Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

MercenarySea-01-coverThis week has a good mix of releases, a little something for everyone, and the Graphic Policy team is here to tell you what you should check out when you head to your comic shop!

Andrew’s Picks

TOP PICK: The Mercenary Sea #1 (Image) – It is 1938, South Seas Japan, and a refitted German U-boat carrying expats, mercenaries, and treasure hunters does whatever it takes to stay afloat and gain loot. Another Image first issue that looks interesting (and one of two WWII comics I’ll be reading this week).

The Royals: Masters of War #1 (Vertigo) – 1940 British royalty with superpowers? You’d think the wealthy and powerful have already won life’s lottery, but I guess you’re nothing unless you have superhuman abilities. Vertigo’s latest historical fiction piece looks like a good read.

Star Wars #14 (Dark Horse) – Vader has finished his rogue mission to uncover the identity of a traitorous imperial officer and is now back at the Emperor’s side to do his bidding. I’m still depressed about the potential for this series to end once Marvel takes over the SW comic license…but I’ll push through it.

Winter Soldier Bitter March #1 (Marvel) – After reading Brubaker’s Winter Soldier series, I’ll take whatever Marvel puts out in the lead up to the theatrical release. In this limited series the Soviets unleash a brainwashed Bucky Barnes.

TOP TRADE/OGN: Lobster Johnson Vol. 3 Satan Smells a Rat (Dark Horse) – I’m pretty sure I’ve expressed how much of an LJ fanboy I am, but to reiterate: 1930s pulp from the creator of Hellboy? Yes please. This is the third Lobster trade out and I hope they never stop coming.

Brett’s Picks

TOP PICK: The Bunker #1 (Oni Press) – The hit digital series is finally in print for even more folks to see. To describe the series would be to ruin the secrets of it, but this is the best of the television series Lost in comic form.

City: The Mind in the Machine #1 (Darby Pop/IDW) – A series that directly comments on today’s technology and surveillance state. It’s relevant and timely in the subject. It’ll be interesting to see how everything shakes out as the series progresses.

The Fuse #1 (Image) – One of two new series this week from the publisher. This one is a cop murder mystery aboard a space station. So far, it’s a great read with a cool premise.

Letter 44 #4 (Oni Press) – One of two Charles Soule written comics on the list. We start to find out what is in space while the new President must deal with political treachery.

She-Hulk #1 (Marvel) – The other Charles Soule written book. Soule takes on She-Hulk putting the spotlight as to her career as a lawyer and a superhero. The fact that Soule is a lawyer himself juggling his superhero like writing career means we’ll get an honest and entertaining look into She-Hulk’s life.

TOP TRADE/OGN: Bravest Warriors Vol. 2 (KaBOOM!/BOOM! Studios) – The hilarious comic series is collected in a second volume. Entertaining for kids and adults alike!

Preview: Bucky Barnes Strikes in Winter Soldier: The Bitter March #1!

Bucky Barnes has been called many things – Avenger, Invader, and even Captain America. But to many, he’s known by only one name – The Winter Solider! A name that carries a bloody legacy reaching deep into the pages of history. And today Marvel is proud to present your first look at Winter Soldier: The Bitter March #1 – a new limited series from blockbuster writer Rick Remender and fan-favorite artist Roland Boschi!

At the height of the Cold War, S.H.I.E.L.D. sends their top operative, agent Ran Shen, deep into enemy territory to retrieve two Nazi scientists that could be the key to winning the war. But they aren’t the only ones who want these high value scientists. The Soviet Union have unleashed their most ruthless agent – The Winter Soldier! His mission: acquire the scientists by any means necessary – or kill them before they fall into enemy hands!

In a release, Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said:

In the late 1960s, a S.H.I.E.L.D. mission gone wrong begat the creation of the Iron Nail, the foe whose schemes and strategies are bedeviling Captain America in the present in his own series. Winter Soldier: The Bitter March tells the story of that fateful mission, and the events that set S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Ran Shen onto the path that would result in him becoming the dreaded Iron Nail.
