Comics and graphic novels have come into their own as subjects worthy of—indeed, demanding—attention from academia. Historians and cultural theorists teach courses, hold conferences, and publish books on various aspects of sequential art, and colleges and universities teach courses in comics as literature and social history as well as how to make them. Here to give an overview of various ideas about and approaches to comics studies are a cross section of comics scholars and teachers, including Diana Schutz (longtime Dark Horse executive editor and instructor at Portland Community College), Shannon Wheeler (creator of Too Much Coffee Man and instructor at Portland State College of the Arts), Susan Kirtley (director of rhetoric and composition at Portland State University; author of Lynda Barry: Girlhood through the Looking Glass), and Jon Holt (assistant professor of Japanese literature and manga at Portland State University). The panel is moderated by Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch, Disguised as Clark Kent).

Spike & Mike’s Festival of Animation To Make Wizard World Debut At Portland Comic Con

Animation shorts are among the most creative and entertaining film genres. Now fans in the Pacific Northwest will have the opportunity to enjoy three new screenings at the award-winning Spike & Mike’s Festival of Animation during Wizard World Portland Comic Con on Friday, January 23 (6-9 p.m.) and Saturday, January 24 (7-10 p.m.).

The unique presentations during the event include “Spike & Mike’s 30th Anniversary Celebration”(11+ recommended), “Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation” (18+ Only) and the “Pop Culture Animation Festival” (18+ Only).

Featured within the three Spike and Mike screenings are over 60 award-winning animated short films from 11 different countries. Highlights include Oscar, Cannes and Sundance festival winners, videos banned from Europe, and spikes personal best from the fest.

Spike & Mike’s Festival of Animation requires a separate ticket purchase ($20 for Wizard World Portland Comic Con attendees; $30 for non-attendees), which includes a free “Spike and Mike Sick and Twisted” DVD.

Spike and Mike’s and Wizard World will conduct a similar event at Sacramento Comic Con, June 1921 at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Wizard World, Skybound Reveal The Walking Dead Exclusive Variant Cover for Portland Comic Con

Portland Comic Con The Walking DeadWizard World and Skybound have revealed that Eisner Award winning artist Steve Lieber will draw the second in a yearlong series of Limited Edition Exclusive Variant Covers of The Walking Dead #1 comic, to be provided free to all full-price attendees at Wizard World Portland Comic Con, January 23-25.

The exclusive The Walking Dead #1 edition will be produced in extremely limited quantities and is available at registration to fans at the Oregon Convention Center only while supplies last. VIP attendees will receive an additional black & white sketch version of the comic.

Lieber, whose publishers include DC Comics, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, Scholastic and many others, The Portland resident has worked on characters like Batman, Superman, Hellboy and Road to Perdition, but he’s best known as the artist of the graphic novel Whiteout and its Eisner-winning sequel, Whiteout: Melt, which were adapted by Warner Brothers as a movie starring Kate Beckinsale. He recently completed two Alabaster graphic novels at Dark Horse, and is currently illustrating Superior Foes of Spider-Man for Marvel.

The artists for future books will be announced as they are selected. A similar series in 2013 featuring exclusives of The Walking Dead #1 proved to be wildly popular with fans.

Stars of The Walking Dead TV series scheduled to attend Wizard World Portland Comic Con include Steven Yeun, Sarah Wayne Callies, Michael Cudlitz, Josh McDermitt, Michael Rooker and Jon Bernthal. Other top celebrities on hand include Stephen Amell, Evan Peters, Tyler Posey, Karl Urban, Ming-Na Wen, WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan and many others.

Adams, Totino Tedesco, Claremont, Haspiel Headline Comics Creators At Wizard World Portland Comic Con

gotham penguinNeal Adams, Julian Totino Tedesco, Chris Claremont and Dean Haspiel headline the roster of more than 130 top comics artists and writers attending Wizard World Portland Comic Con, January 23-25 at the Oregon Convention Center. The event is the second on the 2015 schedule for Wizard World, and the third annual visit to Portland.

Other standouts in Artist Alley include Ethan Van Sciver, Arthur Suydam, Kurt Busiek, Kevin Maguire, Paul Gulacy, Joëlle Jones, Christos Gage, Colleen Doran and Michael Golden.

In addition, all full-price Wizard World Portland Comic Con attendees (weekend 3-day, VIP and single-day admissions) will receive a limited edition exclusive variant cover The Walking Dead comic, drawn by one of Wizard World’s talented artist guests. Comics will be issued at registration while supplies last and VIP attendees will receive an additional black & white sketch version.

Reedus, Amell, Peters, Tyler Posey Among Top Celebrities at Wizard World Portland, Jan. 23-25

arrowWizard World continues its 2015 schedule with its third trip to the Oregon Convention Center at Wizard World Portland Comic Con, January 23-25. Norman Reedus, Stephen Amell, Evan Peters, Tyler Posey, Lena Headey and the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. duo of Ming-Na Wen and Brett Dalton headline the roster of celebrity guests scheduled to attend the pop culture extravaganza, the second event on Wizard World’s calendar of 24 Comic Cons in 2015.

Fans of The Walking Dead are in for a particular treat, as, in addition to Reedus, numerous other stars of the smash hit series will attend the show. Michael Cudlitz, who plays “Sgt. Abraham Ford,” Sarah Wayne Callies, Steven Yeun, Josh McDermitt, Michael Rooker and Scott Wilson are all scheduled.

Amell, Cudlitz, Dalton, Headey, McDermitt, Peters, Posey, Reedus and Yeun will appear on Saturday and Sunday, while Wen will attend on Saturday only. Callies, Rooker and Wilson will appear all three days.

Other well-known Wizard World Portland Comic Con guests include Katie Cassidy, Bruce Campbell, WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan and Divas The Bella Twins, Debbie Gibson, Yaphet Kotto, Eliza Dushku, Alan Tudyk, Jason David Frank, Lou Ferrigno, Ksenia Solo and Giancarlo Esposito.

Zenescope’s 2014 Age of Darkness Tour

zenescopeZenescope Entertainment has announced its tour dates for the 2014 Age of Darkness TourAge of Darkness encompasses their Grimm Fairy Tales series which features classic characters and locales (Wonderland, Neverland, Oz, Robyn Hood, Red Riding Hood, Van Helsing, Captain Hook, the Dark Queen, etc) that have all been operating in their own titles. Age of Darkness books bring these characters together in a modern setting for a story that will have an impact the Zenescope titles across the board. The culmination will be in Grimm Fairy Tales #100. Let the countdown begin!

Award-Winning Publisher Dark Horse At Wizard World Portland Comic Con

Dark Horse, bridging the gap between the best licensed and original comics work from the industry’s top talent, will make their debut at Wizard World Portland Comic Con, January 24-26 at the Oregon Convention Center. The Oregon-based Premier Publisher, which produces such notable titles as Tomb Raider, Mass Effect, Halo, Terminator, Serenity, Star Wars, Hellboy, and Conan, will be appearing at Portland Comic Con for the first time.

Located in nearby Milwaukie, Ore., Dark Horse will feature several of its top creators signing at its booth including Christos Gage, Eric Powell and more! Dark Horse will host three panels throughout the show, with details to be announced shortly!

Additionally, fans will enjoy special exclusive items produced by Dark Horse and available for the first time at Wizard World Portland Comic Con! Visitors to the Dark Horse booth (#201) can check out new and classic offerings as well as giveaways throughout the event.

Marvel & Wizard World are Doing What for VIPs?

Marvel and Wizard World have announced a program by which VIP attendees at each of the 16 scheduled 2014 Wizard World Comic Con pop culture conventions will receive exclusive variant covers of the best Marvel titles, beginning with Miracleman #1 at Portland Comic Con which takes place January 24-26, and Miracleman #2 at New Orleans Comic Con, which runs February 7-9. The first two limited-edition books, with covers illustrated by comics legend and Eisner Award Hall of Famer Neal Adams, feature interlocking covers, and will be available in both color and black & white sketch editions.

The colored version of Miracleman #1 will be limited to 3,000 copies and provided free at registration to all Wizard World VIP attendees, including any celebrity VIP packages. The Black & White sketch version is limited to just 2,500 copies and will be available for sale at the Wizard World Store on the convention floor. Quantities per purchase may be limited.

Adams is scheduled to be on site at each event to sign copies (autograph fees may apply). Leading professional comic grader CGC will also be on hand to accept books for grading and Signature Series.

Reedus, Shatner, Lee, Punk Top Portland Comic Con Celebrity Roster

Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead, Star Trek‘s Captain Kirk” William Shatner, WWE Superstar CM Punk and Eisner Award Hall of Famer Stan Lee are among the top celebrities scheduled to attend Wizard World Portland Comic Con, January 24-26 at the Oregon Convention Center.  The standout roster will also include Ron Perlman of Hellboy, Robert Englund, Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead, pop culture icons Billy Dee Williams and Adam West and many others. It is the first of 15 events currently scheduled in the 2014 series produced by Wizard World, Inc. and will also feature a top-drawer collection of well-known artists and writers and a variety of activities, exhibitors and special attractions.

Reedus, Perlman, Englund and Campbell will appear on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25-26. Lee will attend on Friday and Saturday, Shatner and Punk will appear on Friday, and Williams and West are scheduled for all three days.

This year marks the second Wizard World Portland Comic Con following a successful debut in Feb. 2013.

Superstar comics creators scheduled to attend include Eisner Award Hall of Famer Neal Adams, Mike Zeck, Jim Cheung, Rafa Sandoval, Humberto Ramos, George Pérez and dozens of others.

Other celebrities on the Portland Comic Con roster include “The Walking Dead” stars Jon Bernthal, Laurie Holden and Michael Rooker, Jason David Frank, Burt Ward, Elvira, Peter Mayhew, Linda Blair, Nicholas Brendon, Ray Park and Grant Wilson.
