Amy Devlin And Rascal Raccoon The Latest Oni Press Characters Jumping From Page To Screen

AMY DEVLIN AND RASCAL RACCOON THE LATEST ONI PRESS CHARACTERS JUMPING FROM PAGE TO SCREEN

Oni Press is excited to announce that two more of their comic books have been set-up for adaptations for television and motion pictures. The Amy Devlin Mysteries series of graphic novels is in development at the E! Network as part of their inaugural slate of original script-driven programming, while the original graphic novel Rascal Raccoon’s Raging Revenge has been optioned by Warner Bros. as a special effects-driven comedy helmed by the director of A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas. Both properties have Oni Press’ sister company, Closed on Mondays, attached as producers.

“We’re extremely pleased with how things are coming together for both of these books,” said Oni Press publisher Joe Nozemack. “They both represent the varied creative philosophy behind the Oni Press publishing line: unique, creator-driven projects representing the best in genre fiction.” Nozemack was co-producer on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and is actively involved inthe adaptations of Oni Press titles.

The Amy Devlin Mysteries books are written by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, veteran television writers with credits on a wide variety of shows, including Kim Possible and Arli$$. They are also known for having worked with actress Rashida Jones to bring her story Frenemy of the State to comics. Art for the Amy Devlin books has been by Christopher Mitten and the team of Dove McHargue and Kate Kasenow.

The series was announced as being in development with the E! Network as E! makes its move into creating original scripted content. The series, which features twenty-somethingdetective Amy Devlin in a new take on the crime-scene procedural, is being spearheaded by writer/director Daniel Barnz, whose film Won’t Back Down is due in theaters in September. Barnz will executive produce with Closed on Mondays’ Eric Gitter and Andy Bourne.

Gitter is also on the production team for Rascal Raccoon’s Raging Revenge, along with Closed on Mondays’ Noah Greenshner. The parody of classic animation is heading to Warner Bros., the pioneering studio behind many of the cartoons that inspired writer Brendan Hay and artist Justin Wagner to create the comedy graphic novel. Hay has previously written for The Simpsons, Robot Chicken, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Closed on Mondays is partnering with Ken Franchi and Todd Strauss-Schulson of Ulterior Productions. Writer Matt Fogel is attached to craft the screenplay, and Strauss-Schulson, who previously lensed A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, will direct. The story of an animated raccoon whose life is turned upside down when he finally succeeds in killing his cartoon nemesis will be a combination of live-action and CGI.

“Both Amy Devlin and Rascal Raccoon are books that Oni Press is extremely proud of’” Nozemack concluded. “These new ventures will introduce a fresh audience to the material, while also giving the books’ fans a new way of looking at the stories they already love. We couldn’t be happier with the partners we’ve made and the possibilities going forward.”

Oni Press Continues Its Tradition Of Releasing Issue #1 On FCBD With Bad Medicine

Official Press Release

ONI PRESS CONTINUES ITS TRADITION OF RELEASING ISSUE #1 ON FCBD WITH BAD MEDICINE

On Saturday May 5, 2012, Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) will be returning for its tenth year running, and Oni Press is proud to have been a participant since its inception. This year, Oni Press is pleased to have been selected as both a Gold and Silver sponsor. Oni will be continuing its tradition of launching a brand new series with an issue #1, and with bringing family friendly comics to kids of all ages!

In keeping with their tradition of launching a brand new series on FCBD, Oni Press is giving away issue #1 of their new ongoing series Bad Medicine. Written by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir (New X-Men: Academy X, Batman Confidential) and artist Christopher Mitten (Wasteland, Criminal Macabre), Bad Medicine is a full color comic book about a doctor working on the fringes of the medical industry. When unexplainable illnesses strike and regular medical procedures can’t handle the treatment, Dr. Randal Horne is called in to take over.

Oni Press will be releasing issue #1 as a freebie for Free Comic Book Day, and then offering the second issue of the monthly series—alongside a retail version of #1— the following month. Both will go on sale June 13.

“This is not a zero issue, it’s not a preview or an advanced look, this is the actual issue #1 of Bad Medicine. This follows the model that we used to launch The Sixth Gun two years ago and Spontaneous last year,” Oni marketing director Cory Casoni explained. “At Oni Press, we believe that Free Comic Book Day is about Free Comics! By launching a brand new series on FCBD, we’re creating a no-risk situation for new readers to try out a new monthly comic book, and the best part is, they only have to wait a few weeks to read the next installment! For those who miss Bad Medicine #1 on Free Comic Book Day but hear from their friends how awesome the series is, they get a second chance to start from the beginning when we issue a re-release of Bad Medicine #1 on the same day Bad Medicine #2 is released in June!”

For the next generation of comic readers and the kids at heart, Oni Press is pleased to present a younger reader title, suitable for all ages, with Yo Gabba Gabba! Based on the popular Nickelodeon television show created by W!ldbrain, this 32-page, full-color comic book offers a sample of stories featured in the Oni Press hardcover anthology Yo Gabba Gabba! Comic Book Time. Oni will also be offering discounted pricing on the anthology so that retailers and fans who really love the Yo Gabba Gabba Free Comic Book Day sampler can take pickup the Yo Gabba Gabba! Comic Book Time hardcover!

Creators featured in this sample include: Michael Allred, Jamie S. Rich, Jarrett Williams, Kali Fontecchio, Frank Pittarese, Evan Dorkin, and Sarah Dyer. The entire Gabbaland gang is featured: Muno, Brobee, Foofa, Toodee, Plex, and the ever-awesome DJ Lance Rock. There is also an extra-special Super Martian Robot Girl adventure by Dorkin and Dyer.

Yo Gabba Gabba! is one of the select “Gold Titles” being offered for Free Comic Book Day. The Gold Titles are the most widely distributed of the giveaways and appear in every participating comic book shop world wide.

Fans can read previews of both comics at the Free Comic Book Day Website:

PLAY BALL HITS A HOME RUN AT ONI PRESS

PLAY BALL HITS A HOME RUN AT ONI PRESS

This April, Oni Press is ready to take to the field with their latest original graphic novel, Play Ball. From the acclaimed writing team of Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir (The Avalon Chronicles, Amazing Agent Luna) and drawn by newcomer Jackie Lewis, Play Ball is an inspiring coming-of-age sports story that will appeal to dreamers of all ages.

Dashiell Brody is a teenaged girl who has grown up loving America’s national pastime, baseball. Dashiell has recently moved with her mother and sister to a new town, and that means a new school and new opportunities. Rather than get stuck playing on the girl’s softball team, Dashiell wants to play for the school’s championship baseball team—only the boys aren’t quite ready for this speedy shortstop. When Dashiell tries out for the main team, there is resistance, but she sticks to her guns and earns a chance to prove herself on the field.

“Having someone stand in your way when there is something you really want is a universal experience,” explained Weir. “It happens to all of us. For girls, there can be the added obstacle that someone might want to stop you just because you weren’t born a boy. Team sports is one place where this can still be quite common. Every kid wants to play on a team, and every kid wants to be on the best team—and that should be regardless of gender.”

“The sports genre is one of the best places to tell classic underdog stories,” DeFilippis added. “The fun thing about Play Ball is that we’re turning that on its head a little bit. Dashiell is considered the underdog, but she’s actually the best player on the team. She just needs a chance to prove it. Put her on the field, and, boy, watch out.”

While DeFilippis and Weir are veterans in the comics and television industry–they’ve previously written for HBO, Disney Channel, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics, as well as a several creator-owned books for Oni Press—Play Ball’s artist, Jackie Lewis, is new to the industry. She is a graduate of the prestigious comics program at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

“Up until recently, many considered comics to be an all-boy’s club,” said editor Jill Beaton, “but Jackie is part of a burgeoning generation of female cartoonists that is changing all that. It only made sense that we would have a woman join us for Play Ball. She brings a special passion to the project, and her wonderful artwork really makes the action on the diamond come alive.”

In addition to drama on the field, Play Ball features plenty of drama off of it, as well. “Dashiell has to contend with many different challenges,” DeFilippis continued, “it’s not just about batting averages. She has to deal with her father living far away, which is particularly hard for her since he’s the one who taught her about baseball. Dashiell has to get along with her sister, who ends up dating one of the guys on the team. She also has to make new friends at her new school, which isn’t always going to be easy. When you rock the boat, you risk knocking others overboard.”

“It was important to us that the book is not about the games,” Weir concluded. “We wanted to show what it’s like to have a driving passion and how you balance that with all aspects of growing up and getting along. It’s all about team work, in uniform and out of it.”

Play Ball is a 144-page, black-and-white graphic novel, 6” x 9” hardcover, coming in April 2012. The book retails for $19.99.

Review – Frenemy of the State #4

Bookmark and Share

Frenemy #4 Preview pg (1)Frenemy of the State has been a fun read and the fourth issue is no exception.  It’s not perfect, but it’s that key thing, fun and keeps on improving.  Frenemy of the State #4 which was written by Christina Weir, Nunzio DeFilippis and Rashida Jones and art by Jeff Wamester picks up with Ariana in hot pursuit of the nuke.

Ariana’s two worlds have now officially collided! Her life in shambles because of her cover story, Ari gets a surprise from her mother that may prevent her from taking part in her mission. Oh, and did we mention the nuclear bomb?

There’s great entertainment with Ariana having to balance her two lives.  It’s not like she can tell her family, which forces her to look unstable.  She also knows the people she has to deal with and uses that to her advantage.

And there’s a great sense of “girl power” here, which is nice to see.  Action, mixed with humor, the series has matured nicely, and hopefully we continue to see improvement as issues continue coming.

Review – Frenemy Of The State #3

Frenemy of the State #3 CoverIt’s the third issue in and I actually think the series is getting better.  Frenemy of the State #3 which was written by Christina Weir, Nunzio DeFilippis and Rashida Jones and art by Jeff Wamester picks up where the second issue’s cliffhanger left off.  Ariana is surrounded and it’s not looking good.  The issue flashes between the present and her training a nice gimmick that’s pulled off well.  The issue also builds to one hell of an ending.

Celebutante Ariana Von Holmberg is in over her head chasing a lead during her first mission as a secret agent for the CIA. Will her training save her from jihadists out for blood? Will she get caught and sold into white slavery!? Will she score a totally SWEET kafiyah?!

I thought the first two issues were decent, but the third one starts to really pull off the double duty of a celebutante who’s undercover for the CIA.  How does a former bad girl deal with her image and keeping cover?  There’s a lot of potential with that and as seen by this issue’s ending the authors are going to play with that.  And in this particular instance, it’s great.

The series took a bit to get going, but it’s hitting it’s stride.  The issue is a good mix of action and “quieter” moments.  This is the perfect series for a tween girl who wants to get into comics but spandex and big muscles aren’t their thing.  Very entertaining and well worth the read.
