters by Pat Brosseau.

Tucked away far down the backroads of the Pacific Northwest countryside, an entire town fell victim to the brutal cleaver of the Butcher of La Perdita. But that was more than a hundred years ago, and since that time the generational nightmare of murder and meat has been reduced to morbid clickbait folklore for bored travelers to share online.

Yet some say the Butcher still haunts the streets at night, seeking fresh meat for his larder. Is this a true Lovecraftian horror? Or just the feverish dreams of a mentally unstable serial killer? Six friends on a road trip are about to find out…

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303 delivers solid action as alliances are formed

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303

Who’s allied with who? Who’s making a move on who? With four different groups all making moves, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303 is a fun issue that begins the next arc.

There feels like there’s a new energy when it comes to G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. While the series continues the story Larry Hama began so many years ago, with a new art team and new publisher, it feels a bit fresh. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303 continues the chaos that has been stewed the last few issues as the various forces make their moves.

Serpentor Khan has a new ally with Revanche and is quick to put it all to work and a test as various teams make their move to test out capabilities and also see what others are up to.

Hama makes the issue feel like a game of chess in some ways with each group making moves and attempting to figure out what the opposing force is up to. This leads to some exciting moments and an ending that’s a clear fake out. There’s also something kind of fun and intriguing with Serpentor teamed with Revanche, an almost classic horror movie monster force teamed with advanced AI. It’s a combo that works and works well.

That’s partly due to Chris Mooneyham. With color by Francesco Segala, flatter Sabrina Del Grosso, and letterer Pat Brosseau, the comic looks fantastic. The Joes look like their classic serious self but it’s Revanche and Serpentor’s forces that stand out. Revanche has a great look to them, invoking some familiar technology based villains. Serpentor’s forces have a tinge of horror to them but it’s not over the top distracting. Instead it looks more like a disease that’s corrupted those infected.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303 is a solid comic. It’s somewhat predictable in some ways but enjoyable and fun. The art is top notch and it moves the story arc along with some pretty big moments that’ll play out for some time. It’s not too late to dive into this next step for G.I. Joe and it’s well worth the dive in.
