Black (Comic) History Month: Black Panther, a Comic Character You Should Know

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #513 COVER VARIANTContinuing our Black History Month comics coverage comes the first character spotlight. I thought through who should be first, and decide on one of the first, and one that’ll become more in the spotlight as the Marvel Cinematic Universe heads towards his solo film, T’Challa, aka The Black Panther.

The Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby appearing for the first time in Fantastic Four #52 in 1966. He’s considered the first black superhero in mainstream American comics.

The character’s role has changed over the years but generally the Black Panther has been the leader of the African nation of Wakanda with the title being passed down between leaders. The nation is technologically advanced and rich, partially due to its abundance of the metal resource Vibranium (the same material Captain America’s shield is made from). This has also led to the nation having one of the greatest armies on Earth.

That role hasn’t always been the case, and he’s given up his leadership role of the nation, and instead has become the leader of the dead instead (it’s a weird story). One of my favorite story arcs saw the character move to Hells Kitchen, watching over it for Daredevil and forcing the character to use his intelligence and physical abilities instead of his wealth. It added a bit of a street level feel to the character. He was also married to the X-Men member Storm for a bit, and their relationship is a bit strained right now as they’ve separated.

The character has been both a hero and villain, it’s all perspectives, but most recently he’s been a part of the Illuminati, a secret cabal of some of the world’s greatest heroes who have worked in secret to protect Earth and the multiverse.

Actor Chadwick Boseman will be play the character in several films as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and rumors has his first appearance coming this summer in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Expect to hear much more about the Black Panther in entertainment over the coming months and years.

Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth Gets an Artist’s Edition!

Kamandi The Last BoyOf all Jack Kirby’s celebrated DC Comics creations, perhaps none has struck such an enduring chord with readers as his post-apocalyptic adventure Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth. Now, to the delight of fans far and wide, this much-anticipated series joins the esteemed ranks of Jack “King” Kirby’s Artist’s Editions!

Long after the age of super heroes, Kamandi triumphed as humanity’s last beacon in a world ruled by beasts. Traveling the remnants of civilization after a great disaster, the Last Boy on Earth found both friends and foes among the irradiated animal kingdom that now inhabited the world. Written and drawn by Kirby, the series was unique to comics and completely unlike anything else readers had seen.

This enthralling Artist’s Edition features some of the most influential complete issues from the revered series, including issues 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 9, along with additional covers and other bonus material. At 160 pages and measuring 12” by 17,” this Artist’s Edition will amaze and delight fans this May!

The Spotlight Shines on Jack Kirby’s Mister Miracle

Jack Kirby’s Mister MiracleLegendary creator Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, his revered multi-generational space opera, debuted in the award-winning Artist’s Edition format earlier this year with Jack Kirby New Gods: Artist’s Edition. IDW Publishing is now proud to announce a second title in this monumental series, Jack Kirby: Mister Miracle Artist’s Edition! Meticulously scanned from the original art, this Artist’s Edition presents the highest quality look inside an astonishing work by a comic legend. The Fourth World introduced a whole new pantheon into the DC Comics universe, igniting a fervor that continues to define storytelling in comics.

Inspired by the antics of fellow creator Jim Steranko, who spent some of his early years working as an escape artist and illusionist, Kirby created Mister Miracle in 1971 when he debuted in his own title, one of the four core books of the Fourth World epic. And while the original run lasted a mere 18 issues, the character has reappeared numerous times over the years, and the magic of those first Kirby stories continues to reverberate among creators and fans to this day.

IDW’s Special Projects Director Scott Dunbier has assembled a staggering seven complete issues of the series by Kirby, including issues #2, #3, and #5-9! With 192 pages measuring 12” x 17”, this is truly a book to behold!

Kirby’s unrivaled vision can’t be missed in this unrivaled Artist’s Edition!
