BOOM!/KaBOOM!/BOOM! Box/Archaia Comics We Want on TV

2014 BOOM! LogoLast week it was announced that BOOM! Studios had signed a first look deal with 20th Century Fox TV. There’s a chance we’ll begin to see some of BOOM! (and their imprints KaBOOM!, BOOM! Box, and Archaia) comics come to the small screen.

We’re big fans of the publisher and thought it’d be nice to help Fox choose some comics to turn into television shows. Here’s 11 (cause we go to 11) that’d be awesome (and there’s so many more to choose from). In no particular order…..

Black Market – One of the company’s newest releases, it deals with the fact that the cure for numerous diseases might reside in the blood of superheroes. This is the story of the guy, and his criminal brother, who work on making that happen. Two issues in it’s interesting, and the slight teases of the heroes will keep the budget down. This is a morality tale with some great character focus.

Day Men – Fox was ahead of its time with Kindred: The Embraced, a vampire television show based off of White Wolf’s World of Darkness. Day Men focuses on the human staff that deal with the day to day dirty work.

Evil Empire – Most stories start with the evil government already in power. This is the story about how it gets there. With the 2016 Presidential election coming up, this would be a perfect time to get a pilot going on this one.

Hacktivist – Speaking of timely stories… this one has Anonymous actually being the founders of a Facebook like company and dealing with revolutions in the Middle East. Maybe it’s too close to reality?

Hexed – A female thief that deals in the occult underground. Pair this with Sleepy Hollow (now a BOOM! comic series!) and you have an awesome two hour block full of diversity.

Imagine Agents – I really want this to be a Pixar like animated movie. The story involves agents who deal with the real creatures that we think are our imaginary friends. The series was adorable, and I just want more and more. This would definitely be best as an animated series.

Lumberjanes – Did you not expect this to be on the list? A bunch of girls at camp dealing with weird mysteries? Yes please! This feels like it could be The X-Files for the tween set, but I’ve seen the fans at comic conventions, it’s diverse. Forget television, I see big time franchise here.

Suicide Risk – A cop gains super powers, and there’s a whole lot more to it. Police procedurals always seem to do well in television, just stretch that part of the story out for a bit, then there’s a nice shift when your audience might begin to tune out.

The Empty Man – Speaking of police procedurals…. In this case it’s a cult meets disease aspect and the team is an FBI agent and a CDC agent. This also could do well paired with Sleepy Hollow. Take in the fact everyone is freaking out about diseases now, and you’ve tapped into the zeitgeist.

Thomas Alsop – Thomas Alsop fights spirits and protects Manhattan. He’s also a television celebrity. The potential here with some awesome meta/synergy is wide open. If Constantine is a hit on NBC, this is their answer.

The Woods – So this has an entire school being transported to an alien world. Lots of mystery. Lots of creepiness. Can we get this and Lumberjanes paired up for a two hour block? We’re even programming for you!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

D.E. Comic Page Template.epsWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Bob’s Burgers #1 (Dynamite) – The amazing television show comes to comics. Hopefully the humor translates well. The television is an underrated gem, and I expect the comic to be as well. I love the television show, so can’t wait to read this.

Black Science #8 (Image) – Fun action with every issue. I love this series. One of the best new releases this year.

Evil Empire #4 (BOOM! Studios) – Most series show the evil government after they come into power, this is how it gets to that point. With the world spinning around right now, this series feels eerily real.

Genius #4, Genius #5 (Top Cow Productions) – A beyond relevant comic that asks what happens if the world’s greatest tactical mind decided to use that to unify gangs and take on the establishment.

Hero Cats #1 (Action Lab Entertainment) – A  new all-ages series from Action Lab which excels at those releases!

Letter 44 #9 (Oni Press) – An amazing mix of sci-fi and politics. Writer Charles Soule looks at what might really happen if we detected an alien presence in deep space.

POP #1 (Dark Horse) – What if the world’s pop stars and celebrities were literally products, grown by the world’s wealthiest (and most depraved) minds—and one of them escaped? Sounds awesome!

Saga #22 (Image) – One of the best comics out there has shifted its focus a bit in this second part, and it’s still amazing.

Sundowners #1 (Dark Horse) – The new series by Tim Seeley follows a group of heroes where you really question their sanity. I came out of the first issue wondering what was real, and what wasn’t. It has me more than intrigued enough to come back for more.

Wayward #1 (Image) – Jim Zub breaks out of his fantasy niche to follow a young woman’s trip to Japan where she’ll take on various monsters. The first issue is a fun read and the art is fantastic.

Review: Evil Empire #3

Evil_Empire_003_coverWith the presidential election looming close, and Reese even closer to the truth of the corruption at the heart of America, she must struggle to separate her friends from her enemies before it’s too late. Lines are drawn and sides are being taken. And there’s no backing out for Reese now that she has blood on her hands.

Writer Max Bemis has put together an interesting tale with Evil Empire, looking at how a society can slowly be corrupted, using the American political system as his muse. The first two issues to me were fantastic, I work in politics, so to say a series was written for me… well this one seems to be.

In this third issue though, there’s a moment where for me it really clicks, going from political stereotypes and instead diving into a truth about many of the politicians I know, and many who work in politics. To reveal that truth would be a spoiler, and it’s such a moment, I don’t want to ruin it here, but…. here I go, highlight the text in the space below to see what’s revealed.

Many of those, even those that are some of the most vocal, don’t truly believe in what they say. Politics often gets out of hands from us, embraced by fanatics, which is what Sen. Laramy admits happened to him. Many politicians are just mouth pieces, bought and paid for by some higher authority not believing what they say, which is hinted at here. I personally fight what I think are the right battles, and the correct side, but after more than 14 years for me, politics is a job as much as anything else.

How of the above ties to Senator Laramy, his moment, and what happens, is such a “holy shit” moment, and in a weird way felt cathartic for me, and my life experiences. The issue is such a solid build up to those final pages, this is a comic that pays off and it has an honest truth and bluntness to today’s political landscape and politicians.

Bemis’ great story is brought to life with art by Ransom Getty. This is another case of publisher BOOM! Studios matching up a solid writer and story with a fantastic artist, something they’ve excelled at over the years.

If you want to see how a democratic society can devolved into evil, here you go. This is the story before the empire, and it’s fascinating so far.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

bodies #1 coverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Bodies #1 (Vertigo) – A new Vertigo mini-series that follows four detectives over four different time periods. A centuries-spanning murder mystery like nothing you’ve ever seen before, with four sensational artists illustrating a six-page chapter in each issue. Sounds so interesting, sign us up!

Armor Hunters: Harbinger #1 (Valiant) – Valiant has one of the best universes out there, and their current Armor Hunters story has been fun action bringing the various corners together to battle one foe.

Caliban #5 (Avatar Press) – Garth Ennis does creepy sci-fi horror in this underrated and criminally overlooked series.

Chew: Warrior Chicken Poyo (Image Comics) – Have you read any of the previous issues of Chew with Agent Poyo? That alone merits this to make it on the list.

Deep Gravity #1 (Dark Horse) – A new sci-fi series that takes us to a new planet where gravity is greater and teams are rotated in and out over short stints. The first issues is solid setting things up for what looks like an interesting story.

Evil Empire #3 (BOOM! Studios) – It feels like a while since this last issue but Max Bemis’ series that looks at a crumbling America turning towards Libertarian anarchy is too fascinating a concept to not make the list.

Hawkeye #19 (Marvel) – This one has been a long time coming. The rumors say this series is running down, so we’re savoring every issue while we can.

Letter 44 Vol. 1: Escape Velocity (Oni Press) – If you missed the first issues, here’s your chance to catch up. A new President learns about why his predecessor ramped up wars, and the revelation changes his view of the world, his job, and the humanity as a whole. A great mix of science fiction and politics

Transformers: Robots in Disguise #31 (IDW Publishing) – IDW’s entire Transformers line has been fantastic giving us a new spin on the classic characters. The comics are focused on religion, and nation building, but with giant robots.

The Wake #10 (Vertigo) – Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy’s series wraps up! It’s been a hell of a run!

MEMETIC #1 (of 3)

Retail Price: $4.99
Author: James Tynion IV
Artist: Eryk Donovan
Cover Artists: A: Eryk Donovan B: Meme Variant (INCENTIVE)

WHY WE LOVE IT: After launching James Tynion IV’s THE WOODS to much acclaim, we were eager to see what other ideas he had. When James—one of our favorite new voices in comics—pitched us MEMETIC as a tale of the apocalypse in three parts, we were sold!

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: MEMETIC is truly an event comic—three oversized, 48-page issues detailing the end of the world over the course of three days, and a wholly unique take on the disaster genre. Much like his work on THE WOODS, James Tynion IV and fantastic newcomer Eryk Donovan (THE HOUSE IN THE WALL) will bring horror to a whole new generation and fans of J-horror films like UZUMAKI and THE RING.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: A Meme is an idea that starts with an individual, and then spreads throughout multiple persons and potentially entire societies. Richard Dawkins suggests a meme’s success comes from its effectiveness to the host. But history shows that destructive memes can spread just as rapidly through society. MEMETIC shows the progression of a weaponized meme that leads to the utter annihilation of the human race within 72 hours. The root of this apocalypse is a single image on the internet, a “meme” in the popular sense. A meme that changes everything.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: After dying on the battlefield during the Revolutionary War, Ichabod Crane awakes in present-day Sleepy Hollow, New York. His resurrection is tied to the reappearance of the Headless Horseman, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Realizing it is his mission to help stop the end of the world, Ichabod teams with Lt. Abbie Mills to meet each evil threat head-on. When minor miracles start to sweep the town, they’re glad something good seems to be happening for once. No decapitations, no headless horseman, no worries, right? But as one by one the miracles start to backfire, more and more violently, Abbie and Ichabod must find time between saving the world to save the citizens of Sleepy Hollow…

THE WOODS VOL. 1 TP

Retail Price: $9.99
Author: James Tynion IV
Artist: Michael Dialynas
Cover Artist: Michael Dialynas

WHY WE LOVE IT: As fans of James Tynion IV’s work in the Batman universe (Batman Eternal, Red Hood and the Outlaws), we were eager to publish his first original comic series. THE WOODS gives us that same eerie, small-town horror feel we get whenever we read a Stephen King novel.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: James Tynion IV is a former protege of Batman writer Scott Snyder, so you know he’s learned a lot about how to craft a compelling tale. If you’re fan of teen conspiracy comics like Morning Glories, Sheltered, and Revival, you’ll immediately be sucked into THE WOODS.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine. Collects issues #1-4 of the critically acclaimed series.

HELLRAISER: BESTIARY #1 (of 6)

Retail Price: $3.99

Authors: Victor LaValle, Ben Meares, Mark Miller
Artists: Colin Lorimer, Carlos Magno, Conor Nolan
Cover Artists: A: Conor Nolan B: Kim Herbst (Incentive) C: Sam Shearon (Incentive)

WHY WE LOVE IT: Over the past three years, Clive Barker has re-imagined the HELLRAISER mythos as only he could, building a long-form narrative that became one of the best-received horror comics in recent memory. Now, the Master of Horror takes us into his Bestiary for an anthology series free of continuity, but full of shocking consequences.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: HELLRAISER: BESTIARY will pick up where classic horror comics anthologies like Tales From The Crypt, Vault of Horror, and the more recent Flinch left off. And not only will some of comics’ rising stars, such as Ed Brisson (Sheltered), and Michael Moreci (CURSE), get a chance to open the puzzle box in this series, but the first issue features the comics debut of award-winning novelist Victor LaValle (The Devil in Silver, Big Machine).

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Step into the Bestiary for all-new tales of the LeMarchand Device and its guardians! This first issue contains the start of a six-part serial written by Mark Miller (CLIVE BARKER’S NEXT TESTAMENT) and Ben Meares (HELLRAISER ANNUAL 2013), and drawn by Carlos Magno (DEATHMATCH), where a group of mercenaries are hired to steal Pinhead’s pins. Also, superstar author Victor LaValle teams with artist Colin Lorimer (CURSE) to tell a story set on the outskirts of New York City, as a close-knit community is torn apart by the presence of the puzzle box.
