PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie takes the weekend box office as the top five is packed with new films

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Force

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Force was the top film at the weekend box office debuting with $23 million at the domestic box office. The film grossed a similar amount internationally with $24.4 million with a worldwide total of $47.4 million.

Saw X came in second with $18 million domestically and $11.3 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $29.3 million worldwide. That domestic opening was similar to the first film, better than Saw VI‘s $14.1 million, 2017’s Jigsaw‘s $16.6 million, and Spiral’s $8.8 million in 2021. So, while the amount seem low, it’s actually pretty on par with the franchise’s opening and would likely point to a similar $100 million gross by the time it’s over.

The Creator opened in third with $14 million domestically and $18.3 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $32.3 million. With a reported budget of $80 million, Disney has to be disappointed with the result and it’s a number fumble for the formal giant.

The Nun II tumbled from first place to fourth with an estimated gross with $4.7 million to bring its domestic total to $76.8 million. Over the week, the film grossed about $19.4 million internationally to bring that to $154.4 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $231.2 million.

Rounding out the top five was The Blind which debuted with just under $5 million domestically. No international total was reported.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed about $6,300 over the week domestically to bring its total to $672,791. There’s now some international gross reported of $9,284, and increase of about $3,100. Worldwide, the film has grossed $682,075.

The week’s overall box office success…

The Nun II repeats in first as Expend4bles stumbles to second

The Nun II

It was a repeat weekend at the top of the box office as The Nun II took first place with an estimated $8.4 million. There’s a chance that result might change as final numbers are adjusted. The movie has now grossed $69.2 million domestically. Internationally, the movie grossed $32.7 million over the week to lift it to $135 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $204.2 million.

Expend4bles debuted in second place with $8.3 million, a series low. Not international returns have been announced. The first film debuted in 2010 with $34.8 million, the second in 2012 with $28.6 million, and third debuted in 2014 with $15.9 million.

A Haunting in Venice slipped one spot to third place with $6.3 million to bring its domestic total to $25.4 million. Over the week, it grossed $23.5 million to bring its international total to $46.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has earned $71.6 million.

Barbie launched on digital services but still held on to fifth place with $3.2 million to bring its domestic total to $630.5 million. Over the week, it added $6.4 million internationally to bring that total to $797 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.427 billion. It’s the top film of 2023 domestically and internationally. The movie is currently #11 in all-time domestic gross and there’s a chance it has enough left to gross the $23 million it needs to pass Jurassic World. Domestically, the movie ranks. Worldwide, the film remains at #14 behind Frozen II. It’d need about $26 million to pass it.

In comic film news…

Blue Beetle came in at #9 with $1.8 million. Domestically, ti has now grossed $69.8 million. Internationally it added $500,000 to the gross bringing that to $53.1 million. The movie has grossed $122.9 million worldwide.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse looks like it remained steady domestically at $381.3 million. Internationally, the film remained steady at $308.5 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $689.8 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

The Nun II repeats in first as A Haunting in Venice scares up second

The Nun II

It’s spooky season and horror films seem to be doing well at the box office. The Nun II was in first place this past weekend, a repeat, not something that’s common with horror films. It dropped just 54.8% from the previous weekend grossing an estimated $14.53 million to bring its domestic gross to $56.5 million. Over the week, it grossed $49.6 million internationally to bring that to $102.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $158.8 million after two weeks. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 dropped one spot to fourth with an estimated $4.7 million at the domestic box office. The film has grossed just $18.6 million after two weeks showing this franchise is pretty much dead. Internationally it’s not doing much better with just $2.6 million over the week to bring that total to $5.3 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just $23.9 million.

Barbie held steady in fifth place with just under $4 million domestically to bring its total to $626.1 million. Over the week, it grossed $8.4 million internationally to bring that to $790.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.417 billion. It’s the top grossing film for 2023 by far domestically and worldwide. The movie is currently #14 in all-time worldwide gross and there’s a good chance it has enough left to gross the $37 million it needs to pass Frozen II. Domestically, it’s #11 having passed The Avengers though it’ll need $27 million to pass Jurassic World. There’s a good chance that might happen before its run is over.

JAIME REYES JOINS THE DAWN OF DC WITH A NEW ONGOING SERIES! Jaime Reyes’s graduation is over, but his new life in Palmera City and as the Blue Beetle has only just begun! With two new Beetles to train in Dynastes and Nitida, Jaime has his hands full navigating being a leader. Thankfully, he has Paco and Brenda by his side as they settle in at Palmera State University. But what lurks in the shadows of Blue Beetle’s new home and what does it mean for the Blue Beetle legacy?

Blue Beetle #1

Blue Beetle #1 delivers shock and awe

Blue Beetle #1

I haven’t had a chance to read “Graduation Day,” the previous miniseries for Blue Beetle. So, that meant I got to come into Blue Beetle #1 with little knowledge as to what to expect and what the status-quo of the character was. I’ve read a little bit here and there, but it’s generally not a character I’ve kept up with but I know the basics. What I quickly found out was what felt like a much expanded world with a additional cast and the start of a rainbow of characters. I immediately got vibes of Power Rangers and the expansion of the Green Lantern mythos and neither of that is a bad thing.

Written by Josh Trujillo, Blue Beetle #1 is a fun start that delivers an opening that’s easy to get started. Readers are dumped right into the action as Jaime Reyes fights the good fight with the help of his mentor Ted Kord, the previous Blue Beetle. But, what’s new, to me, are new members of the crew one yellow and one green. Dynastes and Nitidia, new Beetles to train and who are clearly a bit new to it all based on their actions… and the results. It’s a nice dynamic as Jaime is placed in the role of both student and teacher, something we don’t see too often with heroes.

Also standing out is The Horizon, aliens who are trying to live their lives in Palmera City. Front and center is the bigotry far too many real life groups experience today and the frustration and anger of those groups wanting to do something in response. It’s an interesting dynamic as well considering Jaime’s own background and how others might see him. That, along with some down time of the characters, creates a bit more heart through all of the action and superheroics.

The comic does a nice balance of serious and fun and much of that is helped by the art of Adrián Gutiérrez whose style captures the balance of the comic. It’s able to go from serious to laughs in a short time and overall delivers the vibe the comic is going for. There’s a bit of kinetic energy about it all that is enhanced by the colors from Wil Quintana and lettering by Lucas Gattoni.

Blue Beetle #1 is a solid start to the series. While some aspects might feel familiar, it does it all with quality and a bit of fun that’ll leave readers wanting more. Add in a rather ominous ending, and we have a series that’s not only ready to take shape and flight, but do so in a way that’ll stand out from the pack.
