Delisle Wins The Gold Medal at Angouleme; Jerusalem in stores in April

JERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY IN STORES THIS APRIL—60,000 SOLD IN FRANCE IN TWO MONTHS

This past Sunday at the International Comics Festival in Angoulême, France, Drawn & Quarterly cartoonist Guy Delisle walked away with the world’s most prestigious award for the comic book medium, the festival’s Fauve d’Or for best graphic album for CHRONIQUES DE JÉRUSALEM, beating out 60 other titles. JERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY will be published in English and in stores this April. Delisle will be on a ten-city tour for the first time in North America, dates and venues to come. Guy Delisle expertly lays the groundwork for a cultural road map of contemporary Jerusalem, utilizing the classic stranger in a strange land point of view that made his other books, PYONGYANG, SHENZHEN, and BURMA CHRONICLES required reading for understanding what daily life is like in cities few are able to travel to. In JERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY, Delisle explores the complexities of a city that represents so much to so many. D+Q ANNOUNCES DIGITAL STRATEGY CHESTER BROWN’S PAYING FOR IT & LOUIS RIEL AVAILABLE ON THE KOBO VOX

As announced in today’s PW Daily by Calvin Reid, this holiday season, the Drawn & Quarterly classic graphic novels LOUIS RIEL A COMIC-STRIP BIOGRAPHY and PAYING FOR IT A COMIC-STRIP BIOGRAPHY ABOUT BEING A JOHN by the award-winning and iconoclastic cartoonist Chester Brown, will each be available as ebooks via KOBO’s Vox Reader, it was announced today by Peggy Burns, Associate Publisher of Marketing & Sales. Known for its astute editorial standards and high print production values, this venture marks the Montreal-based company’s first foray into the digital sphere.

“Many people assumed we would never do ebooks, whereas the opposite was true. We were open to the idea, but wanted to approach it cautiously,” said Burns. “This past Fall, we had a fortuitous series of events that brought the project to the foreground. Chester voiced his desire for ebooks, CBC Canada Reads shortlisted LOUIS RIEL in its top-ten for its annual contest, and most importantly, the fellow Canadian company Kobo inquired if we would consider ebooks. Kobo’s pitch was very friendly and nonexclusive and they promote CBC Canada Reads. They understood who we are, our hesitancy and what is important to us. It all happened very organically which is how we prefer to do business.”

D+Q production manager Tracy Hurren oversaw the project and worked with Kobo to ensure that the same care and attention D+Q gives towards its print editions was in place for the ebooks. The arrangement is nonexclusive and D+Q expects to add more titles by different authors and devices throughout 2012.

Lastly, D+Q is proud to announce that the company will be splitting the net proceeds of its ebook sales equally with its authors, and is in agreement with the Writer’s Union of Canada.

“D+Q has always been an author-centric company, it is this ethos that has shaped us into who we are today,” said Chris Oliveros, D&Q’s Publisher and Editor-In-Chief. “It only seemed natural to offer the fairest proposition to our authors.”

On Sunday, September 18th, Kate attended the Brooklyn Book Fair, where she signed and quickly sold through 100 books in two hours. This past week it was announced by the Borough President of Brooklyn, Marty Markowitz, that Kate had won the AT&T Fan Festival Prize. The prize included a $3500 donation to the literacy nonprofit of her choice, Kate donated the money to 826NYC. On Tuesday, September 27th, the official release date of HARK! A VAGRANT, after accepting her award and doing stock signings around Manhattan & Brooklyn, Kate launched her book at Housing Works, with Desert Island. With over 200 people in attendance, she sold close to 200 books.

Small Press Expo Announces the Ignatz Award Nominees for SPX 2011

Bethesda, Maryland; August 18, 2011 – The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels and alternative political cartoons, is pleased to announce nominees for the fifteenth annual presentation of the Ignatz Awards, a celebration of outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning.

The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse from his long running comic strip Krazy Kat, recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz Awards are a festival prize, the first of such in the United States comic book industry.

The nominees for the ballot were determined by a panel of five of the best of today’s comic artists, Rina Ayuyang, Mike Dawson, Kris Dresen, Theo Ellsworth, and John Porcellino, with the votes cast for the awards by the attendees during SPX. The Ignatz Awards will be presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 9:00 PM.

While this may appear overtly sensational and just plain implausible to some, Brown’s story stands for itself. PAYING FOR IT offers an entirely contemporary exploration of sex work from the timid john who rides his bike to his escorts, wonders how to tip so as not to offend, and reads Dan Savage for advice, to the modern day transactions complete with online reviews, seemingly willing participants, and clean apartments devoid of cliché depictions of street corners, drugs, or pimps. SIGNED & NUMBERED OZU PRINTS ON SALE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27TH AT 12 PM EST

In response to the devastating Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Drawn & Quarterly and Adrian Tomine have teamed up to raise funds for relief and recovery in Japan. We are offering a set of exclusive prints featuring two of Tomine’s most elegant and evocative images, signed and numbered by the artist. Originally created as cover illustrations for the DVD release of the Yasujiro Ozu films The Only Son and There Was a Father, they are used here with the kind permission of the Criterion Collection and Shochiku Co. Ltd. These prints are not available anywhere else, and will be strictly limited to an edition of 50.

In addition to the two prints, all orders will include a small original sketch by Adrian Tomine, personalized to the name of the purchaser.

100% of proceeds will be donated to the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

WonderCon is well underway and I’ll be at synDCon today (and maybe tomorrow if it’s good). Expect some coverage of the show and my thoughts.
