A team-up set up by SWORDS OF SORROW’s Gail Simone, featuring the writer that she hand-picked: Nancy A. Collins! Now that the threat of the Pacifica Slasher/Anaheim Ripper has been handled, Vampirella must figure out how to survive in a world without monsters—including where to find her next meal. Meanwhile, Jennifer Blood turns her attention to Los Muertos, a deadly narco gang with a fondness for turning the faces of those who cross them into sporting goods. However, her plans for the gang’s leaders are derailed by yet another Jennifer Blood copycat—one who bears a disturbing resemblance to a certain voluptuous vampire.

Review: Green Lantern #41

Green Lantern #41 Cover“Renegade”! Beginning a new chapter in Hal Jordan’s life as he becomes the universe’s most wanted outlaw! And wait till you meet Hal’s new partner, Darlene – she’s definitely not what you’re expecting!

I’ve read DC’s various Green Lantern series for years at this point, but fell off in recent months as I got distracted, and a glut of comics were released (sadly something had to go). This issue felt like a perfect hopping on point, to see what I’ve been missing, and it’s been a decent amount apparently.

Green Lantern #41 marks the beginning of a new status-quo for Hal Jordan as he’s on the run, a wanted man, and sporting some tech to get him his green glow.

Writer Robert Venditti has been on the job as part of the team dismantling the Green Lantern universe in a way. There was a point, while fun, the GL world was bloated with characters, and rings (it was if Oprah was giving them away). Now Venditti, and the other writers tackling other facets, have pared that world down, stripping rings, and leaving us one hell of a mystery as to what happened to the Green Lantern Corps at the end of the book.

Jordan is again the loner, brash pilot who’s off doing good, but doing it the way he sees fit. There’s a freshness about it, including an updated look for Jordan that I really dig.

Helping Venditti is Billy Tan and Mark Irwin on art. As expected, the art is fantastic. For some reason the various Green Lantern books have been blessed with solid art over the past few years (as long as I can remember). That continues here with aliens that look cool, and a display of action that enhances the writing. There’s some very cool moments that pop art wise.

A fantastic starting point, this issue not only has me excited for what’s to come, but also has me wanting to go back and see what I’ve missed.

The Women Take Over for Swords of Sorrow

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the May 2015 launch of Swords of Sorrow, the genre-spanning crossover event featuring an all-star line-up of female authors, headlined by Gail Simone.  Debuting with a core Swords of Sorrow series by Simone, the crossover continues throughout May with tie-in titles including the Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood miniseries written by Nancy A. Collins; the Swords of Sorrow: Chaos special by Mairghread Scott; and the Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade / Kato special by G. Willow Wilson and Erica Schultz. Subsequent months will debut related projects by additional female authors, including Leah Moore, Marguerite Bennett, Emma Beeby, and Mikki Kendall. The crossover event brings together Dynamite’s wide roster of female characters, including the iconic Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris (of the popular Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Warlord of Mars franchise), and Vampirella.

Simone’s core Swords of Sorrow story serves as the starting point for a new universe of pulp adventure. Illustrated by Sergio Davila, the series features the supernatural heroine Vampirella, Martian princess Dejah Thoris, crimson-tressed swordswoman Red Sonja, martial artist Kato (from filmmaker Kevin Smith’s reboot of The Green Hornet), primal warrior Jungle Girl, and many more. Drawn from a dozen worlds and eras to face off against a legendary evil that threatens their homelands, Dynamite’s fiercest females must overcome their differences to harness the power of mystical blades — the eponymous Swords of Sorrow — in final conflict.

Swords of Sorrow #1 features a variety of cover editions, including a Main cover by industry superstar J. Scott Campbell; variants by Jenny Frison, Emanuela Lupacchino; a subscription edition by Robert Hack available to fans placing preorders with their local retailers; and incentive editions by Joyce Chin, Tula Lotay, Nei Ruffino, Cedric Poulat.  Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood #1 and the Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade / Kato special both feature covers by Billy Tan, while the Swords of Sorrow: Chaos special spotlights Joyce Chin.

Dynamite Takes Familiar Characters to Altered States

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the first wave of its all-new Altered States line where familiar characters from Dynamite’s comics will appear in brand-new adventures unlike anything fans have seen before. Vampirella, Red Sonja, The Shadow, and Doc Savage will each star in their own story set in a parallel reality in the vein of DC’s classic Elseworlds and Marvel’s What If! where anything can – and will – happen to them.

The publisher has brought on an array of the industry’s top talent to help tell these unique tales:

  • Writer Brandon Jerwa teams up with artist Juanan Ramirez for Altered States: Red Sonja, a story about a red headed museum worker in New York City who soon finds herself fighting for survival in a dystopian-inspired Hyborian wasteland.
  • In Altered States: Vampirella, veteran Vampirella scribe Nancy A. Collins and artist Francesco Manna turn the tables on Ella Normandy after she survives a crash landing to become the sole human on a planet full of Vampires.
  • Writer David Avallone pulls double duty in this special event, teaming up with artist Ivan Rodriguez for Altered States: The Shadow, and a tale that proves once and more that there are worse things in the world than the evil that lurks within the hearts of men. Then in Altered States: Doc Savage, David and artist Dave Acosta explore what happens when the world’s most powerful man is turned into a rampaging beast whose very humanity may be lost forever.

Each issue will feature a cover by Billy tan.

Each Altered States story will unfold in a 32 page full-color comic. With a new issue planned for release every Wednesday in March.

Altered States will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ January Previews catalog and slated for release March 2015.
