Matthew Arnold returns to Comixology Originals with the new original graphic novel OUTER LANDS featuring art by Davide Gianfelice and a cover by Jock

Announced earlier this year, timed to WonderCon, television and film writer Matthew Arnold returns to Comixology Originals with the new sci-fi original graphic novel, Outer Lands, which debuts digitally from Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line on August 26, 2025.

“Outer Lands is an action-packed, twisting tale with big surprises which, at its heart, is really about the dangers of technology and our longing for the nostalgic past,” says writer Matt Arnold.

What begins as a historical epic unexpectedly turns into a post-apocalyptic thriller. When a young prince living in a seemingly Ancient Grecian world is exiled to a prison isle to keep him from assuming the throne, he unintentionally discovers a massive global conspiracy in this science-fiction fantasy mash-up.

Outer Lands is written by television and film writer Matthew Arnold, whose work includes NBC’s Siberia, NBC’s Emerald City, and the film Shadow People. Arnold is also the writer of the sci-fi original graphic novel Eden, which is available digitally from Comixology Originals and in print from Dark Horse. Outer Lands features art by Davide Gianfelice, who is best known for his work on Northlanders, and a cover by artist Jock, whose comics work includes Batman, Wytches, The Losers as well as concept art for films including Dredd, Ex Machina and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“What would happen if a hoplite from ancient Greece wielded a modern assault rifle? Together with Matt Arnold, I had an incredible time bringing this bold concept to life crafting an action-packed story where ancient history collides with modern warfare in the most thrilling way,” says artist Davide Gianfelice.

Outer Lands is a riveting and timely story that delves into our worries about AI and a resurgent fear of global nuclear war, while contrasting that against our romantic notions of an idyllic past. But not everything is as it seems in this epic and surprising tale, which explores both our deepest fears and our greatest fantasies, while ultimately providing a crucial warning for the future.

The year is 2112, and it’s the apocalypse exactly as expected: rivers receding, oceans rising, civilization crumbling. Humanity has given up hope, except for a group of Indigenous outcasts who have discovered a time travel portal in a cave in the desert and figured out where everything took a turn for the worst: America. Convinced that the only way to save the world is to rewrite its past, they send one of their own-a reluctant linguist named Tad-on a bloody, one-way mission to 1492 to kill Christopher Columbus before he reaches the so-called New World. But there are steep costs to disrupting the timeline, and taking down an icon isn’t an easy task for an academic with no tactical training and only a wavering moral compass to guide him. As the horror of the task ahead unfolds and Tad’s commitment is tested, his actions could trigger a devastating new fate for his friends and the future.

And where-when-will the desperate time travelers go when their efforts in 1492 backfire?

It’s time to stop thinking and start cutting throats. Christopher Columbus’ ships are weeks closer to landfall, and Tad has nothing to show for it. Battered and bruised after a string of slick but failed attempts to stop the mission’s progress, Tad is ready to admit that history will never change if he doesn’t spill blood and he’s too pissed off to care about collateral damage anymore. But even if he succeeds, his friends in 2112 look doomed as Emily fights for her life at the cave and Sosh confronts Yellow Kid about the unforgivable origins of their plan to save the world.
