In 2002, Michael left Top Cow Productions to start Aspen MLT LLC., and create the hit indie title Soulfire, in addition to continuing Fathom. Turner would go on to become one of the most recognizable cover artists for Marvel Comics. Michael Turner died in 2008, at the age of 37, from complications from treatment for bone cancer.

Crowdfunding Corner: Clover Press kickstarts Craig Yoe’s Woman & Man+

Backer Beware: Crowdfunding projects are not guaranteed to be delivered and/or delivered when promised. We always recommend to do your research before backing.

Craig Yoe is teaming up with Clover Press for his next project as a cartoonist: the first-ever publication of Woman & Man+a wildly surreal autobiographical comic which is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. The graphic novel depicts the artist losing his love, his home country, and (some say) his sanity—and tells the story of his struggle to reinvent himself. The project is now live on Kickstarter.

Craig Yoe’s debut comic Sammy Saved and Al Most, published in the 1970’s, featured a cover colored by Yoe’s pal, Zap Comix’s Rick Griffin. Sammy Saved and Al Most was a spiritually infused contribution to the underground comix movement, one which garnered the young cartoonist some attention. But Yoe’s passion for drawing comics was sidetracked for over a half a century by his career as a creative director for Jim Henson and the Muppets, Disney, Nickelodeon, and MTV and producing books about comics history  with the award-winning Yoe Books.

Yoe’s passionate cult of fans have called his visual diary/underground comix “bizarre,” “beautiful,” “transgressive,” “‘like nothing else,” “subversive,” “beyond weird” and “degenerate—in a good way!” Now, more than fifty years after Sammy Saved and Al Most was found at hippy headshops, Yoe’s eagerly awaited second comic Woman & Man+ dives deep into sex, horror, and drama, with a hint of humor and a whiff of hope.

Woman & Man+ runs until Friday, April 5 at 4:00 AM UTC.

Crowdfunding Corner Exclusive: Writer Sarah Byam discusses the behind-the-scenes process of her collaboration with Tim Sale for BILLI 99

BILLI 99

Tim Sale was one of the most celebrated and beloved comic book artists of his generation. Frequently collaborating with writer Jeph Loeb, Tim illustrated seminal stories featuring Batman, Catwoman, Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Daredevil as well as the cult favorite TV series Heroes. Clover Press is publishing the first-ever hardcover edition of Sale’s first full-length comic book work, the Eisner Award-nominated BILLI 99, written by Sarah Byam. This new edition, which is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, features glorious colors by the award-winning and fan-favorite color artist José Villarrubia.

We have exclusive commentary about the behind-the-scenes process of her collaboration from Sarah Byam about her collaboration with Sale.

Our Mothers Were Heroes

My earliest memory took place in the middle of the 1967 Detroit summer riots. It was twilight, smoke, and fire rising across the streets ahead. A dozen or so boys were beating another boy they had captured. My mother, all 5 feet, 98 pounds of her, locked us in the car and charged into the fight. Using only her voice, she called the teens to their senses.

“Stop it! Your mothers’ would be ashamed of you!”

They stopped.

They dropped their sticks, like wakened from a nightmare, and left one by one.

I wanted to be just like her.

Tim’s mother was a different kind of hero. First, she worked as a civil rights activist, and then as an active member of the National Organization for Women, she worked on the campaign to ratify the national Equal Rights Amendment. She taught her son feminist values and gave him feminist literature to read. Having a mother who was a radical feminist, Tim’s early life brought him to a place where he could understand and have compassion for a journey like mine.

Getting Started

Tim and I were able to develop Billi 99 from almost opposite experiences, which I think made the combination of our knowledge and skill come together so well in Billi 99. I think it was pivotal in both of our careers in different ways and for different reasons.

I was fortunate enough to meet his parents and share a meal with them as both Tim and I lived in Seattle while we were creating Billi 99.

Tim’s father, Roger Sale, was a professor of literature at the University of Washington. Roger Sale not only gave his son literature but also gave him heroes like Zorro and Robin Hood. Tim began to draw adventure stories, and his reading improved.  By the time he was 13, his love for comics was solidified. He was encouraged to draw, and taken to meet his heroes. He studied his storytelling art before junior high school and continued. After a taste of creation, he dedicated and focused himself throughout the rest of his life, developing a signature style of painting in black, and white, with hundreds of shades of handmade greys in between.

Influences

About the same time, I began writing in earnest. I was very drawn to non-fiction. I read my way through the censored school library and then undertook periodicals. I read multiple newspapers a day. I studied writing at Northern Michigan University until the merit scholarships dried up, continued to practice, and returned to Detroit in 1985 to study at the Wayne State Center for Creative Studies. There I was introduced to urban women writers and poets. People like Alice Walker and Maya Angelou. Not long after I discovered James Baldwin and Studs Terkel. Stories and poetry began to pile up in my old “hope punk” steamship trunk.

Tim went on to study art at the University of Washington in Seattle, and the School of Visual Arts in New York, as well as workshops with greats like John Buscema, John Romita Sr, and Marie Severin. In 1983, Tim landed a job inking Myth Adventures from WaRP graphics, and then in 1985, he was penciling Thieves World.

Crowdfunding Corner: Béla Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape provides the definitive portrait of a cultural icon

Backer Beware: Crowdfunding projects are not guaranteed to be delivered and/or delivered when promised. We always recommend to do your research before backing.

Béla Lugosi was more than just an actor; he was a cultural icon and a legend of the silver screen whose commanding presence, hypnotic voice, and mesmerizing gaze made him the embodiment of Count Dracula. Now acclaimed journalist and Lugosi expert Robert Cremer has written Béla Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape, a comprehensive and essential biography that features over 700 photographs, including many rare or never-before-seen family photos, letters, documents and historical artifacts curated by Lynne Lugosi Sparks of the Lugosi Family Archives, many of which have never before been published. The book, which is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter by Clover Press, also features an all-new foreword by Béla Lugosi, Jr. and an afterword by noted Lugosi historian Dr. Gary Rhodes.

Béla Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape includes exclusive interviews conducted with Lillian Lugosi Donlevy, Lugosi’s wife of 20 years, as well as his closest Hungarian relatives and friends. The biography explores the actor’s humble beginnings in Hungary; his political activism, which cost him his wife, family and almost his life; his harrowing transatlantic crossing to America; and his struggles to realize his dream of becoming a success on stage and on the silver screen. The book also provides compelling insight into the reasons for Béla’s decline into B-movie productions in Gower Gulch in the 1950s, with extensive interviews with Edward D. Wood, Jr. which unlock heretofore unknown background on Béla’s involvement in the filming of the cult classics Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster and Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Béla Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape provides unprecedented look into many aspects of Lugosi’s life, including:

  • Why Béla enlisted in the army in 1914, when he could have been excused from military service.
  • How Béla became a major union organizer in 1918 that catapulted him to fame and then to exile from his beloved Hungary.
  • How a sailor and his cat saved Béla’s life during his transatlantic crossing to the U.S.
  • Why Béla was not the first choice for the role of Count Dracula.
  • Why Béla risked involvement in the founding of the Screen Actors Guild in Hollywood, given his near-fatal experience with union activism in Hungary.
  • Who was really behind the ban on horror films in 1936.
  • Why Béla’s film The Raven was a personal nightmare for the actor, despite being a box office hit.
  • Why Béla risked his health repeatedly on cross-country barnstorming tours.
  • What role fishhead stew played in Béla’s embarking on a second career with filmmaker Ed Wood.
  • Why Béla asked his son not to drive him to his wedding ceremony with Hope Lininger.

Perfect for film buffs, horror aficionados and readers with a taste for the macabre, Béla Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape is now on Kickstarter. The campaign runs until Thursday, November 16 2023 11:59 PM EST.
