Review: Adventures of the Super Sons #1

Check out the lost and secret adventures of Damian Wayne (Robin) and Jon Kent (Superboy) in this flashback miniseries that takes a deep dive into the bombastic bromance between the sons of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes. Check out the lost and secret adventures of Damian Wayne (Robin) and Jon Kent (Superboy) in this flashback miniseries that takes a deep dive into the bombastic bromance between the sons of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes. It’s an epic dual storyline that transcends current events, as Superboy and Robin find themselves targets of an interstellar team of young badasses called the Gang.

I loved Super Sons. The comic series was a breathe of fresh air. It mixed action, humor, with a childlike sense of fun. And fun is the name of the game as we got to experience Damian’s cold outlook on life mixed with the wide eyed naivete of Jonathan. The two are so far apart, opposites, and in that they’re the perfect team playing off of each other so well. Damian’s seriousness mixed with Jon’s sense of excitement and fun created a combination that was impossible to not enjoy. For me, it was infectious.

Luckily, we’re getting more of the two with Adventures of the Super Sons that has them teaming up again in this “lost story” and coming up against a group of villains that feels so perfect in so many ways. The two battle a villain and get you into their pattern of things. There’s lots of fun as to two battle evil, and each other to some extent. There’s a large dose of humor that adds to the excitement and entertainment of it all, writer Peter J. Tomasi makes sure to keep it all going with a grin. It’s all a build up to reset the status quo in a way and introduce new readers before we’re introduced to the bad guys they’ll be facing and those bad guys are awesome. While some may roll their eyes, I smiled, laughed, and got super excited for the Super Sons.

Part of that excitement is due to the art of Carlo Barberi, inks by Art Thibert, and color by Protobunker, along with lettering by Rob Leigh. The art has an energy about it that matches Tomasi’s writing. The color, the panels, the focus, there’s an excitement about it all that matches the youthful leads. The designs are fantastic and Barberi’s style is a personal favorite of mine. The combination of art and story just creates an energy about it all.

And I think that’s the greatest strength of this issue, and the previous series, it remembers these are kids. The story treats them as kids, doing things like running off to get popcorn in the middle of battle. They go back and forth, like kids. The art style feels young and full of energy. It’s a complete package that knows what it is from story through the art. And because of that, it’s beyond fun.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Adventures of the Super Sons #1 (DC Comics) – Superboy and Robin are back in this new series and we have new villains that feel so appropriate. The last volume was fantastic and the interaction of these two make this series so much fun to read.

Arab of the Future Graphic Memoir Vol. 3 (MacMillan) – The third volume of Riad Sattouf’s graphic memoir of his childhood in the Middle East. The third volume covers 1985-1987 and his mother’s want to move to France leaving his father torn between family and traditions.

Captain America #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was fantastic for this brand new volume written by Ta-Nehisi Coates with art by Leinel Francis Yu. We’re psyched to see where this all goes from there.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #2 (Marvel) – It’s a cosmic road trip to see if there’s such a thing as predetermined destiny.

Dark Ark #9 (AfterShock Comics) – This new take on the Bible tale of Noah has been amazing with every issue. A fantastic infusion of horror.

DC Super Hero Girls: Out of the Bottle (DC Comics) – The latest graphic novel in the kids comic series focuses on mental health and making your own comics!

Death of the Inhumans #2 (Marvel) – The first issue surprised us as to how good it was. We’re excited to read more of this series which we… well not sure what we expected. This is far more than a mini-series, this feels like a major event that will have a big impact going forward.

Infinity Wars #1 (Marvel) – The Prime issue was good and we’re excited to see where the cosmic end of the Marvel Universe is heading.

Leviathan #1 (Image Comics) – John Layman and Nick Pittara’s new series about some dingbats who summon a giant monster from hell.

Mister Miracle #10 (DC Comics) – This series has been amazing and the tension only seems to be getting greater with each issue. This is comic of the year material.

Project Superpowers #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Can superheroes still save the day? Written by Rob Williams with art by Sergio Davila, the series seems to explore if the heroes of the past have relevance in the modern world.

The Raid #1 (Titan Comics) – Based on the cult film, we’re excited to see how it translates on the printed page.

Robots vs. Princesses #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The title says it all with this one.

The Seeds #1 (Dark Horse/Berger Books) – A four issue mini-series from Berger Books from Ann Nocenti and David Aja follows a journalist who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime which if it’s revealed will destroy the last hope of a dying world.

WWE Attitude Era 2018 Special #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Head back to what many consider one the best eras for wrestling.
