What Has Been The Top Grossing iPad App For Six Wednesdays Running?:

Comics by comiXology

Same Day As Print Releases Turns “New Comic Wednesday” into an iPad Event!

“This isn’t just a huge milestone for comiXology, but a huge milestone for comics as a medium.”

– David Steinberger, co-founder & CEO of comiXology

October 27th, 2011New York, NY – Yesterday marked the sixth Wednesday in a row that the Comics by comiXology appcharted as the top grossing iPad app in Apple’s entire App Store — beating out Apple’s own Pages and Keynote applications. Long known as “new comic book day” to print comic fans across the nation, Wednesday has now become an online comic book event thanks to more and more publishers going digital same day as print with new releases available on the Comics by comiXology iPad app.

Created by comiXology, the leading distributor of digital comics, the Comics by comiXology app on iPad is just one part of the Comics by comiXology ecology — also available on the iPhone, Android, and the Web — offering more than 14,000 comic books from top-selling publishers.

“When have comic books, not comic book movies, not comic book merchandise, but the actual comic books been #1 in anything, much less high tech?” asked comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger. “Being the number one grossing iPad application six Wednesdays in a row isn’t just a huge milestone for comiXology, but a huge milestone for comics as a medium…and we could not be prouder.”

Through a quirk of history and economics, comic books for the last thirty some odd years have been a destination item, sought out by a hard-core fan following and serviced by a dedicated group of independent retail brick and mortar stores. And while this network of stores rescued the comic book industry from near oblivion as newsstands disappeared in the 1970s, the unfortunate byproduct was that if you didn’t live near a comic shop or actually go to a comic shop, you would most likely be denied the experience and enjoyment of comic books — one of the great American art forms.

But this has all changed with the debut of Comics by comiXology.

“Our main goal since day one was to expand the audience for comic books. The medium has long been the inspiration for movies and imagery from comic books can be seen on everything from t-shirts to toothbrushes — but most people have not experienced the actual source material,” said comiXology co-founder and CTO John Roberts. “ComiXology was created to correct that wrong. David and I saw the opportunity to use digital distribution as a way to “unleash” this great medium on a largely unsuspecting public — and being ranked #1 for the last six weeks shows that we have met that goal.”

Comics by comiXology rose up the top grossing iPad apps chart beginning early September with the 3.0 release of the Comics by comiXology app. This was immediately followed by the launch of DC Comics – The New 52, where leading comic book publisher DC Entertainment released 52 all-new number one issues that became top sellers in both print and digital. Other major publishers have quickly followed suit, committing to a same day as print release schedule.

ComiXology most recently announced the addition of IDW Publishing, one of the top independent comic book publishers in North America, to their platform.

And while September has seen record sales of comics through the iPad, September has also seen record print sales — bucking the conventional wisdom that “print is dead” and showing that print and digital can both grow the comic book reading market standing side-by-side.

“It’s great to take a moment and reflect that one of our big goals of being a leader in the comic book industry has been met,” David Steinberger reflected. “But that doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. All I can say is…you ain’t seen nothing yet!”

About comiXology
Since 2007 comiXology has been developing the technological infrastructure to bring comics into the digital mainstream and expose new audiences to the rich history and culture of the industry. Through partnerships with top comic book publishers including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, IDW Publishing, Archaia Entertainment, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite Entertainment and Image Comics as well as their own mobile and web apps which host over 14,000 digital titles, comiXology has become a leader in digital comic book proliferation. Also focused on creating strong ties with retail stores through its technology solutions, comiXology continues to transform the previously fragmented comic ecosystem into a vibrant and cohesive marketplace.

IDW Graphic Novels Debut on Apple iBooks

IDW Graphic Novels Debut on Apple iBooks

First major comics publisher to offer iBook graphic novels and comics for the iPad™, iPhone®, and iPod touch®

[iBook Shelf]San Diego, CA (September 7, 2011)—Continuing to lead the charge of digital comics, IDW Publishing, a leader in digital comics, proudly debuted today the first large collection of comic and graphic novel titles ever available within Apple’s iBooks store. As the first major comics publisher to offer significant content, IDW’s initial iBooks entrée features nearly twenty complete graphic novels, including award-winning books and works by best selling prose authors.

This one-of-a-kind launch kicks off with CODE WORD: GERONIMO, which is launched simultaneously in iBooks and in print. An original graphic novel detailing the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound by SEAL Team 6, CODE WORD: GERONIMO is expertly written by military insider Captain Dale Dye (USMC, Ret.) and Dr. Julia Dye, Ph.D., and offers the amazing, moment-by-moment inside story of the clandestine raid that rid the world of this terrorist mastermind.

“IDW’s graphic novel line is a perfect fit for iBooks,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s director of ePublishing. “While our various comic storefront apps, such as IDW Comics, TRANSFORMERS Comics or Doctor Who Comics, are extremely popular with experienced comics readers and fans of those brands, having this significant presence in iBooks will help readers discover creators and titles, much the same as browsing in major book retail chains.”
[CodeWord: Geronimo]
IDW’s rich catalog of top prose authors and comics creators is especially suited for iBooks. Fans of IDW writers such as Joe Hill, Anne Rice, Max Brooks, Peter S. Beagle, or James Patterson can now find IDW graphic novels right next to their respective prose releases. Award-winning creators like Darwyn Cooke and his acclaimed  adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker books and the first installment of the BLOOM COUNTY: THE COMPLETE LIBRARY are also included in IDW’s diverse iBooks line.

The IDW launch has something for all ages, from classics like Eric Shanower’s OZ series for younger audiences, and Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s best-selling LOCKE & KEY series for mature readers.

“Our internal technology team, led by Lorelei Bunjes, has put a huge effort into developing a great reading experience for iBooks,” Webber continued. “We’re very proud of the team’s efforts to create a quality experience.”

The initial lineup includes the following titles:
[Witch & Wizard]•    Code Word: Geronimo
•    Bloom County: The Complete Digital Library 1980-1981

The popular iPhone comic app turns “talkies” while fans get a chance to add their own sound effects!

Official Press Release

The popular iPhone comic app turns “talkies” while fans get a chance to add their own sound effects!

Dallas, TX – September 1st, 2011 – Clown Commandos was the first iPhone comic book app to offer real sound effects. Just tap the comic book sound effect and hear every BAM! SPLAT! and BOOM! Now, fans of the innovative series get to SOUND OFF by submitting their own sounds with the official Clown Commandos Sound Effect Contest!

http://clowncommandos.com/sfxcontest

The contest kicks off a couple of drastic changes to the ongoing series:

The first big change begins with Issue #6 (released today). Clown Commandos brings back “talkies”! Just as the silent film era evolved, so does this digital comic series by making all the dialogue live. Now readers can hear their favorite characters deliver the lines!

“We had some recorded dialogue before,” says co-creator Scott McFadden. “But they were sprinkled throughout the issues, more like Easter Eggs. But we had so much fun making them that we decided to record dialogue for the entire series.”

“But what about past issues?” you may ask.

Well, that brings us to the second big upgrade for the series. Over the next few months, past issues will be updated! They will each have their own dialogue added… and more!

“We’re totally going to ‘George Lucas’ the earlier issues,” says co-creator Michael Anthony Steele. “And by that, we mean that we’re going to update them with what we know now: adding more sounds, different transitions, more storytelling tricks… everything we’ve learned along the way. All the elements that make our comic book app unique.”

All of the upgrades will be… free! If you’ve already purchased a particular issue, you can update that issue at no additional cost. You’ll be alerted as to the issue’s updatable status in the app’s main menu.

You can also stay in the loop with all Clown Commandos updates and news via the official blog: http://clownblog.com

To the uninitiated, Clown Commandos is a unique, funny, and surprisingly deep new comic series. It covers a squad of heroes from an alternate universe where clowns actually evolved into elite soldiers. Now these heroes must survive in our reality where clowns are known as bumbling buffoons. A reality where the rubber nose is NOT a badge of honor.

Part G.I. Joe, part Ninja Turtles, and part Batman, these juxtaposed heroes fight crime while searching for a way home. But watch out–they take themselves very seriously while doing it. To them, there’s nothing funny about being a clown. And therein lies the heart of the series’ humor. No matter what kind of life or death struggle, no matter how evil the villain, Clown Commandos think nothing of taking down the bad guys with a well-aimed rubber chicken or a pie to the face.

The innovative comic book app was one of the first to include interactive sound effects, story-driven transitions, and a series written specifically for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

If you’re ready to fight crime, thwart evildoers, and generally save the day (all while wearing red floppy boots), then enlist now and download the app in the Apple iTunes store here: http://tiny.cc/so46q

Demonstrating the breadth of IDW’s overall digital strategy, more than three million IDW digital comics have been distributed across all platforms worldwide.

IDW Publishing was one of the first major comics publishers to step into digital distribution. iHip Marvel Headphones – Tinny as Iron Man

Bookmark and Share

Marvel Captain America HeadphonesI went on a bit of a kick picking up some headphones this weekend with Marvel branding from iHip.  The headphones look pretty cool and there’s two types, one with Captain America and the other with Iron Man.  For $10, I said why not, I can show off my geek cred as I listen to music and read comics on my iPad.  And the packaging sucked me in with a great cover to a Captain America comic.  Boy, what a waste of $10.

These headphones have to be some of the worst I’ve ever listened to music with.  It was as if the music was being piped through a tin can.  It was distant, missing the surround sound excellence I expect from an Apple product.  The packaging says “noise isolating,” I just didn’t think it was the music I was trying to listen to.  It also says “engineered for quality listening,” this is clearly a lie.  “Engineered for a lacking musical experience” is more like it.

Marvel should be embarrassed they’ve put their name and brand on such a piece of shit product.  I’m angry at myself for dropping $10 on it and being sucked in by cool packaging.

Do yourself a favor and avoid these at all cost.Marvel Captain America Headphones BackMarvel Captain America Headphones Back Close UpMarvel Captain America Headphones Front Close Up

IDW Publishing releases custom Infestation Comics app for iOS
Massive crossover event infests TRANSFORMERS, Star Trek,
G.I. JOE and Ghostbusters with zombies

[INFESTATION Comics Image]San Diego, CA (March 14, 2011) – IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the release of INFESTATION comics to Apple iOS users. Available as both a stand-alone app and within the IDW Comics storefront, readers can now enjoy the entire INFESTATION crossover event on their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

INFESTATION is the hit comic series that infects the TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE, Ghostbusters, and Star Trek universes with legions of undead. This dimension-spanning storyline begins with a specially priced 40-page story by writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (The Thanos Imperative), and artist David Messina (True Blood). Something goes horribly awry in IDW’s Zombies vs Robots universe, threatening to tear some of pop culture’s biggest realities asunder. This unparalleled, never-before-seen event is now available digitally through the Apple App Store. The INFESTATION Comics app is made for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Readers can view full size pages, or read panel-by-panel simply by turning the iPhone or iPod touch horizontally.

“We’re excited to bring out INFESTATION as a stand-alone comics app,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s director of ePublishing. “While all of the issues are also available in our IDW Comics app for our regular readers, creating a stand-alone INFESTATION Comics app allows us to introduce the whole event to fans of the individual brands. This way, casual readers of TRANSFORMERS, Star Trek, G.I. JOE and Ghostbusters digital comics can see what this big comics cross-over event is all about!”

IDW’s INFESTATION app includes free digital-only versions of the preview edition, an issue checklist, a cover gallery and character designs. Readers will also be able to get the 40-page kick-off story, INFESTATION #1, for only $0.99. In addition, new issues of the series will be added over the course of March and April, culminating in the grande finale and a special TOP SECRET digital-only cross over.

“This will be one huge surprise for comic fans everywhere,” added Webber. “All we can say right now is, bring a life vest!”
