Wolverine has finally returned, disentwined from the evil clutches of Soteira…but hang on, didn’t he have an Infinity Stone? How did THAT happen?! And wasn’t he popping up all over the place for a little while? The answers you seek are finally revealed as Logan goes cosmic alongside everyone’s favorite god of lies and stories, Loki Laufeyson!
Wolverine: Infinity Watch #1 begins to put the pieces of a puzzle together that’s years in the making. Writer Gerry Duggan does the task of making the picture clearer as its been a bit insane over the years with hints and teases but never a clear answer. Some of that happens here but the result is a story so convoluted it feels like classic Marvel involving alternate timelines and time travel.
The result is an issue that’s for the diehard fans. It’s not easy to get in to and even having read all of the important issues, it’s still hard to keep track of everything. The first issue in a way acts as a recap painting a clearer picture but with so many references, one needs a guide on top of the issue.
The art by Andy MacDonald with color by Jordie Bellaire and lettering by Cory Petit is ok. There isn’t much to be excited about as there’s no flashy moments and the characters look good. MacDonald has a style and design aspect and you’ll either enjoy it or not. It’s not my cup of tea but it might be yours. Still, there’s nothing wrong with the art, it’s just a personal style preference in the end.
The issue is an interesting start and attempts to put together a story years in the making. The task isn’t enviable and beyond difficult to make it clear and entertaining for old and new readers. Wolverine: Infinity Watch #1 is a perfectly fine first issue but it’s one that only diehard fans along for the ride will truly enjoy.
