Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Break Hasn’t Hurt

Bookmark and Share

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkIt seems a break hasn’t hurt the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.  It’s five preview performances last week after it’s hiatus brought in $809,941.  The production did five performances instead of the normal eight in it’s first week back.  Before it was shut down, the musical was regularly bringing in between $1.3 million and $1.5 million a week.

The top five musicals were:

  • Wicked – $1.607 million
  • The Lion King – $1.562 million
  • The Book of Mormon – $1.13 million
  • Jersey Boys – $1.061 million

After sacking the director, bringing in someone to help with the music and so other work, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is ready to resume previews.  Below is a new advertisement for the retooled show.  Will reviewers be more kind to this version?

The retooling saw another $5 million sunk into the disaster.  And new writers who were more familiar with comic books and a new director were brought into the plagued show.

I’m expecting more injuries and our making fun in 3…2…1…

Another Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Injury

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkWhat will it take for someone to pull the plug on this disaster?  T.V. Carpio who took over as Arachne in Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was injured during a battle scene and will be out for the next two weeks.  While the extent of the injury wasn’t disclosed, it occurred on March 16.  An understudy will take over the part while Carpio recovers.

The injury occurred in a scene that involved a confrontation between Peter Parker and Arachne and involved hand-to-hand fighting.

This is the fifth injury during the musical and the original Arachne Natalie Mendoza suffered a concussion during the first preview performance.  She later bowed out.

On top of injuries the musical (reportedly costing upwards of $70 million) has been plagued by issues.  There’s been recent leadership changes, including the sacking of original director Julie Taymor.  Additional people have been brought in to improve the music, script and well, everything.

The show will go on hiatus for three weeks from April 19 to May 11 so the actors can get used to the changes.  Despite the issues the show continues to be popular and earned $1.4 million last week coming in third.

Arts Beat – Effects Coordinator Cleared in Death of ‘Dark Knight’ Cameraman – Nothing snarky to say for this one.

BREAKING – Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark – New Creative Team Announced

Bookmark and Share

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkWe’ve been taking some weeks off from beating on the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, but it’s been a pretty tumultuous time.  It just hit their blog a new creative team has been announced for the struggling musical as well as further delays.

Just posted on their blog:

Lead producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris announced today that SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark has a newly expanded creative team in place. The team will be implementing a new plan to make significant and exciting revisions to the production. Opening night (previously set for March 15, 2011) has been rescheduled to an evening in early summer, 2011. This amended schedule will allow the time necessary to execute the plan, which will include revisions to the script.

The additional time commitment required by this new plan will make it impossible for director and co-book writer Julie Taymor to continue on in her day-to-day duties with the production. Philip William McKinley and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa have joined the creative team to help implement new staging and book rewrites, respectively. McKinley has vast experience directing technically complex productions on Broadway and beyond. Aguirre-Sacasa is both an acclaimed playwright and a noted writer of Spider-Man comic books. The expanded creative team also includes musical consultant Paul Bogaev (Tarzan, Bombay Dreams, Aida, Sunset Boulevard) and sound designer Peter Hylenski (Elf, Scottsboro Boys, Rock of Ages, Shrek), both of whom have already been working on improving the musical arrangements and sound quality (respectively) over the past few weeks, thereby vastly enhancing the audience experience.

Producers Cohl and Harris said, in a joint statement, “Julie Taymor is not leaving the creative team. Her vision has been at the heart of this production since its inception and will continue to be so. Julie’s previous commitments mean that past March 15th, she cannot work the 24/7 necessary to make the changes in the production in order to be ready for our opening. We cannot exaggerate how technically difficult it is to make such changes to a show of this complexity, so it’s with great pride that we announce that Phil McKinley is joining the creative team. Phil is hugely experienced with productions of this scale and is exactly what SPIDER-MAN Turn off the Dark needs right now.”

Bono and The Edge added, “Julie is a truly gifted and imaginative director. This is an epic ride, and the standing ovations we have seen from the preview audiences have confirmed our absolute faith in the project. We are listening and learning and, as a result, we have a couple of new songs we are very very excited about putting into the mix. All of us on the creative team are committed to taking SPIDER-MAN to the next level. We are confident it will reach its full potential and when it does, it will open.”

Lots of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark News Include a Delay! (Shocker)

Bookmark and Share

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkSpider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has been in the news a lot recently.  The troubled Broadway musical will be seeing another delay.  This is the fifth delay for the musical which will now open on March 15.  I’m willing to bet that it doesn’t open in 2011 and gets a few more delays.  Producers, Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris, said the opening was pushed back “to allow for more time to fine-tune aspects of the show, including the new ending.”  Cohl also picked this date to make sure it was the “final postponement.”

Grammy-winning record producer Steve Lillywhite has also joined the musical’s staff.  He’s working on the cast album and has worked with U2 who’s Bono and The Edge are responsible for the musical’s music.

And in stranger news, Glenn Beck railed against theater critics and declaring the musical better than Wicked.  On his radio show the controversial commentator used a fake French accent to mock critics who’ve been taking the musical to task.  He also called “Spider-Man” as the 21st century equivalent of “The Phantom of the Opera.”
