Review – Valiant Comics’ Archer & Armstrong #3 and Bloodshot #4

Archer & Armstrong #3

Archer & Armstrong to me is Valiant’s strongest title launched to date. The series has Archer and Armstrong chasing down pieces of a tool called the Boon that an evil cabal called the 1% is after. Add in religious nuts, kung-fu action and great humor, the series is beyond solid and entertaining.

Archer and Armstrong have leapt one step ahead of the The Sect in their worldwide race to collect the fragments of the mythical Boon. But will the ninja nuns that protect the Vatican’s archive of forbidden knowledge prevent Valiant’s newest adventurers from acquiring the next clue they need to complete their quest? If they fail, the Boon’s civilization-leveling powers might just end everything – again. So when another member of the Archer clan suddenly appears, will Archer & Armstrong walk into their latest melee with a new ally at their side – or a knife in the back?

There’s part Indiana Jones here, part comedy, it’s a great mix all together. How the villians, the 1%, haven’t cause more of an uproar is beyond me. Easily the best of Valiant and one of the most entertaining comics on the market.

Bloodshot #4

What top-secret cataclysm did Project Rising Spirit unleash years ago on Atlee, Nevada? And what role did the nanite-enhanced commando known as Bloodshot play in scratching an entire city off the map? With his false memories now wiped away, Bloodshot and the PRS escapee codenamed Pulse are about to bring one hell of a reckoning to the black ops butchers that made them into walking weapons. But will the truth that lies beneath Atlee leave Bloodshot bloodied – or with blood on his hands?

Bloodshot is a character that I was always mixed on and that follows into this series. This issue is more of an action one, that ads a bit to the layer of the character’s past, but I think the series has been best when focusing on the madness and mental issues of the character. That can get old if used too much, but in small doses, like the series has done, it works very well.

This is a more action focused issue as Bloodshot focuses in on his mission to figure out his past. It’s a bridge issue taking the initial set up of the first three issues and moving onto the greater story. It’s interesting so far, but not quite as good as I think it could be.

Valiant debuts October’s Character Design Covers by visionary artists David Aja and Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic.

Aja redesigned many of the characters for the publisher’s “Summer of Valiant” launch, including Archer & Armstrong, Bloodshot, and Harbinger’s own Peter Stanchek and Toyo Harada, while Djurdjevic was responsible for the the newly updated X-O Manowar. Now, Valiant is sharing their behind-the-scenes work for the first time in print with an exclusive month of variant covers for all four of its October titles!
