IDW Prepares Judge Dredd Reprint Program

[Judge Dredd Image]Following their Comic-Con announcement of the new ongoing Judge Dredd comic’s creative team, IDW Publishing is proud to announce they are expanding and refining plans to offer new editions of beloved Judge Dredd material as well.

Showing a willingness to tailor books to fan requests, IDW’s first hardcover collection of classic Judge Dredd comics, Judge Dredd: The Complete Brian Bolland, will first appear as a fully black-and-white edition, presenting crisp, clean, and stunning pages of Brian Bolland artwork as they first appeared. Bolland’s amazingly detailed linework will be on full display in this oversize hardcover edition.

Owing to the TMNT model again, IDW is also preparing to give the fans of colored art a chance to experience this artwork in full color as well. IDW’s Chris Ryall said:

In the spring, we’ll do as we did with Classic Doctor Who and TMNT Classics, and release the best Dredd stories as monthly color comics. So anyone who loved what we did with that material—applying the most modern coloring techniques to these beloved pages—will also be able to re-experience these Dredd tales in vibrant color.

Charlie Kirchoff will tackle Bolland’s Judge Dredd material for the monthly comics. This ongoing 32-page comic series will also see all-new colors applied to classic work by Carlos Ezquerra, and many other fan-favorite artists.

IDW has other archival Judge Dredd projects planned to complement the full slate of 2000 AD/Rebellion books, in the form of hardcovers that collect the work of other beloved Judge Dredd artists, Treasury Edition-sized comics, and some other special things other than the new ongoing series, which launches in November alongside the Brian Bolland collection.

JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE BRIAN BOLLAND ($49.99, 248 pages, B/W, HC) will be available in November 2012. Diamond order code: APR12 8054. ISBN 978-1-61377-488-5.

SDCC 2012 – Swierczynski and Daniel to Helm Judge Dredd

[Judge Dredd Image]After announcing their partnership with the legendary 2000 AD at WonderCon 2012, IDW Publishing has announced Duane Swierczynski and Nelson Daniel as the creative team for their brand-new Judge Dredd series. The announcement was made to a capacity crowd during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2012 celebrating Dredd’s 35th anniversary.

Daniel will be running point on the main story’s art and colors, but they’ll also be doing back-up stories in each issue that are tied to the ongoing storyline and that will be illustrated by some big-name talents as well. Folks like Paul Gulacy, Jim Starlin, and many others. Add to that covers by people like Ashley Wood, Carlos Ezquerra, Zach Howard, Whilce Portacio, and so many others, and there will be lots of exciting new artistic interpretations of Dredd to come.

IDW’s Judge Dredd series will see new adventures from the legendary character—originally created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for the lauded British anthology magazine 2000 AD—who has seen a long and storied career as one of comics’ most popular and enduring characters. For this take on Dredd, IDW and 2000 AD wanted to put creators behind the wheel that hadn’t worked with the character before, creating new stories that would appeal to new Dredd fans, as well as long-time lovers of the rich world of Mega City One.

Citizens, consider yourselves advised; this November, comics are the law!

The War That Tore The World Apart.

Three tales of lost innocence, tragedy and suspense set during the Second World War, by writer Garth Ennis and artists Russ Braun, Peter Snejbjerg and Carlos Ezquerra.

As the German army smashes deep into Soviet Russia and the defenders of the Motherland retreat in disarray, a new bomber squadron arrives at a Russian forward airbase. Its crews will risk fiery death on lethal night missions against the invader- but for these pilots, the consequences of capture will be even worse. For the crews of the 599th NIght Bomber Regiment are women. In the deadly skies of the Eastern front, they will become a legend- known, to friend and foe alike, as The Night Witches.

1942: in the tropical splendour of the South China Sea, as war spreads across the far east, a young woman finds herself in paradise- and then in hell. Nurse Carrie Sutton is caught up in the Japanese invasion of Singapore, suffering horrors beyond her worst imaginings. Now she attempts to start her life anew, buoyed up by a growing friendship with a young pilot- and,  incredibly, a chance for revenge. But even victory can be a hollow prize, as Carrie discovers to her cost- in Dear Billy.

After D-Day came the battle for Normandy, when untried Allied soldiers met the seasoned veterans of the German Army. As Panzer units and SS troops turn the French countryside into a killing ground, a lone British tank crew struggles to rejoin their squadron. Lost behind enemy lines, their only hope lies in their veteran commander, Corporal Stiles- but can even this wily old trooper lead The Tankies to victory against Germany’s fearsome Tiger tank?

“His [artist Russ Braun] character designs are varied and human, and each player has his or her own look. He handles action and character interaction equally well, and seems to have a particular talent for drawing emotion through a character’s eyes.”– Blog@newsarama.com

“None of the emotion is faked, all of the dialogue is absolutely fantastic, and the letter written to Billy is perfectly executed.” – iFanboy.com

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: no one in comics does World War II better than Garth Ennis…” – ComicsWaitingRoom.com

“War is clearly a back and forth exchange of escalation, and Ennis shows that escalation can become a matter of emotion and brutality, not being restricted to weapons technology and tactics.” – WeeklyComicBookReview.com
