Robotech: Rick Hunter #1 is a fantastic reintroduction to Rick Hunter and the world of Robotech

Robotech: Rick Hunter #1

As a child of the 1980s, I was lucky enough to be of the time when anime was still new to the United States. I remember when those videotapes started to show up on video shops and places like Suncoast Video. It was even more interesting to even find them in places like Tower Records which normally stocks music and books. We grew up watching shows like Speed Racer, it was a new world and showed us just how different Japanese animation was.

It was not until shows like Voltron came onto our screens that we saw just superior their IPs were. That is when I found Robotech, which was an epic space opera,  that succeeded where the original Battlestar Galactica failed. It showed how war changed people and just how similar we all were. In the debut issue of Robotech: Rick Hunter, we find one of the main protagonists, as he investigates a new threat, while meeting some old friends along the way

We are taken to a remembrance ceremony for those who perished when the SDF-1 was destroyed by the Zentraedi, where Rick being promoted to Major General, as he being put in charge of a major expedition. Right when he tries to settle in his new role, he gets a transmission from an old friend, Vince Grant,  as the Zentraedi has taken control of one of the UEEF’s flagships and they could only trust Rick with the mission. As he and the rest of Pegasus Squadron head back to Earth to retrieve the flagship, they encounter bogeys along the way, where they lose a fellow pilot but find the base they were supposed to land and refuel, under fire. By the issue’s end, Pegasus squadron try to regroup and the reader meets the leader of these rogue Zentraedi

Overall, Robotech: Rick Hunter #1 is a fantastic reintroduction to Rick Hunter and the world of Robotech. The story by Easton in is masterful. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, Robotech: Rick Hunter is a story that diehard fans like me will love.

Robotech: Rick Hunter #1 kicks off the next chapter of the classic saga

Robotech: Rick Hunter #1

After the devastating events of the Macross saga, Rick Hunter must face an all new threat, along with the ghosts of his past when a Zentraedi splinter group attacks Yokohama, Rick is called to investigate! Piloting the new prototype YF-4 Veritech, Rick encounters old friends and new enemies, all while recounting the moments of his life that shaped most epic moments in the Robotech universe! Robotech: Rick Hunter #1 kicks off the next chapter of this classic series.

Written by Brandon Easton, Robotech: Rick Hunter #1 has the difficult task of balancing a beloved franchise with also being welcoming for new readers. It pulls that off by giving the basics without going into too much detail. You’re quickly caught up with what you need to know. But, that also creates an issue where new readers might not quite connect with the characters enough to really care what happens. But, for longtime fans of Macross/Robotech, you’ll find a comic that feels like a logical continuation of what has come before. There’s no crazy updating or changes here, it’s just the next chapter. And that makes the comic work and work quite well.

Easton also does his best to balance action with some history. We get a bit of Rick’s past as he and his team go off to investigate something and wind up in battle. But, there isn’t quite enough were we’re really rooting for Rick. He, and most of the characters, just are. There’s a depth that’s not delivered in the comic to really connect with everyone introduced. We get personalities more than characters.

The art by Simone Ragazzoni continues the classic look of it all. Even I, who hasn’t watched any of the anime in years, could recognize the characters and vehicles with ease. Ragazzoni is joined by Bryan Valenza on color and Deron Bennett on lettering. There’s a new generation of fighters introduced as well that look like a next step instead of a radical change, it’s an interesting decision and opens up some exciting potential as we’re all teased with transformations in the action.

Robotech: Rick Hunter #1 feels like a comic that’ll appeal to fans of the franchise. There’s enough that new readers won’t get lost, and may want to see what has come before. It’s definitely entertaining with solid pacing and good action that’s a nice start for the next chapter.

Sins Of Sinister Dominion #1 Caps Off The Event With A Bang

Sins of Sinister: Dominion

I’ve been unsure of my feelings toward the Sins of Sinister event. It has been an intriguing experiment in comic book storytelling. Three sets of issues focused on three distinct eras, year 10, year 100, and finally, year 1,000. Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 by Kieron Gillen, Paco Medina, and Lucas Werneck is the final issue to this eleven-part saga, and by god what an issue it is. Whatever my opinions on the rest of the event, you have to hand it to the creative team for nailing this issue in every conceivable way possible

Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 opens with the final battle for the Moria engine, Sinister’s creation which allows him to create save points in time that he can infinitely reset to. Functionally this means he can save scum as you would in an RPG, trying over and over again to get the result you want. Earlier in the event the engine was stolen. It’s the MacGuffin at the heart of the event. So the final battle begins with various players all vying for control of the engine for their sinister ends.

Gillen crafts a fun issue, One that comes with a whole heap of startling and exciting revelations and developments. It’s a real page-turner that will keep the reader on their toes. You can feel the scale of what is being played here. There is some epic utilization of various powers. Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 honestly has dizzying implications for the future of the X line. So often events can feel like big nothing burgers where everything goes back to a status quo with nothing changed. Not here, we get a lot of change which offers exciting new avenues for the next chapter of the X-Men’s story. Wrapping up an event is never an easy thing to do, but here Gillen succeeds by leaps and bounds.

I was a little apprehensive of Paco Medina’s art at first. To me, it didn’t quite fit the grim dark tone established for the one-thousandth year of the sinister era. However, upon further reading, it all clicked. Medina’s art has a manic energy, which perfectly fits this desperate scramble at the end of time. It reflects the desperation and panic of our leading characters. Medina also delivers on the big bombastic moments befit of a riff on Warhammer 40k.

Similarly, everyone else is doing an exceptional job, Lucas Werneck’s work is amazing as ever and helps tie the event in further with his work on Immortal X-Men. The coloring by Bryan Valenza and lettering by VC’s Clayton Cowles is dynamic and perfectly fits the tone and story of the issue, helping bridge the gap between the two artists.

I’m blown away by this issue. It’s Gillen and co at their very best, truly delivering an exciting installment in this ongoing narrative that will send shockwaves throughout the line. Personally, I can’t wait to see where these creatives take the story next!

Invincible Iron Man #5 builds new threats for both Iron Man and Mutants

Invincible Iron Man #5

I’ve written before on my personal Tumblr how Invincible Iron Man by Gerry Duggan and Juan Frigeri opened to a somewhat rocky start. However, the last couple of issues have only improved in quality. Invincible Iron Man #5 continues that trend with flying colors. Tony Stark has lost his company to his new mutant-hating nemesis, Feilong. With his back against the wall, he goes to the enemy of his enemy, asking for the aid of Krakoa’s one and only Emma Frost!

The cover of Invincible Iron Man #5 prominently features Emma Frost, but that’s a bit misleading (as covers often are). Emma does feature in the issue, but her page time, while sweet, is brief. That’s not the only reason X fans might want to check out the issue though. Feilong debuted in Duggan’s X-Men series and has ties to the anti-mutant organization Orchis. The issue continues to build the threat of Feilong in interesting and compelling ways while also laying seeds for the upcoming X-Men Hellfire Gala 2023.

A complaint I had with the last issue was the fight between Tony and Feilong. The fight felt pretty one-sided. For a new threat, Feilong got rocked by Tony. It failed to set him up as a good physical threat to Tony. Luckily in this issue, it’s rectified. The action sets Feilong up as much more of a threat not only physically but in terms of mechanical power as well!

Frigeri’s art aided by colorist Bryan Valenza and letterer Joe Caramagna continues to shine when the action hits. One of the best parts of the art is how it depicts the mechanic structure of Stark technology. There is a tactile sense from the images on display that elevates the scenes. The art isn’t out of this world but it shines where it counts.

Invincible Iron Man continues to walk a fine line of working as a standalone book while also being part of a larger story Duggan is telling across his books. The issue does a good job filling in readers on the relevant events from X-Men and it never feels like you need to have read the book, but it certainly improves both if you have.

Sins of Sinister: Dominion wraps up the nightmare while setting up Fall of X

Sins of Sinister: Dominion

A thousand years of hell and damnation comes to end with the loudest scream in history and for the truly guilty, there is no escape. Can the future change the present, or will we just make all the same mistakes again? Either way, the present will have to live with the future’s sins. Sins of Sinister: Dominion wraps up the recent X-Men event and also sets up the upcoming “Fall of X” storyline.

Written by Kieron Gillen, Sins of Sinister: Dominion is an interesting issue in that it packs in a hell of a lot and does it in a way that doesn’t feel like things are cut short. Gillen does a solid job of not just delivering action in the future but also the impact in the present while also setting up the next storyline. This isn’t an issue that simply “blinks” at the end allowing other comics to deal with the fallout, a lot happens here. That’s both good and bad.

Much like the event as a whole, Sins of Sinister: Dominion feels a bit like it’s missing some key points and information, like a record skipping a bit. Ideas are tossed into the issue with little explanation and much like the rest of the event too. You just roll with the flow of it all, accepting what’s in front of you and taking things as they are. New characters are introduced, sure to be popular with readers, and major status-quo changes happen too. But, what’s truly nice is it isn’t a clean ending. Sinister’s machinations have an impact in the present and things aren’t “fixed” neatly. It’s all rather dirty a nice change in some ways from past events. Sinister has screwed over some key characters with his manipulation leaving their future in the unknown and in question. There’s no neat and clean ending here.

The art by Paco Medina and Lucas Werneck is nice. With color by Bryan Valenza and lettering by Clayton Cowles the art is packed with a lot of action. But, there’s also a clear difference between the two styles, one I like and one not as much. It’s a small distraction that was noticeable and some of the art just isn’t as strong as other points. But, there’s a sense of flair and style that has weaved its way through all of Sins of Sinister and this is no exception.

Sins of Sinister: Dominion wraps things up well but like the event itself feels like it needed more space to do so. Overall, the event was an interesting one skipping through time over three series bookended by two issues. It delivered pieces of the overall story, forcing readers to put the dots together. The finale doesn’t totally do that but definitely could have benefited from fleshing some aspects out a bit more than it does. If nothing else, it sets up what’s next to come, and that might be more interesting than the event itself.

Story: Kieron Gillen Art: Paco Medina, Lucas Werneck
Color: Bryan Valenza Letterer: Clayton Cowles Design: Tom Muller, Jay Bowen

Planet of the Apes #1 is a powerful debut that expands the movies

Planet of the Apes #1

Witnessing the carnage that took place on January 6th, was something I thought I would never see in our modern time. Seeing the lengths that people would go for a lie, showed the world how fanatical the far right has gone. To see the vitriol that humans would do to law enforcement officials was probably the most distressing. This showed a new low for how humans would act if they do not get their way.

As harrowing as the actual riot was, the fallout form it , was even worse. The denials and hearings showed the world just how broken our nation is, when we cannot face the truth. As the misconception that a certain race of people will be replaced if diversity and inclusion exists, is the biggest lie any human would believe. In Planet Of The Apes #1, we find out what humanity will do when they think their actual existence will cease.

We are taken to 2011 San Francisco, at the start of the outbreak, where a group of scientists are trying to find the links between chimpanzees and humans can prevent a full on disaster, but this turned into a full on war between humans and apes. We fast forward 4 years later, to a military mission where they are transporting orangutans and chimpanzees, where we find how the war had been fought in Florida, Ghana, and Switzerland. We find out also how the human population had been affected and how one solider found her way to the be part of the cure. By the issue’s end, the apes on the plane eventually conspire together, to fight for themselves and await the perfect opportunity.

Overall, Planet of the Apes #1 is a powerful debut issue that picks right up where the movies end. The story by Walker is intense. The art by the creative team is awe inspiring. Altogether, a re-entry into a world that Planet of the Apes fans will absolutely enjoy.
