Review: Justice League: No Justice #1

Justice League: No Justice #1 is the kick off to the four-issue miniseries spinning out of Dark Nights: Metal. After Brainiac systematically takes down all of Earth’s super-teams, the last thing the League expects is for him to ask for their help! Without their aid, his home planet and the universe are both doomed!

Dark Nights: Metal opened up a world(s) of possibility of the DC Universe not only introducing the “Dark Universe” but also cracking the Source Wall allowing even greater concepts to leak in to the DCU. It’s a shake up the DC Universe as it has mainly been known for its multiverse but now can also explore the unknowns beyond the Source Wall. Our first introduction to what awaits is four beings comprised of the universe’s major energies – Mystery, Wonder, Wisdom, and Entropy. They sustain their life force by devouring planets. Yes, this is Marvel’s Galactus meets Marvel’s Celestials and a further embrace of the concepts begun by the legendary Jack Kirby. And the issue feels very “Marvel” in that way, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We’ve seen from Dark Nights that DC can bridge multiple things (in that case the New 52 and Rebirth) and in this case the overall package is Marvel’s Kirby meets DC’s Kirby for something new.

Written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Joshua Williamson the issue’s strength is the characters themselves and the pairings we’ll be seeing throughout the series. The heroes are forced to work with the villains and already there’s some moments that are entertaining and solid. A scene with Lex Luthor and Martian Manhunter particularly stands out as to what I hope to see more of as well as Starro being Starro. That aspect is all solid.

Where the issue overall lags is that much of it is write by numbers and a bit predictable. There’s the expected fights and then team ups, battle that didn’t need to happen, and just general clashes. Where the comic shines is the small details of interactions and where it deviates from expectations (and even then it’s a few particular details as opposed to the overall act. Brainiac’s fate is the example of that).

Artist Francis Manapul, with color by Hi-Fi, and lettering by AndWorld Design, create a visual treat. The art brings Manapul’s strengths and gives it all a cosmic twist. There’s some interesting designs and the flow of the comic is great, especially since so much is packed in. Each character looks solid, the page layouts are interesting, the comic is more visually engaging than it is storywise. The colors pop in a way using a day-glow like palette of purples, pinks, blues, and greens. Colorwise the comic is very unique. The lettering too helps add some emotional punch and at times helps deliver the punchline itself.

The comic isn’t bad in any way and very much reminds me of a summer popcorn blockbuster. There’s great concepts that just need a little something more to make them stand out as unique instead of riffs of something we’ve seen before. It’s the interaction of characters as well as the fantastic art that’s the driver here. The fact we know we’ll be getting new Justice League books and teams (and who is on what team) that also diminishes some of the storytelling. It feels like it has a job of getting us to the next chapter instead of getting us excited about the next chapter. Justice League: No Justice so far feels like the bridge from Dark Nights: Metal to a new era of the Justice League. Like the Source Wall itself, leaving what lies beyond to the imagination is some times the fun part.

DARK NIGHTS: METAL left the DCU transformed in ways both terrifying and wondrous-and only the Justice League is strong enough to face the threats to come…or are they? Four giant beings comprised of the universe’s major energies-Mystery, Wonder, Wisdom and Entropy-who sustain their life force by devouring planets are on their way to destroy the planet of Colu. The only way to take down this unimaginable threat is for the superhero teams of Earth to forget everything they thought they knew and form new alliances.
What secrets of the cosmos will Superman, Martian Manhunter and Team Mystery discover? Will Zatanna, Wonder Woman and Team Wonder awaken alien magic they cannot put back to sleep? What can Harley Quinn possibly have to teach the rest of Team Wisdom? And most importantly…why the heck is Beast Boy on Team Entropy with Lobo and Batman? Find out all this and much more in the most exciting, bombastic event of summer 2018!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Joe

Top Pick: Venom #1 (Marvel) – Cates and Stegman on Venom! Yes! I am so excited for this book. The last run of Venom had its moments, but this looks like classic scary Venom mixed with the sometimes good guy inside. Can’t wait!

Barrier #1 (Image Comics/Panel Syndicate) – The team behind Private Eye, Vaughn and Martin reunite for a new title. Hell yes. This is a reprint of their web series they released before about illegal immigration and much more. It sounds awesome.

Runaways #9 (Marvel) – This is consistently one of my favorite reads every week and I’m glad to physically pull this book. If you’re a fan of the two old comic runs of this series or coming from the Hulu series there’s something to love.

Despicable Deadpool #300 (Marvel) – What a run it has been, Duggan! This is a super-sized issue to celebrate the merc with the mouth and Duggan’s farewell issue. I expect a lot of ridiculous humor and wtf moments.

Justice League: No Justice #1 (DC Comics) – I’m excited to see what they do with this new crazy multiple team approach to Justice League and how the series moves forward. The Justice League brand needs improvement and a way to get back to its glory days, so here’s hoping this is where it starts.

Alex

Old Man Logan #39 (Marvel) – I get the sense that with Wolverine returning to the Marvel universe that Old Man Logan’s time on this world is coming to a close – especially with his healing factor on the fritz. Watching the slow decline of an alternate version of one of my favorite characters is oddly enthralling.

Warhammer 40K: Deathwatch #1 (Titan) – I have no reason to want to read this beyond the cover, but sometimes that’s all that it take to pull you into a previously unfamiliar world…

Brett

Top Pick: Nuclear Winter Vol. 1 (BOOM! Studios) – I’ve read this cute graphic novel and it’s awesome. Basically a nuclear power plant blew and things are irradiated. So, how do you live under a nuclear winter? Find out in what I’m hoping will be many more volumes to come.

Barrier #2 (Image Comics/Panel Syndicate) – Joe picked the first issue and I’m going with the second. You should get both of these!! The series is amazing and an absolute must read.

Oblivion Song #3 (Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment) – The first two issue have been fantastic so far and the detail and use of real world situations have been brilliant.

Southern Bastards #20 (Image Comics) – A gut punch of an issue that had me tense throughout as I turned each page.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Through the Mirror #2 (IDW Publishing) – The Mirror Universe comes over to the main one in this weekly series. The first issue was great and them mystery deepens. It’s a little slow but fantastic Star Trek for those that love the Mirror Universe.

DC Reveals Two New Justice League Series with a Team Including Darkseid?!

At WonderCon, DC Comics revealed some of what we can expect in coming months including details on the three new Justice League comic series being released later this year.

Writer Scott Snyder dished the latest on the Justice League: No Justice four issue miniseries he’s working on with co-writers James Tynion IV and Joshua Williamson and artist Francis Manapul, as well as his plans for Justice League, with newly-acquired artist Jim Cheung and rising star Jorge Jimenez.

But jaws really dropped when he announced that not one, but two all-new Justice League titles will debut from the May miniseries, each featuring new team rosters: Justice League Dark, written by Tynion with art by Alvaro Martinez, Raul Fernandez (inker) and Brad Anderson (colors) and Justice League Odyssey, written by Williamson, with art by Stjepan Sejic. Both titles are scheduled to launch in June.

Synder revealed that No Justice sets up a new mission and direction for the group which he calls “New Justice.” In his run on the series, the organization will face the Legion of Doom and operate out of the Hall of Justice moving away from the orbiting Watchtower satellite.

Justice League Dark is a relaunch of the series which began with DC’s New 52 and again has a magic focus. The team includes Zatanna, John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Man-Bat, Detective Chimp and be led by Wonder Woman.

Odyssey is the fascinating one which Snyder called a “crazy space western.” That series features Green Lantern Jessica Cruz, Starfire, Azrael, Cyborg… and Darkseid! Snyder called the character the team’s  “Hannibal Lecter” and the series will deal with an epic plot involving Darkseid’s father, the Source Wall. The team will travel around in an old Brainiac head.

Snyder wasn’t finished there; he hinted that the conclusion of Dark Nights: Metal #6 would have repercussions throughout the DC Universe, and he wasn’t kidding when he announced that Adam Glass, writer for popular TV shows Supernatural and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders would be joining fan-favorite artist Bernard Chang as the new talent team for Teen Titans, beginning with issue #20 in June. In addition to Damian Wayne (Robin) leading Kid Flash and Red Arrow into new adventures, several completely new characters will be added to the roster, including the daughter of the Main Man and everyone’s favorite(?) Czarnian, Lobo!

Batman: Lost Teased “No Justice” in November 2017

This past Friday, DC Comics announced “No Justice” a weekly event series bringing together heroes and villains and shaking up the Justice League. The storyline will be a follow up to Dark Nights, the current event shaking up some of the DC Universe.

But, it seems that DC announced “No Justice” back in November in the Dark NightsBatman: Lost one-shot.

You can see the title on this book on a shelf in a scene involving an elderly Bruce Wayne reading a story about his adventures.

What else is mentioned?

  • The Long Halloween
  • The Case of the Chemical Syndicate
  • The Court of Owls
  • A Lonely Place of Dying
  • Knightfall
  • Hush
  • Dark Victory
  • Public Enemies
  • Daughter of the Demon
  • Under the Red Hood
  • The Black Mirror

All of the above are either comic storylines or animated films.

Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, and Francis Manapul Team Up in May for Justice League: No Justice

After the conclusion of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo’s Dark Nights: Metal, the bestselling Batman talent team will shake the DC Universe to its deepest foundations and do something that even the most passionate fans will characterize as unimaginable and utterly audacious.

This event sets the stage for even more bold and daring storytelling, as Snyder, along with co-writers James Tynion IV and Joshua Williamson plus all-star artist Francis Manapul take readers on an adventure that will break the very boundaries of the DC Universe in Justice League: No Justice, a four-issue weekly miniseries, beginning May 9.

In the announcement Snyder said:

We thought we knew the entire map of the DC cosmos. We thought we had explored all there was to explore. But now we know that all this time the Multiverse was nothing but a fishbowl, and now we’ve been dumped into the ocean, unleashing terrifying new threats, and wondrous new possibilities. Metal opened up channels of storytelling that Francis, James, Joshua and I are excited to explore in a big way. When we’re finished, fans will never look at the Justice League in the same way again.

In this four-issue miniseries, the super-villain Brainiac arrives on Earth with a dire warning for the Justice League: there’s a threat coming to destroy Earth, one that the heroes are ill-equipped to handle. Brainiac thinks he holds the key to victory, but it means combining members of the League with some of the most dangerous villains in the DC Universe and sending them into battle against this extinction-level menace. The stakes are at their absolute highest; if one of these teams fail. It’s game over.

Justice League: No Justice promises to deliver over-the-top blockbuster action, courtesy of artist Francis Manapul.

Manapul added in the release:

I’m laying out the biggest action of my life. The Justice League realizes that they need to expand their reach to become something bigger than they have ever been before. If you thought my work for Justice League: Darkseid War was huge, I’m taking the League to the edge of the cosmos with No Justice. Anyone who has asked for Harley Quinn, Martian Manhunter, Starfire, Zatanna, the Atom, Raven, or Doctor Fate to be in their personal Justice League will stand up and cheer.

This can’t-miss miniseries sets the stage for a “family” of Justice League titles, beginning in June, headlined by Snyder on Justice League with additional titles written by James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson and more in the coming months.

The miniseries will see teams made up of heroes and villains.

The heroes and villains will be broken up into various teams. Based on images names:

Team Mystery: Starro, Starfire, Superman, Martian Manhunter, Sinestro <- a cosmic group

Team Entropy: Beast Boy, Lobo, Batman, Lex Luthor, Deathstroke <- a brawler group

Team Wonder: Raven, Dr. Fate, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Etrigan <- a magic based group

Team Wisdom: The Atom, Harley Quinn, The Flash, Robin, Cyborg <- a science based group
