Vampirella is sent by the Vatican to investigate the kidnapping of a little girl by Ethan Shroud and the Chaos Cult, only to become the centerpiece of a ritual invoking Lady Umbra, the sister-bride of Chaos, that leaves her marked as a living sacrifice to the dark goddess who rules the shadows. Hunted by the Mallus Maleficarum, an elite hit-squad of monster-killers also known as “The Witch-Hammer”, she finds her world abruptly turned upside down… and herself unexpectedly allied with the strangest bedfellow imaginable!

Review: Altered States Vampirella #1

AlteredVampi-Cov-A-TanSome might question the logic of this new direction for Dynamite characters which focus on retelling their stories in an alternate reality setting.  It first started with Legenderry in 2013, as a steampunk re-imagining of Dynamite’s most notable characters, and it continued recently with the launch of individual Legenderry titles as well as with the new alternate reality series Altered States.  Designed as a sequence of one-shots, Altered States takes the normal Dynamite characters and puts them in a different setting and with different backgrounds.

In this story, Vampirella is reimagined as a space explorer by the name of Ella.  On a somewhat routine journey to Venus in the not so distance future, her ship along with its crew is thrown into another corner of the universe, where she is left to fend for herself on an alien planet.  The planet is populated with people that look a little like they might belong on Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Barsoom, but so too is it populated with another group of people, somewhat vampiric in appearance that Ella must help to battle.  In the progress of the story there are enough ties to her own story to make fans realize that it is in fact Vampirella, but also enough of the new twists to impress.

Although the concept risks being too much of a parody of itself, it still works with the fresh approach to the story.  One of the better examples is the use of the name Ella, as she does become Vampirella in a sense, just perhaps not in the way that the readers might have expected.  More so, the success of this series is the injection of new inspirations into an old character.  Those inspirations themselves might be borrowed from other genres as well, but the formula works well here, and despite being a one-shot, this will likely leave fans wanting more.

The Women Take Over for Swords of Sorrow

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the May 2015 launch of Swords of Sorrow, the genre-spanning crossover event featuring an all-star line-up of female authors, headlined by Gail Simone.  Debuting with a core Swords of Sorrow series by Simone, the crossover continues throughout May with tie-in titles including the Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood miniseries written by Nancy A. Collins; the Swords of Sorrow: Chaos special by Mairghread Scott; and the Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade / Kato special by G. Willow Wilson and Erica Schultz. Subsequent months will debut related projects by additional female authors, including Leah Moore, Marguerite Bennett, Emma Beeby, and Mikki Kendall. The crossover event brings together Dynamite’s wide roster of female characters, including the iconic Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris (of the popular Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Warlord of Mars franchise), and Vampirella.

Simone’s core Swords of Sorrow story serves as the starting point for a new universe of pulp adventure. Illustrated by Sergio Davila, the series features the supernatural heroine Vampirella, Martian princess Dejah Thoris, crimson-tressed swordswoman Red Sonja, martial artist Kato (from filmmaker Kevin Smith’s reboot of The Green Hornet), primal warrior Jungle Girl, and many more. Drawn from a dozen worlds and eras to face off against a legendary evil that threatens their homelands, Dynamite’s fiercest females must overcome their differences to harness the power of mystical blades — the eponymous Swords of Sorrow — in final conflict.

Swords of Sorrow #1 features a variety of cover editions, including a Main cover by industry superstar J. Scott Campbell; variants by Jenny Frison, Emanuela Lupacchino; a subscription edition by Robert Hack available to fans placing preorders with their local retailers; and incentive editions by Joyce Chin, Tula Lotay, Nei Ruffino, Cedric Poulat.  Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood #1 and the Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade / Kato special both feature covers by Billy Tan, while the Swords of Sorrow: Chaos special spotlights Joyce Chin.

Review: Vampirella Faery Tales #5

VampiFeary05-Cov-A-AnacletoWith the horror genre of comics definitely making a resurgence in recent years, it is no surprise to see Vampirella be brought back in to fashion. I can tell you it’s probably been almost 20 years since the last time I picked up one of her books and this certainly did not disappoint.

This is the last installment in the five part series, where Vampirella finds herself inside the storybook, like Alice through the looking glass, and must find a way out. What she discovers inside though, in these last few chapeters, neither her, nor the reader, would have suspected.

The comic reads like something out of Tale From the Crypt with the narrator interacting directly with Vampirella and making groan-inducingly painful, but at the same time terribly delicious, puns. Even much the art work is reminiscent of the old Creepshow and Tales From the Vault comics from the ’60’s and 70’s. It is a dose of nostalgia in the modern age, and successfully pays homage to it’s predecessors.
There are noticeable shifts when each of the artists takes the reins for their respective stories, but not so much as to be a distraction or to interrupt the flow.

The writing is what you would expect, a combination between Poe and the alliterative nature of comics from a bygone age, harking back even to old radio dramas where the story, by necessity, needed to be fleshed out in such a verbal cornucopia as to engage and enthrall the listeners.

The comic never loses site of itself, knowing full well it is simply campy, pulpy fun at it’s best.

Final Issue! Vampirella is shocked when she meets the pun-happy Storyteller face-to-face, only to end up hip-deep in alligators in Steve Niles’ swamp-monster retelling of “The Frog Prince”. Then, in Nancy A. Collins’ twisted take on “Sleeping Beauty”, a major character from the original Warren run is reintroduced when Vampirella finally discovers the true identity of her mysterious doppelganger and learns about her hidden connection to the enchanted book she is trapped inside in a weird and wicked resolution that ties in with the on-going monthly title—provided Vampi can escape a castle full of walking dead that have awoken from their centuries-long slumber with a royal appetite…

But before she can decide whether to come out of ‘retirement’ one last time, the school’s compound is attacked by The Eaters of the Dead—a legion of flesh-eating undead created by Sutekh from those who have dared to defy him. Now Red Sonja, her longtime companion, Yusuf, and her young pupils must battle not only hell-beasts and ghouls, but the terrifying Son of Set himself in a bloody fight for not only their lives, but their souls as well.
