Review: Faith #3

faith_003_cover-b_sauvageMild-mannered blogger by day. L.A.’s leading superhero by night. Faith Herbert – aka the high-flying hero called Zephyr – has come a long way since she first set foot in the City of Angels. But nothing can prepare her for the pinnacle of all her experiences to date: California’s biggest comic book convention! But even amidst a sea of fellow fans, cosplayers, and collectibles, crime waits for no man! With thousands watching and even more at stake, can Faith prevent all-pandemonium – and preserve her secret identity – when the fun turns to frenzy?

I have two questions for you; 1) Do you read comics? 2) Have you ever thought about being a superhero?

If the answer is yes to one of those, then you should really think about adding Faith to your pull list. There’s a lightness to this issue that, while present all series, isn’t as frequently seen in other comics. The closest I can get to describing this series without any spoilers is that it’s Ultimate Spider-Man for a new generation – it’s a fun, upbeat and positive comic, but it’s also telling some really great stories.

Now if you’ll allow me to get a little personal, today wasn’t exactly the best of days for me (I’ll spare you the details), so when I sat down with the print copy of Faith #3 it wouldn’t be inaccurate to say that I was in need of a bit of a pick-me-up.

And for the ten minutes or so it took me to read the comic, I can honestly say I felt better. This was exactly what I needed after the day I had; with Faith I was able to ignore the world and get lost in the comic as the titular character attended a comic book convention with her boyfriend, the sheltered former assassin Archer. It’s a brilliant read, and I honestly cannot recommend this series to you enough.

The art in the fantasy sequences is whimsically brilliant, Pere Perez (with Andrew Dalhouse‘s colouring) and  Maguerite Sauvage handle different segments of the comic, but their styles complement each other fantastically well – so well, in fact, that I’m running out of hyperbolic adjectives to describe this comic.

If you read comics, or you’re involved in geek culture in anyway, then this is the series for you. Faith reminds me why I love comics every month, and I can’t thank Jody Houser, Pere Perez, Andrew Dalhouse and Maugerite Sauvage enough for that.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

doom-patrol-1Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Faith #3 (Valiant) – I love this series. There’s a fun, infectious energy here that just grabs you and pulls you in for one fantastically uplifting ride. Plus, Faith heads to a comicon with Archer – and that’s going to be fantastic.

Action Comics #963 (DC Comics) – It’s a Superman comic, and the Man Of Steel has grown on me considerably since Rebirth. I’m looking forward to finding out who the depowered Clark Kent is, and how Metropolis reacts to a different Superman. Should be fun.

All-Star Batman #2 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder is, at least for me, one of the best writers to take on the Dark Knight in some time. Any time I see his name attached to a bat-project I’ll be reading it.

Dark Souls: Legends Of The Flame #1 (Titan Comics) – I am a huge fan of the Dark Soulsworld and it’s incredibly deep lore (especially because it’s not spoon fed to you throughout the games), so getting a chance to explore that world’s stories through this two part story makes me a little excited.

Old Man Logan #11 (Marvel) – Old Man Logan is the tormented Wolverine that comic fans remember, without the near immortality his healing factor had become. It’s that vulnerability that makes the promised scrap between Logan and a whole whack of ninjas so enticing – Jeff Lemire hasn’t been shy about the old man having his hairy arse handed to to him, so there’s a legitimate chance that Logan will loose the fight this issue (well…maybe). Either way, it’s gonna be bloody.

Shay

Top Pick: Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Katana (DC Comics) – Katana was underused in the movie and she’s really an interesting character with a really dope backstory. So, here’s a chance to get to know almost everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Katana but, the movie refused to show.

Black Monday Murders #1 – 2nd Printing (Image Comics) This reprint is coming out the same day as Issue #2 which means you can play catch up and see what you missed before going in for round 2. There’s occultism, money cartels and,  evil magical banks that might be running things shadow government style. Who doesn’t like a good conspiracy theory?

Lady Killer 2 #2 (Dark Horse) – Hit squads, hitman mash-ups and lady hitwomen. Making murder for hire as normal as ordering a pizza or going grocery shopping.

Batgirl & The Birds of Prey #2 (DC Comics) – The “Who is Oracle” Story arc is almost over and you don’t want to miss a thing!

Throwaways #3 (Image) – I’ve got some high hopes for this issue of Throwaways. When I reviewed issue #2 last month I was like warm on it, mostly because I expected more. It looks like this issue is going to deliver and give a bit more the the story itself, the Abby & Dean and the plot is going to get thick and juicy enough to make it feel like you’re reading through split pea soup.

Brett

Top Pick: Detective Comics #940 (DC Comics) – Something major is happening… is this the end of Tim Drake!? DC has been tight lipped with this one, and teasing out something major will happen, so get this issue and the Teen Titans.

Doom Patrol #1 (DC’s Young Animal/DC Comics) – So much hype and I’m beyond intrigued to see what this new imprint within DC is like. I checked out the panel at San Diego Comic-Con and they sold me with what’s planned and the look of it all. The vibe I’m getting is superhero meets Vertigo, something I’m totally on board with.

Hadrian’s Wall #1 (Image Comics) – A murder mystery in space! I’ve read the first four issues of the series and it’s really good.

NVRLND #2 (451 Media Group) – A spin on the story of Peter Pan, but the comic takes place in modern LA and Peter’s the head of a rock band and Hook is a drug dealer. The two issues have been solid and well worth checking out if you want a more adult take on Pan.

Raina Telgemeier’s Ghosts (Graphix) – A family moves due to the illness of a daughter and wind up in an area with lots of ghosts. The concept sounds touching and fun, but really it’s Raina Telgemeier and this will be one of the top-selling comics and graphic novels of the year. Find out why Telgemeier’s graphic novels crush the competition and outsells the spandex crowd!

Review: Faith #2

FAITH_002_COVER-D_HETRICKTrapped with no aid in sight, Faith is coming face to face with her very-first supervillain! LA’s own sky-soaring hero always wanted to be like the comic book characters that inspired her…but is she ready to deal with the consequences of being a bonafide superhero? And, as if a new arch-nemesis weren’t enough, a shadowy figure is closing in on Faith’s secret identity! How’s that for a cliffhanger?!

Full disclosure: I’m a Valiant fan, and enjoy almost everything the publisher has on the racks, but there’s something about Faith that just clicks with me. This will be a far from impartial review, but maybe by the time you’ve read it you’ll want to read Faith as well.

That Faith is a plus sized woman is going to be something that you notice right away, but it’s far from the most notable thing about the character or the comic. Faith is a wonderful character to read about; she’s a life long comic book fan who plays DnD, and reminds me more of myself than any character I’ve read about before.

Faith #1 ended on an almost cliffhanger that’s resolved in a really satisfying way, with Jody Houser seeming to take several light jabs at the typical comic book story stylings along the way. The comic is jointly illustrated by Pere Perez and Marguerite Sauvage, with each artist handling a different time frame to enable the reader to easily separate the flashbacks handled by Sauvage with the present day pages of Perez; tying it all together is Andrew Dalhouse‘s colouring work that looks as if it came straight from a water coloured cartoon.

Visually there’s a very whimsical feel to the comic, which balances brilliantly with Houser’s writing style – I did tell you I’m a huge fan of the series, so trying to be impartial was never going to happen. There have been a few comics this year that have elicited a childlike glee in me as I’m reminded of why comics are so great – Voracious was one of those, and Faith is another.

I used this Jody Houser quote in my review of the first issue, but it’s a great quote, so I’ll end with it today: “[Faith] represents a group of people not featured in comics very often is important, but it’s not the most interesting thing about her. People want to see themselves in comics, but they don’t want to see a character who is just one aspect of themselves—they want to see a fully fledged person.”

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

GENZERO_001_COVER-A_MOONEYWednesdays are new comic book day!

Alex

Top Pick: Faith #2 (Valiant) – I really can’t say enough about how much I’m enjoying this series. If you’re not reading it you’re missing out on one of the best comics from any publisher being released right now. Faith is a series that’s fun, that has a more positive outlook on things and takes some very light jabs at industry tropes. And it’s visually stunning.

Action Comics #962 (DC Comics) – It’s not often that I read a comic where Superman feels like he’s actually in a fight for his life, so watching the Man Of Steel in a rematch against Doomsday has been incredibly fun – even if the chances of him losing are nil.

Blue Beetle Rebirth #1 (DC Comics) – I recently dug out the pre-New 52 run featuring Jaime Reyes, and wondered why I never read the series through the New 52 iteration. With how easy many of the Rebirth comics have been for new readers, I’m looking forward to this.

Generation Zero #1 (Valiant) – A new series from Valiant? Don’t mind if I do.

Northguard #1 (Chapterhouse Comics) – An incredibly underrated publisher, Chapterhouse have some fantastic series on the racks, one of which, Captain Canuck is a genuine pleasure to read. I’m excited for this spin off series that I know very little about (which is deliberate on my part), because based on Chapterhouse’s track record, this promises to be a blast.

Anthony

Top Pick: Pretty Deadly TP Vol. 2 (Image Comics) – The first volume of Pretty Deadly was a dark, poetic, bloody journey that featured one of the best creative teams in comics…period. The second arc here is collected for those that missed out on the single issues (or just loved it so much that the trade is worthy of purchasing) and features more striking images from Emma Rios and Jordie Bellaire’s colours with a hypnotic script by Kelly Sue DeConnick that will put you in the good kind of trance that makes Pretty Deadly a difficult title to put down.

Island #10 (Image Comics) – Anthologies tend to be hit and miss but not Island. Emma Rios and Brandon Graham have opened the creative floodgates by curating a slew of material from both artists more well known and those perhaps yet to be discovered by a wider audience. It’s also refreshing in that each and every issue of Island defines variety in covering a wide array of genres and material.

Faith #2 (Valiant) – It’s a very warming feeling to remember that Faith has her own ongoing series. Jody Houser provides such a great voice for Faith, blending her pop culture quips with dramatic moments. Maintaing the back and forth art style of Pere Perez during the present time and Marguerite Sauvage doing Faith’s fantasies from the mini series is an extra nice touch and has been played with wonderfully so far.

Generation Zero #1 (Valiant) – Straight from the pages of Harbinger comes a new team of super powered teens. Minus the Imperium title, there hasn’t been much explored in the Harbinger side of the Valiant universe recently besides a few appearances here and there in other titles so it will be very interesting to see what Fred Van Lente and Francis Portela have prepared. This has a very New Mutants type appearance featuring a younger group of misfits so the parallels between characters will be very intriguing to see in how it will be presented.

Sombra #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue of Sombra was a fairly solid introduction to this story of a DEA agent about to throw herself into the middle of a tense situation with the Mexican Cartel. With the introductory exposition out of the way, hopefully being thrown further into the fire is something on Justin Jordan’s mind. Raul Trevino’s photo realistic backgrounds with the shadowy but bright colours of Juan Useche really paint an uncomfortable tone, especially with how the violence felt so sudden in the first issue.

Shay

Top Pick: Alena (Dark Horse) – This is a great time to get on board with this horror comic treasure. This TP gives you the whole story so that you’e all caught up before it becomes a live action Swedish horror film. There’s mean girls, a best friend who had been dead for a year and lots of murder an blood.

Batgirl #2 (DC Comics) – This issue should be packed with enough kick ass girl power to wipe the taste of the Killing Joke out of your mouth and combined with last weeks Birds of Prey get you back on team Babs.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer , Season 10, #30 (Dark Horse) – All good things must come to an end and Season 10 off BTVS is no exception. Issue #330 ends this killer story arc and will remind us all why we keep reading and still enjoy watching the reruns.

Brett

Top Pick: Generation Zero #1 (Valiant) – I’ve been waiting for this series since it was announced and wondering when we’d next see Generation Zero since last we saw them (during Harbinger Wars?). I’m hoping for a new take on the New Mutants formula, and honestly that’s what I expect. It’s also an area Marvel has dropped the ball on, so glad to see Valiant picking it up and running with it.

Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #1 (IDW Publishing) – It’s new Atomic Robo, really nuff said when it comes to why you should be checking this series out. I’ve yet to be disappointed by any volume of the series released. It’s always packed with action and humor, and constantly entertains.

The Hellblazer #1 (DC Comics) – I’m intrigued as to what version of John Constantine we’ll be getting. The Rebirth issue gave me some hope, but the real test is with this first issue.

Northguard #1 (Chapterhouse Comics) – Putting out fun, positive, superhero comics with lots of action and humor. I can’t wait to check out this new series which we got a tease of in their Summer Special.

The Revisionist #3 (Aftershock Comics) – Time traveling fun action. It’s entertainment for a genre that lends itself to all sorts of madness and interesting twists.
