Review: Amazing Spider-Man #14

Amazing Spider-Man #14

It’s been a bit since I’ve read Amazing Spider-Man, but with “Dark Web” approaching, I thought it might be a good time to swing on board. “Dark Web” is the upcoming crossover event between the X-Men and Spider-Man (and a few others) that has them taking on the Goblin Queen and Chasm. Amazing Spider-Man #14 begins to get things rolling in an issue that focuses on Chasm and his motivation behind what’s to come.

Written by Zeb Wells, Amazing Spider-Man #14 is a series of short stories by different teams of artists telling the story of Ben Reilly, aka Chasm. When we last saw him, Ben was vowing revenge against the Beyond Corporation and Peter Parker wanting his memories and life back. In his plot, Ben has found a perfect partner in Madelyne Pryor who is also a clone and having some issues with that. Granted dominion over Limbo she was looking to forgive and forget, but Ben has other plans. The two together making an interesting duo, as both have gone through similar situations a connection I hadn’t really made until this issue. Wells does a good job of giving us motivation and the anger that Chasm feels. But, while the issue does a decent job of catching up readers, there’s still a little bit of backstory missing for those coming into this new. There’s a lot to pack in though and the issue does an admirable job of fitting in so much. You get the basic overview, not the small details, enough to catch up and know what’s going on.

Where I think the issue falls a little short is the use of so many artists to tell the story. While the arc of it all works and makes sense, the art styles themselves vary so much. None of the art is bad at all, it’s good, but the styles are so different it’s jarring. Why this route was taken isn’t clear but it’s something that stands out to me in a negative way. There’s also some styles that work better than others as well, making the difference stand out a bit more.

Amazing Spider-Man #14 is an interesting issue. It feels like something that might normally be a “zero” issue or one-shot leading into an event. “Dark Web” kicking off in a regular issue that doesn’t feature Spider-Man or anyone else other than the villains is interesting in a lot of ways. Overall, it’s a nice issue that delivers motivation but doesn’t quite have that punch that really excites. Still, it’s more than enough to keep me interested in the event to come.

SDCC 2022: Marvel teases what’s coming soon and celebrating 60 Years of Spider-Man

Marvel celebrated 60 years of Spider-Man with a panel that not only celebrated the past but teased what’s coming later this year. Not only will we see lots of new Spider characters from across the multiverse but Peter Parker will have to deal with Chasm and the Goblin Queen in “Dark Web” which will have the webslinger crossover with the X-Men! In Edge of Spider-Verse #1 , a new prehistoric Spider-Rex will debut in Edge of Spider-Verse #1 on August 3rd in Marvel Comics. And if you have already fallen in love with Spider-Rex, get excited!

Devilish details about Dark Web have emerged during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con! Teased in various panels throughout the weekend, Dark Web will be a Spider-Man/X-Men crossover story spearheaded by current Amazing Spider-Man scribe Zeb Wells. The saga will begin in prelude issues throughout November, followed by December’s Dark Web Alpha #1 where Wells will be joined by superstar artist Adam Kubert. From there, the web will be spun across issues of Amazing Spider-Man as well as various tie-in one-shots and limited series.

Dark Web will find Spider-Man and the X-Men joining forces against two iconic characters that have experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years—Ben Reilly and Madelyne Pryor. As seen in this year’s Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom, the two wronged clones are teaming up as Chasm and Goblin Queen to raise hell across the Marvel Universe. The story will fan the embers of the iconic Inferno crossover and pack an emotional punch that pays off decades of Marvel Comics storytelling.

Featuring artwork by Michael Dowling and Kyle Hotz, November’s Amazing Spider-Man #14 will be a special Dark Web prelude issue that reintroduces CHASM, Ben Reilly’s dangerous new persona. Not seen since Amazing Spider-Man #894 and Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom, fans will see exactly what Chasm and the Goblin Queen have been busy with. The issue will also introduce a brand-new villain shrouded in mystery—HALLOWS’ EVE. Set to plan a pivotal role in the event, fans can get their first glimpse at Hallows’ Eve and her killer design in a new variant cover by Ed McGuinness. The superstar artist recently graced the pages of Amazing Spider-Man for this week’s 900th issue and will return to the title for the upcoming DARK WEB tie-in issues.

Writer Christopher Cantwell and artist Lan Medina will launch a new tie-in limited series during Dark Web titled GOLD GOBLIN that sets up a new status quo for Norman Osborn. Norman Osborn’s sins may have been cleansed, but his memories weren’t and he’s done plenty of horrific things to remember. Norman’s worked hard to avoid all things “Goblin” and to stay on the straight and narrow. Consequences in Amazing Spider-Man pushed him to try super-heroing, and he liked it. But when the media dub him the Gold Goblin, he has to start wondering – can he ever get away from the Goblin inside?

Review: Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #2

Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #2

Life leads you some unexpected paths. We all have a plan of how things are supposed to go. There are the things we can control, and we do everything we could do to ensure our desired outcome. Then there are those things out of our hands.

That job you want , that person you have feelings for , that reward you felt was yours, things that you have no power over and can frustrate you to no end. Sometimes, this is when we surprise ourselves. It may lead us to places and people we never knew we needed. In Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #2 we find Jane , looking to Doctor Voodoo for answers.

We find Thor in a dark place, as he is being hunted by a giant snake, fearing these may be his last moments, he flashes to the time Freya thought him about death, and remembering the one he truly loved, Jane. We are also taken to Asgard, where Sif is fighting alongside the Valkyries as the Dark Elves try to take the kingdom. We also find  Jane in New Orleans looking to Doctor Voodoo for help in finding Thor,an ask, not easily granted.. By issue’s end, Jane is headed to the Splinter Realsm to find Thor and Echantress has breached Asgard’s walls to obtain the keys ot Hel.

Overall, Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #2 is a momentous second issue that never pumps the brakes. The story by Gronbekk is mesmerizing. The art by creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, it’s a story that leaves readers breathless.
