DC Comics Celebrates 75 Years of Robin

This year marks the 75th Anniversary of Robin, the world’s most famous sidekick! DC Comics is celebrating the Boy Wonder all year long including five new and returning comics commemorating multiple incarnations of the iconic character.

In addition to headlining Grayson, Robin: Son of Batman, and We Are Robin, he will also be featured later this year in a new weekly series, Batman & Robin Eternal, and “Robin War,” a crossover event that will begin this winter.

Batman & Robin Eternal, the sequel to the blockbuster weekly series Batman Eternal, will begin on October 7 with weekly installments over the course of six months. Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV will act as “showrunners” for the series with Tynion as lead writer. Supporting Tynion will be Snyder, Tim Seeley, Genevieve Valentine, Steve Orlando, Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly and Ed Brisson, all scripting key issues of the weekly series. Artists contributing to the series include Tony S. Daniel, Paul Pelletier and Scot Eaton.

The month of December will see a “Robin War” where Gotham Academy, Robin: Son of Batman, and We Are Robin will crossover for five weeks. These issues will be bookended by two one-shot specials written by Tom King and story by King, Lee Bermejo, and Pat Gleason, with art by Khary Randolph and more.

In order to commemorate the various Robins throughout the years, a brand new infographic was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con. Most famous is Dick Grayson, but Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Damian Wayne, and Carrie Kelley have all proudly carried the moniker. Furthermore, the newest iteration of Robin in The New DC Universe now appears as the We Are Robin team, a group of teens who all embody the idea of Robin and bravely save the streets of Gotham City.

Review: Catwoman #41

Catwoman #41 CoverShe’s still Gotham’s queen of crime – but now, in order to work all the angles, Selina Kyle is back as Catwoman!

You ever come into a mob movie half way through the story? You can piece together what’s going on and who’s who, as well as the alliances, double crosses, and attempted hits that occurred before? That’s what it was like for me to come into Catwoman #41.

I read the first issue of the new direction, and found it solid, but like an idiot, I didn’t continue with it. Selina Kyle is the head of one of Gotham’s mob families, and things have been thrown into chaos. Add in the fact that Batman is missing, and presumed dead, and things are getting even more tense. Without having read those previous issues, I generally figured out what was going on, but the significance and finer details were missing. I recognized the comic’s excellence in both story and art, but it’s a tough one to completely recommend. It’s just not a good starting point for new readers, but not every comic needs to be.

Writer Genevieve Valentine weaves a mob tale that’s fit for the big screen. It’s exactly what I love about that genre. There’s betrayal, there’s gamesmanship, there’s backstabbing and double crosses, and there’s the long game. It’s a mob epic that just so happens to involve some of Batman’s rogue gallery. It’s great mob drama.

David Messina‘s art is fantastic capturing the tone and seriousness of it all. It feels like there’s a little Jae Lee influence, though it’s bit cleaner. It’s a style I’d expect to find in a Vertigo book actually. It complements the quality of the story with great use of wide shots and close up shots as well as the panels. It fits its subject well.

I’m recommending this as a buy, not particularly this issue, but since Valentine took over. This issue on its own isn’t a great starting point for new readers, though I’d imagine those already reading will be pleased. New readers might want to go back a bit. It seems like a series that’s both beautifully written and drawn. Sadly I haven’t kept up with the series, but not time like the present to go back and catch up.

DC Comics announces Klarion and a new creative team for Catwoman

DC Comics continues the announcements of what we’ll see this coming October. Today, the publisher announced a new series featuring Klarion the Witch Boy, who makes his New 52 debut. Talk about a series I wasn’t expecting. Klarion is a  Jack Kirby creation dating back to 1973. The character is a sorcerer who has appeared on the Young Justice cartoon series. The new series will be written by Ann Nocenti with art by Trevor McCarthy.

Replacing Nocenti on Catwoman starting with issue 35 is newcomer when it comes to writing comics, Genevieve Valentine who is joined by artist Garry Brown.

Spinning out of events in Batman Eternal, Selina Kyle has accepted the family mantle and embraced her true criminal side, but is Gotham City ready for her reign? And with the Cat away, who’s the stranger haunting the empty rooftops of the city?

Klarion #1 will be on sale October 8th, while Catwoman #35 will hit shelves on October 22nd.
