NYCC 2022: Crunchyroll announces 3 anime releases and more!

At the Crunchyroll Industry panel at New York Comic Con, Crunchyroll made a series of announcements across streaming, eCommerce, and Crunchyroll Games.

NYCC 2022: Crunchyroll heads to NYCC with the US premiere of Chainsaw Man and more!

With a supercharged offering of new and returning series premiering this Fall, Crunchyroll is headed to New York Comic Con at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from October 6-9, 2022. Attendees will be immersed in the hottest anime this fall with installations, exciting panels, and exclusive premiere screenings.

NYCC badge holders will have the chance to be the first to see the US premiere of Chainsaw Man, one of the most highly anticipated anime series of the year that follows the journey of Denji as he becomes “Chainsaw Man” – a man with a devil’s heart. Crunchyroll will screen the world premiere of the English dub of the series, even before the subtitled episode premieres on Crunchyroll, alongside a Q&A with the English dub cast. 

Additionally, Crunchyroll will be hosting panels for the smash-hit superhero series My Hero Academia with the English voice of Deku, Justin Briner as a guest among others joining him, as well as for the highly anticipated One Piece Film Red, the next theatrical adventure from the long-running series, coming to North American cinemas on November 4.

On the show floor, attendees can enjoy two unique Crunchyroll booths. The first booth (#1557), themed “Movies in the City,” will exhibit a Tokyo skyline in addition to a photo opp designed to be a replica of the Forger family’s apartment from the breakout new anime series SPY x FAMILY. The second booth (#1545) will host two photo opps for One Piece and Chainsaw Man where main characters Denji, Makima, Aki, Power, and Pochita will be gathered next to a unique chainsaw sculpture art installation. Epic My Hero Academia character monuments depicting fan favorite moments will also be displayed throughout the weekend in various locations.

Kodansha Adds 8 New Series to Crunchyroll Manga

Kodansha Comics has added 8 new series to the Crunchyroll Manga simulpub streaming platform, bringing the leading manga publisher’s total on the service to 18. Subscribers to Crunchyroll can now read the latest chapters at the same time they’re published in Japan from even more Kodansha Comics manga series than ever before.

New additions  available for the first time on Crunchyroll Manga include A Silent Voicecreator Yoshotoki Oima’s follow-up to her smash hit, To Your Eternity, and Netflix OriginalKnights of Sidonia creator Tsutomu Nihei’s latest, APOSIMZ.

Crunchyroll subscribers will be able to read the latest chapters of every series as part of their Crunchyroll subscription, including chapters the same day they are first published in Japan (“simulpubs”). Recent chapters that have not yet been collected into graphic-novel format are also included for all subscribers. A comprehensive list of series on the platform, and the frequency of how often new chapters come out, is provided below.

Kodansha Comics will continue adding new series to Crunchyroll Manga in the coming months—more announcements to come. The following series will have new chapters released every week:

Anime NYC to return to New York on November 16-18, 2018

Tickets for Anime NYC 2018 Powered By Crunchyroll, New York’s Japanese pop culture and anime convention, are now on sale for the con’s return on November 16-18, 2018 after the inaugural celebration welcomed over 20,000 fans to New York’s Javits Center this past November. 2018 tickets are available and range from $40-50 for single day passes, full Weekend passes for $65, and Mega passes enabling exclusive opportunities, early access, and more for $295.

Anime NYC 2018 will build on the exciting programming, special guests, and more that attendees of the inaugural show enjoyed, with plans for next year’s convention to take over additional halls in the Javits Center to bring together even more fans – looking to double 2017’s 250,000+ square feet. This year, fans took part in events including the Fullmetal Alchemist live–action film’s US premiere, Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower concert and premiere, Anime Diva Night powered by Anisong World Matsuri, and the NYC Ramen Summit, celebrating with 200 publishers and exhibitors from across the Japanese pop culture space including Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Bandai Namco, Bandai Visual, Bluefin, Kinokuniya, Kodansha, Sentai Filmworks, SUNRISE, Vertical, VIZ Media, and Yen Press. Plans are already in the works for even more in 2018.

Fans attending the inaugural Anime NYC hailed from all five of New York’s boroughs and 38 different states. International fans flew in from 10 countries including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Spain, and Japan to come together around their favorite fandoms.

Anime NYC brings celebration of Japanese culture & anime to Javits Center – 11/17-19

LeftField Media will present a massive three-day celebration of Japanese animation and culture this fall at the inaugural Anime NYC convention powered by Crunchyroll, coming to New York City’s Javits Center (655 W 34th St) from Friday, November 17 through Sunday, November 19. Attendees will be able to view exclusive anime screenings and meet major guests courtesy of international animation and manga publishers like Aniplex, Bandai Visual, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Sentai Filmworks, Sunrise, Yen Press, and VIZ Media; play the latest in Japanese gaming technology; chow down on Japanese delicacies and fusion cuisine; rock out to musical guests direct from Tokyo; and more. Tickets are available with general admission tickets priced from $35-60, and with VIP tickets priced at $275 guaranteeing access to premiere programming and special guests.

LeftField Media looks to fill a void with Anime NYC. While most major cities in America play host to anime-specific conventions, New York City – America’s largest city – has no large, dedicated celebration of Japanese animation and culture. Anime NYC powered by Crunchyroll has been in planning for over a year with tremendous support from partners in both America and Japan, and anticipates bringing together almost 20,000 fans at its inaugural convention. LeSean Thomas Children of Ether Comes to Crunchyroll

Children of Ether, Crunchyroll’s first ever original short, written and directed by LeSean Thomas (Boondocks, Cannon Busters) dropped on the Crunchyroll site exclusively for subscribers. Children of Ether follows Rhonda, a woman with mysterious powers and a supernatural connection who is in search of her past while trying to stay alive in a dystopian future run by rival gangs, warring factions, and magical unknown elements.

First announced at New York Comic Con 2016, Thomas teamed up with several anime heavy hitters such as character designer Hiroshi Shimizu (Michiko and Hatchin), storyboard director Shingo Natsume (One Punch Man), animation director Yûichi Takahashi (Gatchaman Crowds Insight) and animator Mitsuo Iso (Neon Genesis Evangelion) to produce Children of Ether. The animated short along with exclusive behind-the-scenes creation footage will screen before the first full-length episode of The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Written by Aya Takaha (Psycho Pass) and directed by Nohiro Naganuma (Yowamushi Pedal, Death Note).

What I think makes Thomas’ Children of Ether so significant is that not only is he an African-American artist and director who worked exclusively with a Japanese team to create Children of Ether, the main character, Rhonda, is also woman of color, a rare image in the world of anime. In addition, Children of Ether could be considered Thomas’ official anime directorial debut. Although in 2015 Thomas successfully funded a Kickstarter for the pilot of another series, Cannon Busters, and created a trailer for the series, only backers have been given access to the pilot for the show and at the time of this writing, the animated pilot has not been announced yet as a full series.lesean thomas, children of ether, crunchyroll, anime, theblerdgurl
