Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special Teases What Comes Next

Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special

In the wake of the We Are Yesterday crossover epic, a mysterious Quantum Quorum has emerged…stalked by a lethal enemy that takes no prisoners. The League deputizes a rag tag group of time displaced heroes like Batman Beyond, Gold Beetle, and Helena Wayne to fill the void left behind by the Time Masters and save the quorum from the mysterious threat that’s picking off time-travelers one by one. These Legends of Tomorrow are the only ones standing in the way of this cascading chronal Armageddon with the past, present, and future teetering on the brink. Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special is a one-shot that bridges the recent time adventure and helps set up what’s next to come.

Written by Marc Guggenheim and Mark Waid, Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special is a one-shot “bridge” issue wrapping up the previous storyline, “We Are Yesterday,” and teasing what’s to come in Justice League Unlimited, DC K.O., and Superman. It continues the drama of time displaced heroes and just generally DC’s time travelers being hunted by unknown forces with some connection to Darkseid, who we’re warned is coming. Last we saw the character kicked off All-In, the latest thread of stories connecting the DC Universe. Last we saw the character, he was killed after bonding with Spectre and apparently kicking off the “Absolute Universe.” With DC K.O. apparently having to do with the character, and this one-shot, the rumor of his demise was greatly exaggerated.

Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special is a decent set-up for what’s to come, catching readers up on the previous storyline and the ramifications. A new team of time displaced character band together, led by the mysterious Legend, to save characters displaced in time and stop whatever is going on. The who, why, and what, isn’t quite clear other than it’s all part of some greater story. But still, it’s rather satisfying and overall works, even for those who might not have read what has come before. What really stands out in the comic is its ability to dance around the mystery of quite a few different characters and it not get frustrating.

Featuring art by Cian Tormey, color by Romulo Fajardo Jr., and lettering by Dave Sharpe, the comic looks good. It has a nice mix of characters throughout time and even genre, but it all comes together in an action-packed look. There’s some solid action and even the quieter moments have something to them. With futuristic characters like Batman Beyond and those of the past like Jonah Hex, and mysterious characters like Legend, it feels like a comic that emphasizes that DC’s wide range of characters can come together for adventure without blinking an eye or seeming out of place.

Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special is a decent one-shot that is an entry point for new readers but also more than enough to get long term readers excited. It folds in fun concepts of DC’s past like the television series Legends of Tomorrow, working it into the current storyline. It’s one to pick up if you’re invested in DC’s meta story or you want to dip your toes in to see what’s going on.
