My shelves sag and strain a little bit more and long boxes overstuffed with new comics, but the large volume of comics and graphic novels alone will keep us busy for quite a while.

Below is a snapshot of all of the items I came home with.  Highlights include:

  • Charles Soule gave out guitar picks for his upcoming comic 27.
  • With Fubar you got a graphic novel, some pins, posters and a few unique sketches.
  • I gushed when meeting Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá and their autographs is a prized posession.
  • I have a cute USB drive from Mimobot.
  • Archaia gave me quite a work out with a stack of graphic beautiful graphic novels including Return of the Dapper Men.
  • Rest from Top Cow looks beautiful.
  • Jerry Robinson was signing autographs, and I took advantage.
  • And finally Richard Miller hooked me up with a zombified portrait.

Review – De: Tales

Bookmark and Share

De: TalesCan I just award best graphic of the year now to De: Tales?  Holy shit are the brother team of Fábio Moon and Gabirel Bá good (great actually).  The graphic novel is a collection of short stories from “Urban Brazil.”  These are more slice of life similar to their limited series Daytripper.  And like that series, these stories are emotional and some get to you.

Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá are Brazilian twins who share an award-winning talent for comics and an abiding love of the medium. Following in the wake of brothers Gilbert & Jaime Hernandez and Tomer & Asaf Hanuka, Moon & Bá bring their considerable skills to Dark Horse in De:Tales, their first major American release!

This collection of short stories features the pair working together, in tandem, or separately-trading off on the roles of writing and illustrating, sharing those roles, or flying solo. Brimming with all the details of human life, their charming tales move from the urban reality of their home in São Paulo to the magical realism of their Latin American background, living up to the twins’ critical acclaim and proving that they are a talented pair to watch out for.

These stories are magical, but true to life.  They’re poetic and at times gritty.  They’re honest and fantasy simultaneously.  I love the work these two produce.  It’s amazing to see what these twins do and they work it quite well here, in fact each write the same story in their own way.  Comparing the end results is amazing.

People have a misconception as to what comics can do.  Most see them as tales of spandex and big guns and big pecks.  When talking to someone who’s in that mindset, I tell them about these two and their beautiful stories.  They are an example of the power of the medium and what it can do.  Just amazing.

Don’t Miss Out On Casanova, The Most Mind-Blowing Book Of The Century!

Official Press Release

Don’t Miss Out On CASANOVA, The Most Mind-Blowing Book Of The Century!

It’s the sold-out book everyone’s talking about, the series every critic is lauding, and the most mind-bending comic of the century—it’s Casanova! Eisner Award-winners Matt Fraction, Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon are the masterminds behind Casanova and if you’ve missed out on a single issue of the series, now’s your chance to get caught up as Casanova #3 hits stores alongside new printings of Casanova #1 and Casanova #2.

Chronicling the mad adventures of everyone’s favorite terminally directionless, morally-unhinged secret operative, Casanova #3 finds the world bracing itself for a real-life miracle man in the form of a Buddha-imitating street magician…and Casanova Quinn swoops in and snatches the would be savior!

Here’s what the critics have to say about Casanova:

“One of the greatest and strangest comic books of the last decade…” – GQ.com

“Matt Fraction’s agile blending of hyper-dense plot and substantial characters, concepts of sexuality and identity, robots and metaphysics makes Casanova that rare comic that can use genre conventions in new and exciting ways. It crosses genre boundaries and rises above any perceived limitations. In Casanova style is not substance, substance is the new style, and what a beautiful style it is: human, thrilling, transcendent.”—Timothy Callahan, ComicBookResources.Com

“It blew my mind so hard that I have never stopped picking up the pieces.” – Laura Hudson, ComicsAlliance.com
Casanova is a delightfully crazy sci-fi romp and a great addition to the Icon line. Don’t make the mistake of passing it up a second time.” – Jesse Schedeen, IGN.com

“Fraction doesn’t waste a single panel. In fact, he fills his pages with them, but it never feels cluttered or forcibly compressed…And Gabriel Bá handles the script perfectly with his tight, highly detailed artwork.” – Danny Djeljosevic, ComicsBulletin.com

“I am tremendously grateful to Icon for giving me so many reasons to jump into the zany world of Casanova, and will be sticking around to see what happens next. Matt Fraction and Gabriel Bá have created a comic that is supremely energetic and unique…pick Casanova up and give it a look.” –  Majin Fu, AintItCoolNews.com

With Casanova’s wicked sister Zephyr in tow on the new mission, will Quinn be able to get the job done without Zephyr stabbing him in the back? Find out in Casanova #3, out this September! Plus, don’t miss your chance to catch up on the whole series in one jaw-dropping sitting when Casanova #1 Second Printing Variant and Casanova #2 Second Printing Variant hit store shelves the same day!
