Blackest Night Heroclix

Bookmark and Share

There’s been some cool tie-ins for the current DC event Blackest Night.  To me the Lantern rings take the cake as the best, some would argue the toys that’ve been released deserve the prize.  Wizkids will be giving those a run for their money with the release of a line of their Heroclix game based on the comic books.

The War of the Light comes to HeroClix with the DC HeroClix Blackest Night Starter Game! As the Blackest Night encompasses the world, heroes and villains alike are deputized into the Lantern Corps to fight back against the legions of Black Lanterns. Choose a team of lanterns and take them into battle! This starter game includes everything a player needs to play HeroClix, including figures, map, rules and more. The DC HeroClix Blackest Night Starter Game will be in stores May 12, 2010.

Contents:
◊ Seven 3D HeroClix miniatures, each with a character card (Green Lantern – Hal Jordan, Lex  Luthor, Mera, Scarecrow, Wonder Woman, The Flash and The Atom in their  deputy lantern costumes)
◊ All-new Green Lantern Sciencells Map
◊ 2010 HeroClix Complete Rulebook
◊ Six Object Tokens
◊ Twelve Terrain Markers
◊ Two 6-sided dice

The idea of the new deputized Lanterns will make this worth being picked up.  Some pictures of what we can expect are below.

To promote Blackest Night, DC offered Lantern rings with various comic books.  Stores could choose if they wanted to do a “buy a book get a ring” promotion or give away the rings separately.

Many retailers were left with a glut of unsold Blackest Night tie-in books sitting on their shelves.  Marvel has decided to take advantage of this glut of books by offering Deadpool Variants of March’s Siege #3 in exchange for the stripped covers of unsold Blackest Night tie-in issues from DC.

It’s a great offer for retailers, as they can make a good amount of change on limited edition variants.  We’re left scratching out heads though as to what Marvel gets out of this, other than a hefty recycling bill.

DC Announces Brightest Day

DC’s blogger Alex Segura has been teasing us all weekend that Dan Didio was announcing something huge for DC comics today.  We now know what it is.  Announced this morning on the DCU Source blog the follow up to Blackest Night (DC’s current event) will be entitled Brightest Day.

The event will be a bi-weekly 26 issue event starting with issue #0 and the main series being handled by written by Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi and offshoots by their regular series teams.

Alex has been updated the Source blog all day and so far has teased what we can expect about the Flash, Titans and Justice League of America.

Review – Blackest Night #6

Bookmark and Share

Since this is an “off week” of sales we have only one review we have to do.  So, today we’ll be providing an extended review for this issue as well as a “secret” comic we decided to check out (check back in a few hours for that one).

Blackest Night #6Plot: The battle with Nekron and the Black Lanterns continues and is not going well.  Every Black Lantern is on their way to Earth and the Lanterns need some back up to unlock the white light and finally defeat Nekron.  To hold off the swarm of undead each Lantern Corps. has picked a new champion to help fight off the tide.  Enter seven new Lanterns to join the battle.

Story: The time has never looked more desperate as the rings are now not only animating the dead but also the resurrected.  Geoff Johns continues to up the action and keeps the feeling of dread coming.  His surprise moment towards the end of the issue is a scene just so cool to see as seven new lanterns are created to enter the fight.  Johns has also been able to tie this mini-series into the greater DC universe and history without weighing it down in continuity that’d make the series opaque for new readers.  We’ve got to more issues to go, and with an incoming swarm and the final confrontation with Black Hand and Nekron to go, expect the action to keep on coming.  Rating: 8.75

Art: Ivan Reis is knocking it out of the park when it comes to this series with amazing action scenes that make you want to linger and check out every fine detail of the page.  From John Stewarts amazing double page spread to the final spread of the new Lanterns this issue is pure eye candy.  Rating: 9

Overall: There’s good reason we’ve declare Blackest Night the event of the year.  Not only is the story fun and cool (it’s not a simple dead rising story) but the art is simply amazing.  There’s a feel of great history and continuity in this issue but it’s also accessible to new readers.  With two issues to go, I’d expect there’s a good chance this event may not be just the event of 2009 but also 2010.  Overall Rating: 9

Recommendation: Buy

Green Lantern: New Guardians

Twitter seems to be the source to receive breaking news about the comic industry directly from the artists and writers.  Geoff Johns (Green Lantern, Blackest Night, Superman: Secret Origin, Flash: Rebirth, and so much more) has revealed through his Twitter account that the next Green Lantern story arc post-Blackest Night will begin with issue number 53 and be entitled, Green Lantern: New Guardians.

Also hinted is that Green Lantern John Stewart will play a decent role in this new arc.  Check out a screen cap of the few tweets below.

Blackest Night Error Rings

Maybe you have some quick cash to make and you don’t even know it.  There were reports of some incorrect rings being issued for DC’s Blackest Night promotion.  What’s made it out into the wild is the wrong symbol for the color.

Error RingThe rings have been hitting Ebay and are fetching some decent cash.  Dubbed “Error Rings” the items were originally being sold for about $15 a pop.  Things have kicked up with an Agent Orange ring produced as red recently being sold for $103, a Sapphire ring with Orange logo went for $89 and a green ring with Sapphire logo and yellow ring with blue logo each went for $35.

So, rush to your collection of rings and check to see if you hit this nice jackpot of quick cash.

Blackest Night #6 Leaks

That noise you hear is the collective industry saying “told you so.”  In October at the Diamond Retailer Summit, DC comics announced it would be releasing Blackest Night #6 the last week in December in what was supposed to be a skip week.  However, they would send the books out a week early with big stickers saying with the street date clearly laid out.  I think it was pretty obvious it would leak and the street date would be broken.

Well, it happened pretty quickly.  Early this morning, pages and spoilers from Blackest Night #6 appeared across the internet including the CBR Forums, Penny Arcade, writer Geoff Johns own message boards at ComicBloc.com and the official DC Comics message boards.  The images have since been taken down by DC’s request.

The series writer Geoff Johns had this to say:

I’m glad people are excited about the book.

The issue has also hit Torrent sites within 24 hours of it’s shipping in lower than usual quality scans.

Really this was an experiment by Diamond and DC to see if such a release would work and I could of told them it wouldn’t.  I think the bigger question is why should I go to my comic shop to pick up one comic (other than I have nothing better to do).  This should of just been released this week.
