DC New Media Fail

Bookmark and Share

When it comes to using websites and new media it seems the comic industry is woefully behind.  We’ve been critical and highlighted the numerous failures of some of the companies in their attempts to use these tools to promote their properties and comics.  Last night we had a face to palm moment as a staffer for DC comics attempted to go back and forth on Twitter with another blogger.

When attempting to respond to this tweet from @dcwomenkicknass:

The @DC_Nation tweeter posted this:

But here’s the problem, she asked about a list of bloggers that deal with DC comics, similar to the blog roll we have on our right or the list of publishers.

And that tweet linked to this:

DC BlogThat’s clearly not what she asked for.  It’s a landing page that links to the four blogs DC comics maintains.  That’s fine and dandy, except that page is actually a blog page in itself.  You can tell that by the navigation on the left.  And the header of the post.

It just shows the lack of understanding of websites in using the wrong type page for what you’re trying to accomplish.  Sure it works but so does a shoe to drive in a nail.  I’d rather use a hammer.  How about just a “content page” that makes the point of the page a little clearer?

With a content page you’d also have the ability to style it a little better, kick out the unnecessary left navigation (which adds to the embarrassment by highlighting the one post) and make the point of this page clear.

Here’s a better idea, how about using this blog to highlight important posts from the other four blogs?  Crazy concept, I know.

The whole concept of a blog roll was overlooked (we’ll be adding one soon along with a whole lot of other upgrades) and the question and comment wasn’t answered.  That’s just bad use of new media and yet another example of how DC comics misses the mark when it comes to this vital area of communication.

Elect the Legion of Super-Heroes Leader

Bookmark and Share

DC has thrown up a simple website to allow the public to chose and “elect” the next leader of the Legion of Super-Heroes.  Voting ends on November 10.  While I like the concept this is beyond a missed opportunity for DC.  Treating this like a real election, with campaign websites, videos and attack ads (don’t forget deep social media integration) would of gotten buzz for the series from outside of the comic book community and driven free word of mouth advertising you could never pay for.  Another epic online fail from DC.

If you care, you can vote online at http://www.dccomics.com/sites/legionelection/

Dark Horse Welcomes The New Events And Community Manager!

Official Press Release

DARK HORSE INTRODUCES NEW EVENTS AND COMMUNITY MANAGER, KARI YADRO

SEPTEMBER 7, MILWAUKIE, OR—Today Dark Horse announced the appointment of Kari Yadro to the newly created role of events and community manager. In the beginning, Dark Horse was built on the idea of creating an atmosphere that was friendly and accessible to both creators and fans. In 2010, Dark Horse has looked to continue this tradition with a heavy focus on the growing online social-networking channels. Looking forward to 2011, the company hopes to focus heavily on the growing comics community in Portland, Oregon, and the world at large, with more events and activities demonstrating leadership balanced with accessibility.

This new position will not only encompass all Dark Horse trade-show coordination and planning, but also any and all Dark Horse events, such as in-store appearances and signings. In addition, the Dark Horse events and community manager will focus heavily on Dark Horse’s social-networking strategy, overseeing Facebook, Twitter, and all other channels, as this has become an increasingly important area for Dark Horse.

Kari Yadro comes to Dark Horse from a storied career with Barnes & Noble, where she currently holds the position of community relations manager. In her time there, she has handled coordination of all in-store events, large and small. Kari’s passion for science fiction led her into the comic shop by way of Dark Horse’s own Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight.

“It’s an honor to be joining the comic-book industry, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, where there are so many amazing publishers,” said Kari Yadro. “I’m really excited about connecting with Dark Horse’s fans and exploring partnership opportunities with organizations in the local and world communities.”

“As Dark Horse continues to expand our presence in the minds of fans on and off of the trade-show floors, I am confident that Kari brings the perfect balance of events experience and community building to her new role,” said Dark Horse’s director of public relations, Jeremy Atkins. “I couldn’t be happier about the level of energy and enthusiasm she brings to the position.”

Kari will cut her teeth at October’s New York Comic Con. Please make sure to stop by the Dark Horse booth and say hello.
