Games Workshop Pre-Order Preview: Ultramarines, Drukhari, Chaos Space Marines, and Da Red Gobbo

It’s a Warhammer 40K heavy pre-order weekend coming up as Games Workshop begins to release the wave of Ultramarines recently revealed.

Crush the enemy with a force entirely built of the toughest, strongest, most experienced Space Marines around – the mighty Terminators. Battleforce: Crux Terminatus is the first place to get the brand new Assault Terminators, which come with enough options to build two sets of five with either thunder hammers and storm shields,or a pair of lethal lightning claws – making ten Assault Terminators in total.

Alongside this unstoppable wall of ceramite you also get the new Ancient in Terminator Armour miniature, who flies an impressive standard, a multi-part Terminator Captain, a Terminator Chaplain, and five regular multi-part Terminators.

You also get a new Space Marines Terminator transfer sheet, containing 579 transfers. This box will be available only while stocks last.

The greatest Ultramarine besides the Primarch himself, Marneus Calgar is equally potent a warrior on the battlefield as he is a leader in the command bunker. While he often deploys in an artificer-crafted suit of Gravis armour, he has also been known to still wear the ancient Armour of Antilochus. This relic Terminator armour suit incorporates the Gauntlets of Ultramar – and Calgar operates it with enough agility that he can join almost any infantry squad the Ultramarines choose to field in battle.

Marneus Calgar

No longer leading the Second Company, Cato Sicarius has taken up perhaps an even more prestigious role – the commander of the Ultramarines’ honoured Victrix Guard. His skill with his trusted Talassarian tempest blade lets him fight in three distinct ways during close combat, each one tailored for a different kind of enemy, be they hordes of chaff or deadly champions. This multi-part plastic miniature comes with two head options – one shouting, and one stoically observing the battlefield.

Defend your heroes and champions with the legendary Victrix Honour Guard, a band of veteran Ultramarines chosen to safeguard the Chapter’s officers with their lives in the heat of battle. Each kit builds three Victrix Guard with interchangeable heads, arms and greaves, with the option of building one as a Chapter Champion armed with blades of honour, and one as a Chapter Ancient carrying a massive Banner of Macragge. Victrix Guard can be deployed as a unit of six, and as such two boxes will contain enough parts to build either six regular squad members or four – with unique combinations of leg and arm poses – plus the Chapter Champion and Chapter Ancient.

Lead your kabals on a vicious realspace raid with the new multi-part plastic Archon, bristling with options to customize your merciless commander. Each kit comes with two torso options, two collars, a choice of blast pistol, splinter pistol or iconic soul trap for your right arm choice, a choice of agoniser, huskblade or master-crafted power weapon for the left arm, and three different heads, so you can create the Archon of your dreams – or nightmares – to reap a healthy harvest of captives for the arenas.

Chaos Space Marines Repacks are three kits previously seen in Kill Team will now be available in Warhammer 40,000 packaging. The Chaos Space Marine Legionaries builds a unit of 10 fearsome Heretic Astartes with 18 head options, 22 interchangeable shoulder pads, an assortment of special and heavy weapons, and enough parts to equip the squad for either ranged or melee combat. The box also comes with a Chaos Space Marines transfer sheet.

The Traitor Guardsmen kit builds 10 scrappy warriors including parts for a squad Sergeant with either a chainsword, close combat weapon, or power sword, and a choice of corrupted pistols. Up to three Traitor Guardsmen can be assembled with one of the following weapons: grenade launcher, sniper rifle, plasma gun, meltagun, or flamer.

Also available is the Traitor Enforcer with their Ogryn bodyguard, lending discipline and punching power to units they join.

Da Red Gobbo’s Tinboy is here to celebrate the season. Christmas is coming, and Da Red Gobbo is back to his usual antics – delivering explosive gifts to anyone foolish enough to leave their chimneys open. This time he’s riding onto the scene in a clanking mechanical Tinboy that looks suspiciously like a Vostroyan soldier, and woe betide any who try to stop him from distributing festive cheer to all the good boys and girls of the 41st Millennium. This miniature will only be available while stocks last, so make sure to get yours post-haste!

The faceless regiments of the Death Korps of Krieg are unrelenting in their pursuit of victory, and they’ll need to double down on their die-hard determination in The Relentless Dead by Steve Lyons – the next Death Korps novel after Dead Men Walking captured the bleak horror of life in a Krieg trench line.

Colonel Graven of the 401st Krieg Regiment has been tasked with finding a missing inquisitor in an endless warren of bone caverns wracked by Chaos plagues, but the dead are stirring, and down in the labyrinthine darkness his kill team comes face to face with unspeakable horrors. Adding to it all, the colonel has ghosts of his own to battle, and his lingering doubt could be the death of him.

It’s coming in paperback, eBook, and audiobook editions. For all of their firepower and limitless numbers, the true strength of the Astra Militarum lies in the courage of its Guardsmen, as ordinary men and women stand up to the unimaginable horrors of the 41st Millennium day after day – and win. Death and Duty celebrates the valour that keeps the Imperium from sliding into chaos.

Death and Duty

Double Eagle and Interceptor City by Dan Abnett return in paperback editions. Double Eagle finds the planet of Enothis on the brink of ruin as Chaos forces sweep across its beleaguered surface, and the elite fighter pilots of the Phantine XX are the only ones who can turn the tide – so long as they can avoid becoming the Chaos ace Khrel Kas Obarkon’s next kill tally.

Two decades after the events of Double Eagle, a veteran pilot of the Phantine Air Corps is forced out of retirement when the hive city of Vesperus comes under attack in the sequel Interceptor City. Bree Jagdea is none too pleased to be back in the fray after a cosy life piloting supply transports, especially now that she’s been seconded to the infamous Circus 66 squadron – notorious for their death-defying missions and lethal interceptions through Vesperus’ rat runs.

Double Eagle and Interceptor City

Review: Freeway Fighter #1

While I never played any of the legendary Fighting Fantasy series of gamebooks created by Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson in 1982, I remember Freeway Fighter being somewhere on the shelves of one of the comic/game shops I worked at during my teens and early 20s. My introduction to Livingstone and Jackson’s worldbuilding with Games Workshop and its numerous games, but Freeway Fighter stood out during its release by deviating from the usual mix of orcs, goblins and cave-trolls. The series went on to sell over 18 million copies worldwide and is translated in over 30 languages.

35 years later, we’re getting another chance to drive in that classic setting with a new comic series being released May 17, 2017, written by Andi Ewington and Livingstone, with art by Simon Coleby and Len O’Grady and publishing by Titan Comics.

Former I-400 Driver Bella De La Rosa is one of the 15% – living every day as if it were her last. Now, eighteen months after the collapse of civilization, faced with a new world order where violence and chaos rule the Freeway, she must hone her racing skills and survive any way she can!

The first issue is all set up introducing us to De La Rosa and then jumping ahead post collapse as she drives to survive. It’s a solid start in world building allowing readers to slowly learn about the world they’re thrust in to slowly teasing out just enough to get us to come back more. Ewington and Livingstone together have put together a first issue that feels familiar, but still very entertaining. Normally this world setting is fueled by macho male leads with women acting in a subserviant role. Their choice of Bella De La Rosa as the hero around which this series rotates is brilliant in that it adds in the excellent story choice made in Mad Max: Fury Road one that flipped the formula in some ways. The two writers give us a nod and wink of what we can expect by doing so and fills in a gap that so far no one has really picked up on, the gear head apocalypse story with some girl power acting as nitrous boost. That simple decision is one of many that makes the series stand out.

Coleby and O’Grady on art deliver a visually solid story with enough detail for us to sus out what might have happened in the months since collapse. Materials laying about, the design of vehicles, clothes being worn, those visuals all help tell the story and fill in gaps that haven’t been spelled out yet.

Freeway Fighter #1 feels like the start of a badass story that takes the original roleplaying game and infuses it with other elements that have been added to the genre since. Strap in for an entertaining ride.
