Batman and Robin: Year One #1

While Bruce Wayne adjusts to the realities of adopting orphan Dick Grayson, a mysterious new crime boss called the General has come to Gotham to claim the city by disrupting and destroying its other mobs. But what is his connection to Two-Face? Batman and his new sidekick, Robin, are out for answers, but it’ll take everything they have to navigate both sides of their relationship as father and son and dynamic duo, with Dick Grayson’s present and future hanging in the balance! Batman and Robin: Year One #1 kicks off the re-teaming of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee and delivers a debut that meets, and exceeds, expectations.

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee have delivered some banger comics in the past. When the duo come together for a new comic, you expect them to again to deliver a hell of an entertaining comic. One that not only has a fantastic story but also amazing art. Batman and Robin: Year One #1 is all that and more. It delivers a start that feels like a modern classic and hearkens back to some amazing comics.

Taking us to the early days of of Dick and Bruce as well as Batman and Robin, Batman and Robin: Year One #1 introduces a man and hero struggling with being a father and mentor and a child who is hurting but hides it with an enthusiastic exterior. Waid and Samnee nail the start of a shaky and inexperienced duo. Both individuals are trying to figure out where things stand and where to take things.

The debut not just delivers an emotional punch and ride but also delivers some fantastic action. Tas the duo head out on an adventure that teases the threat to come. The first battle, Two-Face who has stolen a file from Commissioner Gordon. But he’s done so in a way that breaks his standard operation. That just creates more questions. That’s the tip of the iceberg as a greater threat is hinted at, a new crime boss is coming.

Samnee’s art is amazing. With color by Matheus Lopes and lettering by Clayton Cowles and Samnee, the art is amazing. It’s not only classic Samnee but also feels like classic Batman like The Long Halloween. Where the art stands out is its ability to deliver a gloomy setting but also the cheery disposition of Robin. There’s a light in the art and it’s Robin in every scene.

Batman and Robin: Year One #1 is a hell of a start that nails things in every way. The story has a great focus on the tepid relationship between Bruce and Dick and Batman and Robin and the art creates an atmosphere that feels like the best of Batman. It’s a hell of a start and one that’ll be a modern classic that readers go to for years to come.

DC announces Two-Face by Christian Ward and Fábio Veras for All-In

DC has announced Two-Face, a new limited comic book series by Christian Ward and Fábio Veras. It’s the first series for Gotham City’s notorious Super-Villain (and sometimes good guy) Harvey Dent. In the tradition of recently completed and villain-focused comic book series The Penguin, DC’s new “All In” series Two-Face explores the good and bad sides of Harvey Dent as two characters operating and living in the same body. As the good Harvey explores a Perry Mason-like life as an attorney-at-law, bad Harvey doesn’t just want partial control of the body, but full control of the mind!

After years of internal conflict, both halves of Harvey Dent have reached an uneasy peace. In DC’s new Two-Face series, Harvey uses his skills as an attorney to resolve the conflicts of Gotham’s weirdest and most dangerous criminals, starting with Victor Zsasz. When Zsasz is accused of murdering a fellow member of Gotham’s underworld contingent, who better to prove a criminal’s innocence than someone who’s been on both sides of the law?

Two-Face #1, written by Christian Ward, art by Fábio Veras, colors by Ivan Plascencia and lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, will publish on December 4 with a main cover by Baldemar Rivas and variant covers by Ward, Chris Samnee, and Leonardo Romero.

Dark Horse Comics presents Welcome to the Maynard, a new fantasy mystery series from Eisner Award-winner James Robinson and Eisner Award-winner J. Bone. Penned by Robinson, illustrated by Bone, colored by Ian Herring, and lettered by Jim Campbell, the first issue in this enchanting series featuring magic, mystery, spells, sorcery, and first-class hotel room service arrives November 2024. Issue #1 will be available with cover art by J.Bone and a variant cover by Chris Samnee.

“Welcome to the Maynard!”

The Maynard is a hotel unlike any other, a place where every guest and staff member has magic in their veins. It’s a hotel for magicians, witches, and otherworldly beings. It’s also where Phillipa (Pip) Dale begins her first day as the hotel’s new bellhop (and trainee house detective). She’s immediately sent on the hunt for a magical hotel thief whose daring thefts are part of a much bigger mystery, one that could turn deadly at any moment. And that’s just one of the many challenges and perils Pip must face in her new job in the magical Maynard Hotel, a wonderful, thrilling, fun place… so please come in and stay a while.

The series reunites Robinson with J. Bone, whose clean-line style evoking European comics, brings an added bright energy to this series. While Welcome To The Maynard has magical mystery and danger, it is also a book filled with hope and joy, and is written to appeal to all ages, young and old.

Welcome to the Maynard #1 (of 4) will arrive in comic shops on November 27, 2024 and is now available to preorder at your local comic shop for $4.99.

DC announces Plastic Man No More! from Christopher Cantwell and Alex Lins

DC has announced a new four-issue DC Black Label comic book miniseries launching in September, Plastic Man No More! The Eisner-nominated creative team of Christopher Cantwell and Alex Lins brings you the five words you thought you’d never read in a press release:

Hard-Boiled Plastic Man Noir

Eel O’Brian might be a superhero now—but before he was anything else, he was a crook. Until the accident that turned him into the pliable Plastic Man, Eel was bad to the bone…and just because he no longer has bones doesn’t mean that’s not still true. When an incident on a Justice League mission leads to catastrophic cellular damage, Plastic Man discovers he just might be out of time to make amends for the past he’s tried hard to outrun—or to save the soul of his son, who (unfortunately for him) might have inherited more from dear old Dad than just his superpowers…

Plastic Man No More! #1, written by Cantwell with art and main cover by Lins, additional art by Jacob Edgar, color by Marcelo Maiolo and lettering by Becca Carey, will have variant covers by Michael Allred, Chris Samnee, and Tyler Boss (1:25). Plastic Man No More! #1 will hit local comic book shops on September 4, 2024. Plastic Man No More! is a DC Black Label comic book series and carries an Ages 17+ content descriptor (for mature readers). Each issue of Plastic Man No More! will be 32 pages, with 32 story pages per issue. Artists Riley Rossmo and Martin Morazzo will be featured on additional variant covers throughout the new DC Black Label series.
