DC Collectibles Expands to Walmart

DC Collectibles is bringing its acclaimed Batman: Black and White statue line to Walmart stores as 4″ mini-figures. The new figures are direct transformations of the company’s acclaimed 9″-scale figures and feature designs from many world-renowned artists including Jim Lee, Bruce Timm, Amanda Conner, Darwyn Cooke and many more.

Batman: Black and White is DC Collectibles’ longest-running statue line and one of their best-sellers.

But, there’s a twist…

The 4″ line of figures will be packaged in individual blind bags stocked next to DC Comic Giants. Each month a new wave of six figures will be released widening the selection and upping the surprise factor.

The first waves of DC Collectibles Batman: Black and White 4″ figures heading to Walmart stores include:

If you think all of the pre-Toy Fair 2019 announcements by DC Collectibles was enough, the company had even more to show off! At least four new action figures in the Batman: The Animated Series style were revealed.

We’ll be getting a Red Hood, Azrael/Batman, Batman in Armor from The Dark Knight Returns, and Deathstroke.

Toy Fair 2019: DC Collectibles Shows New Statues, Figures, and Props

Toy Fair 2019 kicks off this weekend and DC Collectibles has revealed so much including Lucha Libre superhero figures, DC Prime, and DC Engines of Chaos. On top of these new lines there’s even more statues, figures and props.

Additional collectibles debuting in 2019 include a life-size Wonder Woman shield prop measuring 22“ in diameter and crafted from fiberglass and polyresin, and new statues starring Batman, Harley Quinn, Red Hood and the Huntress, among others, designed by acclaimed comic book artists Greg Capullo, Greg Horn, Frank Miller, Joëlle Jones and more.

Toy Fair 2019: DC Collectibles Announces Riley Rossmo’s DC Engines of Chaos

With Toy Fair around the corner, DC Collectibles is revealing some of what we’ll be getting in the coming months! DC Engines of Chaos is a new statue line based on designs by renowned DC artist Riley Rossmo. Each statue is a high-RPM transformation of a beloved DC character uniquely adapted for a gritty, dystopian world. Some figures are adapted to battle, others to survival. This new line will race into stores in November 2019 with its first statue featuring the Dark Knight riding atop a custom bike, complete with armored wheels, a Bat-shaped grille and a Joker-bot.

Toy Fair 2019: DC Collectibles Announces DC Prime, a New 9″ Figure Line by Riccardo Federici and Wonil Song

With Toy Fair around the corner, DC Collectibles is revealing what will be at the show including entire new toy lines. DC Prime is a new premium-grade 9″action figure line brought to life by popular artist Riccardo Federici and celebrated sculptor Wonil Song. Each highly detailed figure features unmatched poseability and numerous custom accessories.

Batman is the first character to debut in October 2019 and includes multiple pairs of hands, a wired fabric cape and three unique heads.

Toy Fair 2019: It’s Super Heroes Meets Lucha Libre with a New DC Collectibles Line

Lucha Libre is big business and the wrestling style has been having a resurgence in US. DC Collectibles has revealed a new line, DC ¡Lucha Explosiva!, is a 7″ line of action figures that mixes wrestling with super heroes.

The first wave of figures include Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cheetah, Metallo II, and Deathstroke. They come to comic and specialty shops in August 2019.

DC Sees Layoffs During Restructure

DC was hit with layoffs yesterday due to a restructuring that will have the comics publisher back to focusing on the “business of publishing.” Seven employees of the 240 person workforce were let go.

Three Senior VPs were let go. Senior VP Sales Trade Marketing John Cunningham, VP Consumer Marketing Eddie Scannell, and Senior VP Art Director Mark Chiarello were some that were fired. The industry reacted negatively to the news so much so that “Mark Chiarello” was trending on Twitter.

The company is now organized into three distinct areas:

  • Editorial – overseen by editor-in-chief Bob Harras
  • Production & Manufacturing – under Senior VP Manufacturing and Operations Alison Gill
  • Publishing Support Services (new) – this will handle sales, marketing, and promotion and handled by Senior VP Publishing Strategy & Support Services Hank Kanalz

DC Collectibles is being moved under Warner Bros. Consumer Products’ Toy team.

This change at DC comes as Warner Bros. Consumer Products will see 10 percent of the staff laid off.

This is the latest in a year of changes at DC including Diane Nelson stepping down as President of DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products in June and Geoff Johns exiting as DC President and Chief Creative Officer for a writing and producing deal. Changes in structure for the company have been expected since last year’s acquisition of Time Warner, DC’s parent company, by AT&T.

A memo for employees has made its way online which you can read below.

Today has been a challenging day. We have made organizational changes across DC that we believe will help to strengthen and evolve the division for future success. With these changes come difficult decisions which we take very seriously.

We recognize and appreciate that all of our employees have made considerable contributions to our business and that it is difficult to lose colleagues, many of whom have been here for a long time and have made an important impact on DC. We thank them for their hard work and dedication to DC. As always, we are committed to taking care of our employees and will be as thoughtful as possible with those who are impacted by these changes.

Together with Dan and Jim, and the executive team, we have spent time assessing DC’s business, as well as the comic book publishing landscape. DC is going back to its roots of delivering epic stories with our world-class characters, stories and brands. Being a premier house of storytelling will never go out of style and we intend to ultimately super-serve our existing fans, while providing new compelling content that engages and excites even more fans around the globe. Rest assured, the direct market will remain at the heart of our business – and will continue to be one of our greatest strengths.

The new streamlined structure is focused on creating, delivering and supporting a robust publishing operation that will allow DC to be nimble, navigate an industry in change, and thrive. As we communicated today, we are forming three distinct work streams – Editorial, Production & Manufacturing and Publishing Support Services.

•  Editorial will continue to be run by Bob Harras, SVP & Editor-In-Chief, who will now also be responsible for new initiatives and global publishing, editorial scheduling, and art direction

•  Production & Manufacturing will continue to be run by Alison Gill, SVP Manufacturing & Operations

•  Publishing Support Services is a new business unit consisting of all departments that support the sales, marketing and promotion of our books, and this will be run by Hank Kanalz who is taking on additional responsibilities as SVP Publishing Strategy & Support Services As a result – DC Collectibles and its team will be part of the Consumer Products Toy team moving forward.

We recognize there are other groups across DC who are not fully dedicated to supporting the publishing business and, therefore, are not directly addressed in today’s news. As The Global Brands & Experiences structure continues to develop, I look forward to sharing more with you as that evolves.

Many of you will have questions and in the coming days you will receive more information from Bob, Alison and Hank about their teams. Together with Dan and Jim, I will be hosting Town Hall meetings Thursday on the individual floors to discuss these changes and provide more insight.

DesignerCon 2018: James Groman Brings His Twisted Art Style to DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains

Hours before the DesignerCon 2018 show floor opened, superstar designer toy artist James Groman revealed via Instagram his monstrous reimaginings of Batman and his Rogues Gallery for his upcoming DC Artists Alley designer vinyl collaboration with DC Collectibles.

Groman is best known for his outlandish designs as seen in many of his works including the highly popular Madballs toy series. Groman now brings his signature art style to the DC universe and offers his terrifying spin on Batman, Killer Croc, The Joker, and Two-Face as 7”-scale designer vinyl figures. The figures are designed and sculpted by the artist and have been on display at this weekend’s DesignerCon convention in Anaheim, CA, at the DC Collectibles booth #1500.

Groman’s DC Artists Alley designer vinyls will hit stores in October 2019 and are available to preorder now. DesignerCon attendees at this weekend’s convention can take home a custom art print and enamel pin designed by Groman.

The figures are designed and sculpted by Groman and 7″ scale. Retailing for $65 each, they’re limited to 3,000 pieces and out October 2019.
