PANELS

CBLDF: After the Code
Friday,
5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Room 236/238

Earlier this year, the Comics Code Authority was shut down.  For more than fifty years the Code seal has served as a vivid reminder of the brutal government investigation and self-censorship that decimated the industry in the 1950s. It also stood as a standard that led to the censorship of a wide variety of comics. As the Code fades into history, the CBLDF moderates a discussion about how the Code impacted comics and the threats that remain in its absence. The panel will include Sergio Aragones, Mike Friedrich, Paul Levitz, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Marv Wolfman, and will be moderated by CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein.

Also on Friday:
Spotlight on Terry Moore
1:00-2:00
Room 236

Don’t miss this opportunity to catch up with one of the comic industry’s favorite indie creators! Charles Brownstein (CBLDF) will talk with Terry Moore about the finale of his latest series, ECHO, as well as exciting new projects slated for the coming year. This panel is always a fan favorite! Don’t miss it!

Watch great live art made before your eyes, on the big screen and bid to win the pieces to support a great cause!  The CBLDF Live Art Jam features Tom Hodges (Star Wars), Carla Speed McNeil (Finder), and Terry Moore (Echo), plus special guests.  Get an inside look at the creative act and win great art at the CBLDF Live Art Jam!

All the work the CBLDF does is possible because of supporters like you! Be sure to stop by booth 323 during WonderCon, April 1-3, 2011, to become a member, join us for a signing, pick up exclusive premiums, or just to share a few words of support!

VANCOUVER | Wed May 18th | Vancouver Public Library | With Lucky’s
SEATTLE | Thur May 19th | Elliot Bay

Paying

Chester Brown has never shied away from tackling controversial subjects in his work. As the cartoonist of the autobiographical The Playboy and the biography Louis Riel, Paying For It is a natural progression for Brown as it combines the personal and sexual aspects of his autobiographical work with the polemical drive of Louis Riel. Brown calmly lays out the facts of how he became not only a willing participant in but also a vocal proponent of one of the world’s most hot-button topics–prostitution. Paying For It offers an entirely contemporary exploration of sex work–from the timid john who rides his bike to meet his escorts, wonders how to tip so as not to offend, and reads Dan Savage for advice, to the modern-day transactions complete with online reviews, seemingly willing participants, and clean apartments devoid of cliches street corners, drugs, or primps.

Paying For It is a book that stands for itself and will be the most talked about graphic novel of 2011. In stores this May.

Hardcover, 5.5 x 7.5, Black & White, 272 pages, ISBN: 9781770460485, $24.95 US / $25.95 CDN

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT “PAYING FOR IT”

Paying

“PAYING FOR IT is a very enlightening book, as well as being entertaining…{Chester Brown} is a very skillfull artist in that way.”–R. CRUMB, from his introduction to PAYING FOR IT

“In PAYING FOR IT, Chester Brown not only makes a compelling case for the decriminalization of sex work but he also seems like an excellent client. Sex workers and sex worker rights advocates couldn’t ask for a better ally. A must read in the canon of sensible and sensitive voices making a case against prurient ideology-based rhetoric about consensual sexual behaviour.”–SASHA, Nationally syndicated sex columnist, playwright and sex worker rights activist.

“The self-aware john, a quirky and surprisingly realistic guy, is everywhere, but he’s also been silent and overshadowed by his belligerent deluded brothers. PAYING FOR IT is a fascinating modern (and enjoyable) response to that anonymous Victorian sex classic My Secret Life. The characters encountered here evoke Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. Chester Brown’s emotional honesty is riveting. This is what sex ed looks like when we refuse to stop learning.”–TRACY QUAN, author of Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl and Diary of a Jetsetting Call Girl

“Chester Brown is perhaps the most transparent, honest and relevant voice remaining in contemporary comics, and this is, to my mind, his most powerful and affecting work to date. PAYING FOR IT explores life in the world’s oldest customer-base, and does so with heart, intelligence, and a complete lack of sentiment or self-justification. Rewarding repeated readings, this book will love you long time.” –ALAN MOORE

“I’ve loved Chester Brown’s work since the early days of Yummy Fur. He started out as a remarkable cartoonist telling strange stories that slowly became, over time, increasingly personal.

PAYING FOR IT is as personal as you can get. It’s a clear-eyed, not-even-slightly-erotic, compulsively readable, sometimes painfully honest account of his time, reasons and experiences paying for sex. I learned things about Chester from reading this, and I learned things about sex-workers, and about the world, and, oddly, I think I learned things about myself.

The argument about when or whether comics had grown up ended when people started making comics for grown-ups. This is one of them. PAYING FOR IT is the kind of book that will engage your mind and force you to think about things in ways you may never have done before. Chester would probably like that. And if you find yourself arguing with the page, or with the author’s notes, I think Chester would probably like that too.”–NEIL GAIMAN

Mayor Bloomberg And Marvel Enetertainment Unveil “Spider-Man, You’re Hired” – A Special Print And Digital Comic Promoting New York City’s Free Job Placement Resources

Official Press Release

The City of New York

Office of the Mayor

New York, NY 10007

Mayor Bloomberg And Marvel Entertainment unveil “Spider-Man, You’re Hired” – a Special print and Digital comic promoting

New York city’s FREE job PLACEMENT resources

Comic Book Available Free from Marvel Comics’ App on iTunes and in the

New York Daily News as a Public Service at No Cost to the City

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver, Small Business Services Commissioner Robert W. Walsh, Marvel Entertainment Editor-in-Chief and Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, New York Daily News CEO Bill Holiber and Editor-in-Chief Kevin Convey, and Spider-Man today announced the creation of “Spider-Man, You’re Hired,” an all-new comic book highlighting City resources available to New Yorkers who are navigating the job market. The comic, which features an unemployed Peter Parker starting his job search, is the Administration’s latest effort to connect out-of-work to New Yorkers to job training and placement services. It was inspired by the NYC Media original television production, “Job Hunt,” a ten-part series on how the City is helping New Yorkers to get back to work – focusing on Workforce1 Career Centers, libraries and other City services. Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at Midtown Comics’ new store in Lower Manhattan.

“New York City provides free, first-rate job training and placement assistance, and we want every New Yorker that needs help to know about it, so we asked Spider-Man to help us spread the word,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “One of the reasons we created the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment was to find new ways to connect with New Yorkers. Our partnership with Marvel and the Daily News is a fun and innovative way to let everyone know about the web of resources the City has to offer New Yorkers that need job assistance.”

“Marvel’s proud to team-up with the City of New York to help inform all New Yorkers about the free services designed to assist them in finding employment. We couldn’t ask for two better leading men than Spider-Man and Mayor Bloomberg,” said Marvel Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada“Because even New York’s most famous Super Hero needs a day job!”

“We are always looking for new ways to reach people in all forms of media about the job resources offered by the City,” said Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. “Working with Marvel, the Daily News and Small Business Services on this special ‘Spider-Man: You’re Hired’ edition is a tremendous example of how the government can work with the private sector to really help people.”

“Thank you to Mayor Bloomberg, Commissioner Oliver, the New York Daily News and the City’s great new partner, Marvel,” said Small Business Services Commissioner Walsh. “This is an exciting collaboration and a real super hero effort that will ensure that many more New Yorkers know about the City’s excellent free employment services. I’m glad that Peter Parker is helping us to spread the word to jobseekers that visiting a Workforce1 Career Center can help them get a job in this tough market.”

“As New York’s Hometown Newspaper, the Daily News is proud to use our printed pages and the power of NYDailyNews.com to help New Yorkers, like unemployed Spider-Man alter-ego Peter Parker, find work,” said New York Daily News CEO Bill Holiber. “The City of New York and the Daily News have been tremendous partners on this and other projects – such as the “Hire Me” series that partnered with the “Job Hunt” show and caller helpline – by combining our resources to help New Yorkers get to work. In today’s Daily News, not only will New Yorkers find a special edition of the Spider-Man comic created by Marvel Entertainment, but we’ve also provided readers with a guide to the city’s services for job searches, training and research. We hope our efforts not only help one of New York’s most famous super heroes find work, but other ‘real’ New Yorkers, as well.”

The recently created Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment is identifying and implementing new ways to let New Yorkers know about City resources available to them. To promote the City’s free workforce training and job placement services, the Office worked with Marvel Custom Solutions, a special division within Marvel Entertainment that develops innovative programs addressing the specific needs of partners and philanthropic interests, to create a special edition Spider-Man comic book featuring Mayor Bloomberg.

The full-color, eight-page comic features an out-of-work Peter Parker, frustrated and at a loss about how to find a new job. A serendipitous meeting with the Mayor helps to put him on the right track. The unique comic is available for free download online via iTunes through the popular Marvel Comics app (www.marvel.com/marvelcomicsapp). The New York Daily News is also printing a special edition of “Spider-Man: You’re Hired” at no cost to the City, appearing in over 600,000 papers with a list of all the Workforce 1 Centers in the City where the comic will be available.

The Department of Small Business Services oversees a system of nine Workforce1 Career Centers located throughout the five boroughs, which provide New York City jobseekers with a full array of free employment services, including job preparation, training and job placement in a professional setting.  Since 2004, the Department of Small Business Services transformed a system that was placed New Yorkers in about 500 jobs a year into one that placed New Yorkers in more than 25,000 jobs in 2009. To find a Workforce1 Career Center and learn about services, New Yorkers can visit NYC.gov or call 311.

Two additional one-page comics have also been created in conjunction with this launch. In the first comic, Spider-Man can be seen at various well-known New York City attractions describing the great free job services that the City offers. Workforce1 Career Centers are located throughout the five boroughs and provide job seekers with a full array of employment services, including job placement, career counseling, professional development, and access to training opportunities.  In the second comic, Spider-Man takes his friend Mary Jane to learn more about the “Made in NY” Production Assistant Training Program. Developed in partnership between the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and Brooklyn Workforce Innovations, this free program helps diverse New Yorkers gain access to entry level positions in the entertainment industry. The program is currently recruiting for applicants.

The one-sheet comics are available for download on NYC.gov and can also be seen on phone kiosks and other signage throughout the city.  A public service announcement featuring the comics can also be seen in City taxi cabs and on NYC life (channel 25) and NYC gov (channel 74), the City’s government station. The public service announcement, which debuted on Wednesday, explains the project and encourages people to download the comic.  The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment has worked closely with the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission to ensure that the public service announcement can be seen by as many people as possible. It can also be viewed on the NYC Media Video On Demand Player available on nyc.gov.

“Job Hunt” – produced by NYC Media, the official television, radio and online network of the City of New York and part of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment – offers expert advice about navigating the job market and features New Yorkers who have taken advantage of City resources. In each episode of “Job Hunt,” a panel of experts and recruiters shares tips on resume building, interview skills, and landing a new job. Episodes are available to watch online at NYC.gov on the NYC Media Video on Demand Player.

ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP
Instructors: R. SIKORYAK and KRIOTA WILLBERG
4 sessions, Mondays October 18 & 25, Nov. 1 & 8
6:30-9:00 pm
$275 tuition | $250 for MoCCA members

How many times have you said to yourself, “I’d love to make my drawing more realistic—but anatomy is hard!”?

Well, this is your chance to take the most exciting, informative drawing course you’ll ever find, taught by the accomplished teaching team of R. SIKORYAK (RAW magazine, The Daily Show) and KRIOTA WILLBERG (The Swedish Institute). Here’s what the duo says about their workshop:

“A lot can be communicated about a person or animal through their physical appearance. Understanding the way the body looks and works helps illustrators draw their characters so that the artwork conveys personality. This course will teach students how to create real or imaginary characters—in any style—that are consistent and believable.”

Through PowerPoint presentations, in-class exercises, and at-home assignments, students will learn to see and draw the structures and tissues that give the body shape and character. Willberg will—literally!—draw on live models to trace muscle groups and bony landmarks. Sikoryak will demonstrate the application of anatomical understanding to any cartooning style. Students will practice drawing from live models in class and learn to apply the lessons to their own characters.

NOTES:
(1) Students will need to bring drawing materials—charcoal, pencils (colored or not), erasers, paper [11×14 (recommended) or 18 x 24, but not bigger]. No markers, please. Students should work with inexpensive materials they are most comfortable with. The class isn’t about creating finished drawings as much as it is about sketching.

(2) As this is a life-drawing class, nude models will be employed.

R. SIKORYAK is the author of the recently released Masterpiece Comics. His cartoons and parodies have appeared in RAW, Drawn and Quarterly, Nickelodeon Magazine, the New Yorker, and MAD, among many other publications; on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and in The Daily Show Presents America (The Book); and in Our Dumb World: The Onion’s Atlas of the Planet Earth. He’s drawn for Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse. Sikoryak is in the speakers program of the New York Council of the Humanities and teaches in the illustration department at Parsons School of Design. Since 1997, he has presented his cartoon slide show series, Carousel, around the United States and Canada.

KRIOTA WILLBERG teaches anatomy for cartoonists and illustrators at The Center For Cartoon Studies, anatomy in the dance department of Marymount Manhattan College, pathology and massage therapy at the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences, and has taught at Bard College, NYU, and The School of Visual Arts. She has studied personal training and exercise. Willberg is an interdisciplinary artist, a lecturer and blogger about film and medicine (thecinematologist.blogspot.com), and a filmmaker. Her films include the dance mockumentary, The Bentfootes (2007).

HAND ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS
INSTRUCTORS: R. SIKORYAK and KRIOTA WILLBERG
1 session:  MONDAY, November 15
6:30-9:00 PM
$70 tuition | $60 for MoCCA members
[Plus: 25% DISCOUNT for students who have taken the ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP either this semester or in spring 2010: $52.50|$45]

An introduction to one of the trickiest parts of the body to draw, from the teachers of MoCCA’s popular ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP.

Hands are incredibly complex, articulated structures, containing more than twenty-seven bones and innumerable joints. No wonder they’re so hard to draw!

Learn about hands in a way that will let you adapt that knowledge to drawing hands on your characters in your own cartooning style.

This class introduces a series of anatomical principles and aesthetic concepts to help you design “hands” that fit naturally onto the body of a cartoon character and also convey believable hand functionality. We’ll also draw in class from model skeletons and live hand models.

[See bios of Sikoryak and Willberg in ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP listing above.]

HOW TO WRITE FUNNY COMICS AND GAG CARTOONS
Instructor: ARIE KAPLAN
4 Sessions, TUESDAYS October 19, 26; November 2 & 9
6:30-9:00 pm
$245 tuition | $225 for MoCCA members

Writing humor of any sort is like wrestling a tornado. Writing humor comics is no exception. Comic book writer, humorist, and author ARIE KAPLAN will teach you how to wrestle that tornado, ride bareback on the tornado, and even make the tornado do a few tricks like “roll over” and “play dead”!

Age of Heroes #1

Mayor Jameson – You’ve got to have your thumb on the pulse of the public.  All good Mayors know that.  LaGuardia.  Lindsay.  Even that clown Koch knew it.  You know their hopes.  Their fears — especially their fears — you can use it to lead.  To guide them wherever you want.

Deathlok the Demolisher

Godwulf – The revolution is here, people, and it is being televised!  Deathlok has set the example, we only have to follow!  What do you have to lose but your cheap consumer goods?  Think globally and act locally!  Throw the #### out!

Ex Machina #49

Suzanne – You once asked me why so many engineers become suicide bombers?  It’s because non of you poor fucks know hot to score.  I don’t care if you’re into guys, girls, microwaves, whatever.  But if your kind blew your load once in a while, maybe you wouldn’t always be blowing up yourselves.

and

Mayor Hundred – I’m a politician Suzanne.  I lie.

Superman: War of the Supermen #3

Conner Kent – –think the founding fathers would be very disappointed in you jerks!

X-Men: Legacy #236

Cable – Fanatics don’t sign off until the job is done.

Ex Machina #45

Mayor Hundred – Whatever, it’ll be your house in a few months anyway.

Dave – See, I don’t know about that.  Odds are I’m going to have Bob Kerrey running to the left of me, Ogniebene to my right and Bloomberg down the middle.  And most New Yorkers are still smarting from the last time they elected a black man Mayor.

and

Dave – We could be the first city in America to announce a multimillion-dollar plan to get the morning-after pill into more women’s hands, and I think we should.

Mayor Hundred – After four years of me successfully dodging that shitstorm, now you want me to use taxpayer dollars on abortion pills?

Dave – That’s RU-486.  Morning-after is just emergency contraception.  No different than us handing out condoms on the subway.

Mayor Hundred – Except it is.  I’m with you that abstinence is a fairy tale, but I think some birth control options are more… hot-button than others.

and

Dave – But… you’re pro-choice.  Aren’t you?

Mayor Hundred – That’s what certainly what everyone believes.

Dave – And what the hell do you believe?

Mayor Hundred – That public servants should try to avoid genital politics and concentrate on actually getting shit done.

Punisher #9

Microchip – He’s Dead Frank.  Deader than the G.O.P.

Batman and Superman Take on NYC Police

The New York Post brings us news that Batman and Superman decided to mix it up with some of New York City’s finest.  The scuffle started when police officers approached Superman, aka Maksim Katsnelson, and Batman, aka Frank Frisoli, to see if they had the required permits to perform in costume in public.

Neither of the individuals seemed to have the required permit, so Superman decided to take of running while screaming “I’m not getting arrested.”  After punching a female officer in the face it took seven officers to subdue the Man of Steel.  Batman was just handcuffed and let go after.

While Superman was arrested and went to a new Fortress of Solitude, aka jail, Batman walked off with another costumed character, the Statue of Liberty.

In this bizzaro world Superman was arrested while Batman got the girl.  Neither really seemed to understand their character going by this incident.
