NYCC 2012 – Kill Shakespeare: Live Stage Reading

Fresh off playing to packed and enthusiastic audiences in Tucson and Montreal last month, an abridged version of Kill Shakespeare: The Live Stage Reading– based on the successful IDW Publishing comic book series – makes its American comic convention debut this upcoming Saturday at the New York Comic Con.

The show will run on Saturday, October 13th at 11am on the Variant Stage and will be free for any New York Comic Con attendee. Kill Shakespeare: The Live Stage Reading is a 90-minute interactive stage show that highlights projected images of comic art from the Kill Shakespeare graphic novels and involves actors reading the dialogue as if in a radio drama. This format allows audience members to watch performers improvise music and foley live on-stage. The show also encourages audience participation. The play was originally commissioned by Toronto’s Young Centre for the Performing Arts and performed by the acclaimed Soulpepper Theatre Company in fall, 2011.  Soulpepper Theatre’s Toby Malone has served as dramaturge for the piece.

Adapted by comic creators Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery, Kill Shakespeare: The Live Stage Reading provides viewers with a unique mixture of comic art, radio-play-style drama, music, and audience interaction.

The stage show will be produced in association with New York’s acclaimed Gideon Productions. Artistic director Jordana Williams will direct a special one-hour version of the show and feature some of New York’s top up-and-coming theatrical talent.

New York will mark the fourth stop on Kill Shakespeare’s North American tour having played to full houses in Toronto, Tuscon and Montreal before finishing 2012 in Rochester and capped by an eight show performance in Halifax. In 2013 shows are already booked for Chicago, Toronto and Dubai, with stops at other conventions in the works.

NYCC 2012 – Vivek J. Tiwary To Write & Produce Feature Film Adaptation of the Graphic Novel The Fifth Beatle

Award-winning producer and writer, Vivek J. Tiwary, is set to write and produce a feature film adaptation of his upcoming graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle, which chronicles the life of The Beatles little-known manager, Brian Epstein. As Paul McCartney said, “If anyone was the Fifth Beatle, it was Brian.” This groundbreaking project also marks the first time a feature film about the band has ever secured rights to include Beatles songs.

Tiwary has signed a deal with Sony/ATV (who control the Lennon/McCartney music catalog) which gives him unprecedented access to Beatles songs for the film.

The graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle, is being written by Tiwary and drawn by artist Andrew Robinson with additional contributions by multiple Eisner and Harvey award-winning artist Kyle Baker. It is slated to be published in 2013. Both Robinson and Tiwary will attend the upcoming New York Comic Con from October 10th-14th to present the graphic novel and meet fans. Artwork from the novel will be exclusively displayed online.

On Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm, Tiwary and Robinson will appear on the panel “A Celebration of Pop Music Comics” at Jim Hanley’s Universe store. They will then sign exclusive artwork from THE FIFTH BEATLE at New York Comic Con’s Dark Horse booth at the Javitz Center on Friday, October 12th at 5pm.

The Fifth Beatle from M Press Books, a division of Dark Horse Comics, recounts the untold true story of Epstein, the brilliant visionary who discovered The Beatles and helped guide the band to international stardom as their manager, securing their first record deal at a time when no one else was interested, and successfully bringing them to the world stage with a scale and scope no music impresario had ever attempted.

Epstein’s boast—“The Beatles will be bigger than Elvis!”— seemed absurd in 1961, but proved humbly prophetic by 1967. When he died at the age of 32, he was an extremely successful artist manager and entertainment impresario, but a painfully lonely young man.  The film will deal with Epstein’s struggles with his sexuality and religion, while desperately trying to fit into the “Fab Four’s” world.

NYCC 2012 – Corey Taylor To Pen House of Gold & Bones Comic with Dark Horse!

Grammy-nominated musician and best-selling author Corey Taylor, the lyricist and lead singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour, is setting down the microphone and putting ink and images to paper in his new project with Dark Horse ComicsHouse of Gold & Bones!

With stunning covers from Jason Shawn Alexander, this limited four-issue series marks Corey Taylor’s debut in the comics genre. “I’ve been a die-hard fan of comics, on every level, my entire life,” says Taylor. “This has been a dream of mine for years now, and this project was tailor made for a comic, no pun intended. I couldn’t have picked a better company than Dark Horse to make this a reality. I have loved several of their titles for many years, going back to ’92. If we can get this crazy world out of my head and onto the canvas, it’ll be the best thing I’ve ever attempted. And with Dark Horse, I have every confidence that’s exactly what we’ll do.”

House of Gold & Bones is a unique multimedia experience which includes two Stone Sour albums via Roadrunner Records (release date for Part 1 is October 22, with Part 2 following in 2013), videos, online presence, creative album packaging, live shows, and now the Dark Horse Comics series. Each element will follow and expand on the story. Taylor, already an internationally best-selling author, courtesy of last year’s Seven Deadly Sins, wrote the story—as well as the lyrics for the twenty-three tracks that make up the two albums—as a linear story line. The Stone Sour songs set the tone and follow the action, with Taylor’s House of Gold & Bones comic expanding on the story.

Corey Taylor will be signing in the Dark Horse Booth at New York Comic Con Saturday, October 12 at 3 p.m.

Stone Sour’s House of Gold & Bones Part 1 album is on sale October 22, 2012!

House of Gold & Bones issue #1 is on sale April 17, 2013!
