Topps Unveils John McCrea’s Mars Attacks Trading Cards

TOPPS Unveils John McCrea’s MARS ATTACKS Trading Cards

Eisner Award-Winner to Illustrate Exclusive Subset & Hand-Drawn Sketch Cards

April 20 – The Topps Company today has released a first look at a special subset of all-new trading cards by acclaimed comic book artist John McCrea, to be included in this summer’s Mars Attacks Heritage card set.

McCrea, the Eisner Award-winning illustrator and co-creator of DC Comics’ Hitman (with Garth Ennis), is the artist on IDW’s Mars Attacks comic book series.  Pulling double duty, McCrea has also created 15 brand new images for Topps, exclusive to Mars Attacks Heritage- four of which are unveiled today.

The 15 images, officially titled ‘The New Universe Subset,’ offer a glimpse into the new Mars Attacks, which build from IDW’s upcoming comic book.  In addition, the subset will include insight into the new series, through a narrative that unfolds on the back of each card.

“We wanted John to treat these cards like miniature comic book covers,” said Adam Levine, Topps’ Licensing Manager. “To weave the cards and comics together even further, we crafted a story that introduces fans to our reimagining of Mars Attacks, beginning years before the Martians invade and continuing into the future, perhaps even beyond what you’ll see in IDW’s series in 2012.  If fans look closely, they may even spot a few hints at what lies ahead.”

Along with providing art for ‘The New Universe Subset,’ John McCrea recently paid a visit to Topps in New York, and found time to contribute a limited number of original, hand-drawn sketch cards to be randomly inserted into packs of Mars Attacks Heritage.

“I’m very excited to be able to play in this world of aliens and robots and giant insects,” said McCrea.  ”Mars Attacks is right up my alley; it’s everything I love to draw.  I’m thrilled to be a part of the creation of this new world and to be able to my own stamp on it.”

Mars Attacks Heritage releases this July, while IDW’s new comic book debuts in June.  Both are currently available for order.

The Library of American Comics Goes Daily

The Library of American Comics Goes Daily

New Library of American Comics ESSENTIALS series starting in September

San Diego, CA (April 18, 2012) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce The Library of American Comics ESSENTIALS, a new series from its multiple Eisner Award-winning imprint that is “the gold standard for archival comic strip reprints.” Each volume of LOAC ESSENTIALS will reprint early daily newspaper strips that are essential to the history of comics presented in a novel format, 11″ wide by 4.25″ high, each page containing a single daily strip.

“It’s different from our other books which generally contain two or three years of strips printed three to a page,” says LOAC Creative Director Dean Mullaney. “By reproducing the strips one per page in an oblong format, it allows us to have an experience similar to what newspaper buyers had fifty to a hundred years ago—reading the comics one day at a time.”

Every volume in the series contains a year’s worth of dailies bound in hardcover, retailing for $19.99. Each page will showcase the title given to that daily by the cartoonist, plus the weekday and date. In addition to recreating the feeling of reading sequential comics one at a time, the idea sprang in part from Harold Gray‘s set of bound Little Orphan Annie proofbooks. Syndicate proofs come in differing varieties, but dailies are often bound annually, in a thick one-strip-per-page book.

“When reading a great run of dailies,” adds Associate Editor Bruce Canwell, “the proofbook format creates an irresistible urge to flip the page and see what happens in the next day’s strip.”

Another inspiration in creating these volumes was the Hyperion line of classic strips edited by Bill Blackbeard in the 1970s, which now command high prices on the collector market. “Those books were an education to many of us thirty-five years ago,” Mullaney continues. “With LOAC ESSENTIALS we take the baton from Bill so we can preserve many more classic daily strips that are essential to the history of comics.”

The series premieres in September. The first three titles are indicative of the stellar line-up to come:

Volume 1
Baron Bean by George Herriman. The first of a three-book sub-set by the creator of Krazy Kat that will reprint for the first time the complete series from 1916-1919 starring the character Gilbert Seldes called “half Micawber, half Charlie Chapin.” Edited by Dean Mullaney with an introduction by Jared Gardner. September 2012.

[Baron Bean Image]

Volume 2
Polly and Her Pals by Cliff Sterrett. A complete year (1933) of surrealistic hilarity featuring Polly, Maw and Paw Perkins, cousin Ashur, Neewah, and the rest of the outrageous Perkins household. Edited by Dean Mullaney with an introduction by Bruce Canwell. January 2013.

[Polly and her Pals Image]

Volume 3
The Gumps: The Saga of Mary Gold by Sidney Smith. In the early 1920s Sidney Smith augmented his gag-a-day style in The Gumps with suspense and soap opera continuity, creating what was arguably the most popular strip of its time. With The Saga of Mary Gold in 1928 and 1929 he cemented his reputation by creating a storyline that changed the comics forever, a saga that was called “one of the ten biggest events in comics history” by Hogan’s Alley magazine. Edited and with an introduction by Jared Gardner. March 2013.

The Library of American Comics is the world’s #1 publisher of classic newspaper comic strips, with 14 Eisner Award nominations and three wins for best book. LOAC has become “the gold standard for archival comic strip reprints…. The research and articles provide insight and context, and most importantly the glorious reproduction of the material has preserved these strips for those who knew them and offers a new gateway to adventure for those discovering them for the first time.” – Scoop

Artist Stephen Baskerville, the original inker on the classic issues, joins Wildman on interiors as inker, as Wildman also provides eye-catching covers.

TRANSFORMERS: REGENRATION ONE comic is an important book to TRANSFORMERS fans,” IDW Senior Editor John Barber commented, “and expectations are high. Fortunately Simon, Andrew, and Stephen have only gotten better since the last issue!”

IDW Brings Genghis Khan To Comics

April 13, 2012
IDW Brings Genghis Khan To Comics

A standalone graphic novel based on the greatest military commander in world history

[Genghis Khan Cover Image]San Diego, CA (April 12, 2012) – This July, IDW Publishing will bring you Secret Battles of Genghis Khan, the story of how a boy named Temujin became the founder and Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. Adapting Khan’s engrossing life to graphic-novel form are writer Daryl Gregory, award-winning novelist of The Devil’s Alphabet and Pandemonium, and artists Alan Robinson (Weekly World News, Phoenix Without Ashes) and Jay Fotos (Locke & Key). The all-new, 104-page graphic novel will also feature a special painted cover by Sam Shearon as well as back-up material detailing Khan’s life and battles.
[Interior Page 15]
“My job,” Gregory said, “was to comb through his history to find the key moments in his life and discover what drove him. Alan had the toughest job, though. He had to show not only the emotional lives of a huge cast of characters, but deliver the epic sweep of the story, with one bloody battle after another. People are going to be blown away by what he’s done.”

To this day, Khan is known as one of the greatest leaders by conquering lands one military [Interior Page 30]victory after another. By the end of his life, the Mongol Empire occupied a large percentage of Central Asia and China. Although famous for being heartless, Khan was a man that was both brutal and fair. He was cruel to his enemies, but even-handed to those that were loyal, no matter what their tribal background or ethnicity. Secret Battles of Genghis Khan outlines the history and experiences of the man that is regarded as the founding father of Mongolia.

SECRET BATTLES OF GENGHIS KHAN ($21.99, 104 pages, full color) will be available in stores in July 2012. ISBN: 978-1-61377-283-6.

Mr. Wood started his career with the retail chain Things From Another World, before a long run in Marketing at Dark Horse Comics, capped by several years as that company’s Marketing Director. He joined IDW as director of retail marketing in 2010, and has nearly 20 years of combined experience in the comic book industry.

As a company, IDW has grown exponentially in recent years, expanding both its comics and book catalogs, and continuing its leadership in the digital space. As Vice President of Marketing, Mr. Wood will play a key role in driving continued growth in all these areas, and lead the company’s public relations, and tradeshow efforts as well.

“I could not be happier about where I am,” said Mr. Wood. “The whole crew at IDW is amazing. Every day I get to work with great people at the best comic publisher there is. The only problem is that I have to buy more bookshelves, because the books we’re putting out are unreal. I look forward to new challenges, and continuing to expand IDW’s presence everywhere.”

Mr. Wood also plays guitar for The Woodford Brownley Band, and is right wing for the IDW soccer team, where he spends most of his time injured.
