Korea’s Educational Comics

Bookmark and Share

The Obama StoryThe Korean Times is reporting that educational comic books are flourishing in Korea as a new way to grab the attention of children and engage teachers and adults.  That wave of educational comics is making it’s way across the seas to here in the United States.

A comic bio series in English published by Dasan Books has been adopted as supplementary textbooks at a U.S. elementary school in New Jersey.

The New Jersey Fort Lee Elementary School announced it will use “The Obama Story,” “The Bill Gates Story” and “The Charles Darwin Story” for history, social studies and bilingual education classes for the second half of this year. The three books are part of the comic biography series aimed at third to sixth graders.

In February 2009 Dasan Books even opened up a branch in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey to enter the U.S. market. Six biography comics have so far been produced, including ones about Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Hillary Clinton. By August, volumes on Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Stephen Hawking will be released.  Their plan is to release 50 bio comics over the next 18 months.

The Obama Story clocks in at 200 pages and targets children ages 8 to 12.  It focuses on his life from his early child hood up to his recent election as President.

The comic biography series is available in some nations in North America and Asia via online bookstores.

Barack the Barbarian #4

Bill – Ha! We’ve got the Elephant cultists on the run, Manny!

Cultist 1 – How could this happen to us?  Shouldn’t they be grateful to us for our fiscal responsibility?

Cultist 2 – Or our superior understanding of global economic and diplomatic finesse?

Cultist 3 – If we can just make it to the warehouse, we can hide under the tea bags!

and

Barack the Barbarian – It is a goddess!  But how is she also a treasure?  And what exactly… does she want from me?

Hilaria – Her name is Liberty.  And she wants you to re-light her torch.

and

Barack the Barbarian – She’s right.  A sword might help you win liberty, but it takes more than that to sustain it.

Black Panther #12

News reporter – …calling itself the Desturi have overthrown the government of Wakanda in what is being called a ‘nearly bloodless coup’.  All Ambassadors have been recalled and all foreigners have been ordered out of the country immediately…

Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love #3

Aladdin – But even so, Islam is not nearly as restrictive as you in the west might think.  In many ways, we are even more progressive than you.

Cinderella – Tell that to the pair of tourists arrested in Dubai last year for drinking orange juice in public during Ramadan.  Or what about the Afghani women jailed on charges of “illegal sexual relations” after they’d been raped by strangers?

Aladdin – That’s hardly fair.  You’re judging an entire belief system by the actions of a few extremists.

Barack: The Barbarian #3 – The entire issue is full of good political zingers but we’ll just provide the back and forth between Hilaria and Barack about the demon elephant that’s been summoned to take them on.

Hilaria – What is that thing?

Barack – A conflation of failed policies, delusional political theory and wretched excess.

Hilaria – How can we defeat something like that?

Barack – It will defeat itself.  All we have to do is stay out of the way… until it tears itself apart from within.

“Female Force” Graphic Novel Featuring Clinton, Palin, Obama & Kennedy Bios In Stores This Wednesday

Female Force Volume I, a trade paperback containing the first four issues of the popular biography comic book series will be available at comic shops and newsstands on October 14.

The collection includes the unabridged issues featuring Hillary Clinton, Sarah Plain, Michelle Obama, and Caroline Kennedy.  Additionally, the 96-page anthology contains an updated version of the Sarah Palin issue that addresses her resignation announcement as Alaska’s governor in July. The issue originally was published in February 2009.

“Each of these women has a powerful life story to share,” said Bluewater president Darren Davis. “And each has made a significant contribution to the political and cultural landscape.”

A new cover by artist Vinnie Tartamella, who has been responsible for many of the individual issue cover likenesses, features all four women.

Female Force offers a broad examination of strong and influential women who are shaping modern history and culture. Each woman featured in the trade paperback will include alternate cover drawings.

“We are thrilled with the reception of these bio comics. We know that this trade paperback anthology is only the first of many volumes to come,” Davis added.

The comic book series, launched earlier this year, has drawn considerable media attention, including features on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and “Live with Regis and Kelly.” It has also been featured in such periodicals as People Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, USA Today and thousands of blogs and other media outlets.

The suggested retail price (SRP) for the upcoming trade paperback is $15.99.

Hillary Clinton Gets Comic Book Treatment

Move over Barack Obama and John McCain, you two aren’t the only one’s getting comic book versions of your biographies.  Come January, Bluewater Productions will be publishing a comic book about Hillary Clinton’s life in time for the Inauguration of the new President.

“We’re excited to bring this book to the table,” says Bluewater’s Vice Preseident Jason Schultz. “There are a couple comics focusing on John McCain and Barack Obama, we wanted to feature Hilary who broke all the rules in this election and made history”

Publisher Darren G. Davis said, “John McCain and Barack Obama have all of the spotlight. Our goal is to show the historical impact that maybe underrated from by those who are too facetted on the candidates to fully understand the historical impact of being a few votes show for the 1st female president. Many people are daunted by the endless stream of articles on the candidates. A visual medium provides perspective that is not only accessible but more relatable to the average person without loosing any of the information involved”.

“I am writing Hillary Clinton from a perceptive of someone who did not admire her at 1st and throughout the process of research has come to admire and be utterly fascinated by what is obviously the most underrated historical figure in modern History.   “Said writer Neal Bailey.
