Review: Aliens: Defiance #11

The mangled Europa is in a state of free fall in Earth’s atmosphere with Zula, Davis, Hollis, and a previously frozen xenomorph onboard. Davis battles the alien threat while Hollis and Zula scramble to the escape hatch. Impact is unavoidable; survival is doubtful.

After all of the intense action Aliens: Defiance #11 returns us to Earth. As one might expect, things don’t go according to plan for Zula or Hollis. Despite Zula’s agreement with her doctor, they both find themselves under arrest. I think they’re only being kept alive to be used as scapegoats for the mission being a failure. I’m curious to see how this plays out for both Hollis and Zula.

The art style shifts some to something more grounded which makes sense considering the setting. The flashbacks do come off as confusing though they are intriguing. Unfortunately that all seems out of place. It feels like it builds in the mystery making me wonder if there are more to them than it appears.

A First Look At The Zentraedi In the Brand-New Robotech #1

An attack on the Europa by space pirates leaves Zula, Davis, and Hollis on a barely functional ship. They now must return to Earth, where the Weyland-Yutani corporation is waiting and ready to put an end to their rogue mission.

In Aliens: Defiance #10 Europa is now nothing more than floating scrap metal, with Zula, Davis, and Hollis still on board. And, with them now approaching Earth, they face certain death. That reality forces them to take drastic measures which is leaving Davis behind, as Zula and Hollis take what may be their only chance at life.

The art by Stephen Thompson is fantastic. The issue gives us a look at the more dress based space marine clothing. The perspective shifts a little as views from space and the Europa to Earth manages to be spotlighted well. That new perspective manages to create a blend of reality and science fiction.

Reveiw: Aliens: Defiance #9

A fledgling alien, kept alive in a deep freeze for the purpose of learning its weaknesses, wages a psychological war on Zula, Davis, and Hollis. They try to keep it together, but an attack on the Europa by space pirates forces the trio to weaponize what they seek to destroy.

Something shocking is revealed about the fledgling alien in Aliens: Defiance #9. And with that, writer Brian Wood manages to make the situation for Europa go from bad to worse. What’s interesting and feels new is the use the natural lethality of the alien against the pirates. It does beg the question, were the pirates after the fledgling alien or was it just a matter of coincidence?

The art by Tony Brescini like previous issues is gruesome and violent. There’s some solid short fire-fights between the pirates and Zula. And even with all the action, the blood-drenched appearance of the alien is a terrifying sight to behold.

Review: Aliens: Defiance #8

Keeping a baby xenomorph alive, even in a frozen state, contradicts all the survival instincts that Zula and Hollis have. But by studying the alien in cryostasis, Davis believes he can discover how to exterminate it and the rest of its forsaken, vile race permanently. Is he dooming the mission in the name of science?

With the ship in a state of distress, things become blurred in Aliens: Defiance #8. Writer Brian Wood keeps things intriguing mixing in constants with other things that keep you trying to figure out what is real and what isn’t. I’m curious to see what path Zula will choose to follow in upcoming issues.

The art by Stephen Thompson is solid and creates a believable atmosphere of dread. Even if some of it repeats itself as the issue continues it works to bolster the level of fear, as things begin to worsen.

Review: Aliens: Defiance #7

In the aftermath of the intense battle against the Colonial Marines, Zula Hendricks and Davis have gone from being merely AWOL to full-blown traitors. As they drift into a quiet part of space to recover and regroup, new crew member Dr. Hollis discovers something in the medical bay that changes everything. Sometimes evil comes from within.

A new story begins on the heels of the old in Aliens: Defiance #7. It brings some of the strangest aspects yet to this series. While I won’t spoil the surprise, it is a clear shaping point of this story arc written by Brian Wood. I’m curious to see what will happen next.

The art style of Stephen Thompson brightens up a little in contrast to the story itself getting a little darker. The issue also debuts a new cover artist, Stephanie Hans. If the cover doesn’t catch your eye, I’m not sure what to say to you. You are missing out a solid series.
