Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alien #1 (Marvel) – A world is infected by the universe’s greatest killers, Weyland-Yutani sees a payout even if it costs a few human lives.

Animal Pound Ashcan (BOOM! Studios) – Get a look at the new series from Tom King and Peter Gross that’s a new reimagining of George Orwell’s classic. How it’ll stand out from that other recent take, Animal Castle (which is amazing), will be intriguing.

Batman and Robin #3 (DC Comics) – The series has been fun so far as it balances the superheroics with Bruce and Damian attempting to be a normal father and son.

Dark X-Men #4 (Marvel) – The series has been fun so far remember the dysfunction within the X-Men that can be so entertaining.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #301 (Skybound) – Larry Hama continues his epic run with artist Chris Mooneyham!

Lotus Land #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Something about technology that promises to end entropy itself and an attack on that program brings out a retired Detective. It sounds intriguing and the art looks great.

Outsiders #1 (DC Comics) – The Outsiders are back in this stealth launch of something bigger… something more… Planetary.

Rose Wolves Vol. 1 (IDW Publishing) – This wordless two-color graphic novel is an enthralling fable about disability, companionship, and transformation, set in the haunting beauty of the wild.

Speed Force #1 (DC Comics) – DC’s expanding the world of the Flash and we’re intrigued where this aspect of it all goes.

Star Wars: Visions #1 (Marvel) – Peach Momoko does Star Wars.

The Deviant #1 (Image Comics) – As snow falls over Milwaukee in 1972, a blood-stained Santa Claus commits unimaginable atrocities against young men. Fifty years later, a troubled young writer interviews this so-called “Deviant Killer,” who still maintains his innocence from behind bars.

The Ministry of Compliance #1 (IDW Publishing) – Writer John Ridley with artist Stefano Raffaele? Yes please! Thirty-seven years ago, Earth was secretly invaded by an alien force known as the Devolution, and they have been shaping the direction humanity has been going in ever since to prepare us to be assimilated into their empire.

Batman and Robin #3

(W) Joshua Williamson (A) Simone Di Meo
In Shops: Nov 14, 2023
SRP: $4.99

White Rabbit is a key witness in uncovering Gotham’s newest criminal mastermind, and Batman and Robin realize the only way to keep her safe is to break her out of Arkham Tower! But Damian still has homework to deal with!

Batman and Robin #3

Batman and Robin #2 continues an intriguing series that stands out from the Bat-pack

Batman and Robin #2

Introducing Shush. Who does she work for? And how have they turned one of Batman’s greatest tools against him? Urban Jungle continues as the father and son dynamic duo are on the deadly case! But first, Damian must deal with…his first day of school?! Batman and Robin #2 balances and delivers the domestic and dynamic in a second issue that continues the fun new series.

While the other Bat comics are embroiled in “Gotham War,” Batman and Robin #2 continues the step back with its story where that’s happened/happening but focused squarely on Batman/Robin/Bruce/Damian. Written by Joshua Williamson, Batman and Robin #2 continues the first issue’s excellent balance of domestic life with high flying adventures.

Picking up on the first issue, Batman has been dosed with something that has made Bats attack him while a group of villains have made off with a scientist. The second issue pulls back the curtain on both with explanations that balance the more serious and grounded nature of modern Batman comics and a campiness of classic Batman. It’s explanations and actions that feel so silly when you zoom back and think about them but delivered in a way that you accept what you’re being told.

But, it’s Damian who stands out as Williamson continues to nail home that this is a kid who has never had a chance to really be a kid. He connects with people he shouldn’t really be connecting with and doesn’t know the “normal” social interactions someone his age should. That’s emphasized in the opening sequence as well as Damian in school, which also highlights the fun humor Williamson delivers throughout his writing. It’s all fantastic that shows off why Damian is one of the best Robins and how much he’s grown since his first introduction.

The art by Simone Di Meo continues to be amazing with Steve Wands delivering a punch of emotion with the lettering. The style and coloring of the comic feels like a great blend of recent Bat styles, a bit of neon of Future Gotham and the more dreary grounded current issues. There’s a youthful punch about the comic that matches the vibe and energy of the writing and Di Meo adds detail that also adds to the story. Damian stitching up his father has a specificity about that that tells us a lot about Damian and also Bruce’s wounds. It’s all worth a pause, examination, and contemplation. The devil is in the visual details here.

Batman and Robin #2 is a solid issue and between it and the debut, makes the case this is the Bat comic on the stands right now. It’s a fun read with a mix of grounded and campy, seriousness and humor, with relationships at the center of it all. Sit back and enjoy this one.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

American Psycho #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

A Haunted Girl #1 (Image Comics) – Cleo, an adopted 16-year-old Japanese-American whose depression drove her to near-suicide, is trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life. But her struggles are just beginning as she encounters an increasingly terrifying succession of ghosts.

American Psycho #1 (Massive Publishing/Sumerian) – Witness the greatest hits of Patrick’s murderous rampage while exploring new revelations in the world of American Psycho. On that, we’re dubious, but it’s also the journey of an all-new psychopath as social media obsessed millennial. That, we’re more intrigued by.

Batman and Robin #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue did a great job of balancing superheroics and family drama and we’re expecting more!

Batman: City of Madness #1 (DC Comics) – Writer/artist Christian Ward takes on Batman, nuff said.

Capwolf and the Howling Commandos #1 (Marvel) – It’s such a silly concept but perfect for the season.

Destiny Gate #1 (Image Comics/Top Cow Production) – Life, for the most part, is the product of the decisions you make. For some, a “wrong” decision or two (or more) leads to a crossroads on the other side of the Destiny Gate.

Earthdivers #11 (IDW Publishing) – Mission isn’t accomplished so it’s on to 1776 and an attempt to cave out a better future in the Declaration of Independence.

Mech Cadets #3 (BOOM! Studios) – The series has been a fantastic reintroduction to the world that mixes up military/giant robot/alien genres with youthful energy.

Midlife Hero at Fifty #1 (Image Comics) – After 25 years in the LAFD, Ruben’s firmly in the middle of an unremarkable life…until his new wife gets pregnant and a random act of courage reveals that Ruben is FIREPROOF!

Nights #1 (Image Comics) – Supernatural creatures exist among the common folk, and America is comprised of just 31 states. Ok, that’s enough to get us to check this out.

Operation Sunshine #1 (Dark Horse) – A group of young, alienated vampires known as “bugs” plot to steal a magical object from ancient monstrous vampires to turn themselves back to human.

Scarlett Couture: The Munich File #3 (Titan Comics) – Sexy pop spy action!

Superior Spider-Man Returns #1 (Marvel) – We’re fans of the original run with the character and intrigued to see how this return happens.

Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #1 (DC Comics) – The classic Sandman is back and must get his journal with all of the other failed and more deadly gas formulas back.
