Little Russia is a fascinating look at the real Canadian co-operative village

A small village in the north of Quebec, Guyenne is run as a cooperative, with 50% of the inhabitants’ paychecks going into a communal pot to develop the colony―hence the village’s nickname of “Little Russia.” Based on the memories of author Francis Desharnais’ grandparents, who lived in Guyenne from 1948 to 1968, this moving graphic novel delves into family history to explore Canada’s rural heritage through the lens of both grassroots socialism and early feminism. An intimate story of epic scale, and the winner of multiple “Best Book” awards, Little Russia is a fascinating foray into an unusual and largely forgotten social experiment.

Testament is an interesting sc-fi graphic novel about faith and discovery

Meet Testament: the premier caretaker android for the future. Not only were they designed to care for the wellbeing of dozens of interstellar passengers; explorers, scientists, poets, and artists – they have also downloaded millennia of religious texts and liturgies to best serve the members of a religious commune that make up the bulk of their human charges. These members of the Order of the Abundant Grace of the Cosmic Christ, having already chosen a monastic and scholarly life, are ideal for their mission: a one-way voyage to discover all they can about a miraculous far-flung planet capable of life and, by choice, not repopulate.

Soon, only Sister Judith remains on the distant planet, facing decades of life alone with her caretaker and no other human company. Struggling with faith and despair, she seeks purpose, or perhaps something else, in a sudden research trip into hazardous territory. Testament tries to carry out their directives, while staring down their own immortality, and questioning their place in a spiritual infinity equipped with the knowledge and traditions of people who could never have imagined a being like them.

Exclusive: Dracula: Book IV – The Undead from Matt Wagner and Kelley Jones Launches this Thursday (Corrected)

Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel of gothic horror created the most famous literary character of all time: the terrifying vampire lord, Dracula. Now acclaimed comic-book creators Matt Wagner and Kelley Jones are reuniting for the fourth and final chapter in their epic series of original graphic novels about the shadowy history of the world’s most famous literary character with Dracula: Book IV – The Undead. The project launches this Thursday, October 1, on Kickstarter at 9AM PT/Noon ET.

Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 book is one of the most revered icons of the horror genre, and throughout the first three volumes of their smash hit series, Wagner and Jones have stayed true to Stoker’s original canon while also providing an all-new and terrifying look at Dracula’s history and his nefarious actions that take place just off-stage in the novel’s chain of events. But, curiously…the novel’s climax has always left many fans with an unsettled feeling—as if perhaps the infamous vampire lord wasn’t actually destroyed by his enemies…

The first three volumes of Wagner and Jones’s Dracula saga were smash hits—Book 1 broke the Top 20 in Kickstarter’s all-time most successful graphic novel campaigns—and this ultimate chapter promises to be even bigger, with 122 pages of spine-chilling story and art. Wagner and Jones are once again joined for this macabre foray into the shadows of Dracula’s sinister schemes by the stellar talents of José Villarrubia on colors and lettering by Rob Leigh. The Kickstarter campaign will be the only source for these beautiful, European-album sized hardcover editions of this book as well as many exceptional rewards tiers.

See what David Dastmalchian, Eric Powell, and Keith Rosson have to say about the project and sign up so you don’t miss out when it launches Thursday!

  • Promotional graphic featuring a quote by David Dastmalchian about Dracula's history, illustrated with dark, horror-themed artwork, including figures reminiscent of vampires and wolves.

Toby knows she hasn’t been the easiest person to be around lately, but she would never vandalize her classmates’ stuff—she’s been framed! Can Toby get to the bottom of this mystery before the end of the school day, or will she find herself stuck in detention for the foreseeable future?

The Mess is an intriguing graphic novel about reconnecting with those we love

When her semi-estranged and penniless hoarder father dies, Erin Messina is tasked with cleaning out his house before the bank forecloses on it. This otherwise thankless task is given a purpose, however, when she remembers the original Picasso drawing her father was gifted in 1964. She enlists her teenage son, Jackson, to spend spring break looking for their possible ticket to long-term financial stability. Jackson, resentful and eager to shirk responsibility, befriends twin skateboarders who live in the hood, and tell him about the violent murder that happened directly across the street from his grandfather’s home — and the murderer who still lives there. Emotional baggage, paranoia, and frayed nerves stretch the Messina’s relationship to the brink, as The Mess careens to a thrilling final act that includes… two-way radio communication with the dead?
