Review: We Live: Age of The Palladions – White #1

We Live: Age of The Palladions - White #1

The first volume of We Live is utterly brilliant. A story about a brother and sister’s trek to get off the planet was a tear jerker. I literal one. Each issue I found myself hit with emotions as these two adorable kids made their way against insurmountable odds. Then we got to the finale and were delivered a twist on a massive level I didn’t see coming at all. Add in amazing art and you had a series that was can’t miss. You can imagine how excited I was to dive into We Live: Age of The Palladions – White #1, the second volume and one half of the debut issues this week, along with “Black”. I’m happy to say both are a solid debut and the heart is still there.

Inaki Miranda and Roy Miranda are back to continue the adventure which goes from a tale of survival in a journey to just a tale of survival. The Palladions are now humanity’s last hope as the monsters have evolved and besieged the various metropolises which are protected by energy shields. The problem? The energy keeps getting cut which leads to some difficult decisions.

We Live: Age of The Palladions – White #1 focuses things more at the soldier level. The comic is a bit more from the average person’s perspective as opposed to the more superhero aspects of its “Black” counterpart. In this issue the focus is getting some food as we learn more of the hurdles everyone is running into. “White” feels more like a solid supplemental story to “Black”‘s main story. The two together tell a solid story that feels like a complete world.

But what made the first volume so good was the heart within. I’m not joking that each issue felt like a gut punch. This new volume keeps that going with a touching moment between Tala and Hototo. It’s the human side of a superhero tale.

Inaki Miranda provides the art with color by Eva De La Cruz and lettering by Dave Sharpe. The art looks fantastic as expected. Unlike “Black”, “White” is much more soldier on the ground. With that, we get to see more of the destroyed surroundings and the danger lurking. You can easily imagine this as a first person video game that’s full of detail and areas you want to explore. That says so much about the art and the terrific world that it conveys.

We Live: Age of The Palladions – White #1 has its bumps much like it’s companion release. Some of the story is a little choppy again with a focus on the needs and a world falling apart that the reader is thrown into. There’s a video game feel to it, like you’ve been dropped into a story and mission already in progress. But, it does a decent job of keeping things focused and narrowed down to the mission. How it all comes together should be interesting and something to be excited about.

We Live: Age of The Palladions - Black #1

The first volume of We Live is utterly brilliant. A story about a brother and sister’s trek to get off the planet was a tear jerker. I literal one. Each issue I found myself hit with emotions as these two adorable kids made their way against insurmountable odds. Then we got to the finale and were delivered a twist on a massive level I didn’t see coming at all. Add in amazing art and you had a series that was can’t miss. The Palladions are now humanity’s last hope as the monsters have evolved and besieged the various metropolises which are protected by energy shields. The problem? The energy keeps getting cut which leads to some difficult decisions.

We Live: Age of The Palladions – Black #1 is Pacific Rim with an Ultraman twist. Instead of giant robots, it’s superheroes fighting giant monsters. The city to protect is there. The wall is there. The military force is there. It’s all a bit familiar in that way. But it’s still good. As battles begin you can hear the riff of the guitar from the Pacific Rim them start jamming as the Palladions do their thing.

But what made the first volume so good was the heart within. I’m not joking that each issue felt like a gut punch. This new volume keeps that going with an opening that is just ominous but also so touching. You dread what’s to come but at the same time the love and caring between Tala and Hototo is so amazing. It’s the human side of a superhero tale.

Inaki Miranda provides the art with color by Eva De La Cruz and lettering by Dave Sharpe. The art looks fantastic as expected. The series hasn’t lost a touch at all and Miranda’s style shifts from the previous volume’s genre style to this perfectly. It has a flair to it with colors that pop with lettering that deliver the exclamation point to the emotional punch. It’s awesome art in every way with a style that feels familiar and all its own at the same time.

We Live: Age of The Palladions – Black #1 has its bumps. Some of the story is a little choppy with talk of portable beacons, shields, and charging, but it all comes together nicely. If the first volume was a story of brother and sister’s survival, this is the fight back as we get to see powered up superheroes kick some monster butt.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

We Live: Age of Palladions Black #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Broken Eye #1 (Scout Comics) – A young man can see the past and gets pulled into a conspiracy when he finds a hand floating in the river.

Captain Carter #1 (Marvel) – Captain Carter has always had fans but now so many more after a star making turn in Marvel Studios’ What If…? It’ll be interesting to see what this series delivers and how much of the center stage Marvel plans on putting her.

Devil’s Reign #5 (Marvel) – Was this issue spoiled in Daredevil: Women Without Fear #3? You’ll have to read it and find out! It’s been a solid event so far and here’s hoping it nails it in the landing.

Little Monsters #1 (Image Comics) – Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen telling the story of a group of child vampires? Yeah, we’re in for this one.

Naomi Season Two #1 (DC Comics) – Naomi has blown up with her on show on The CW. The first volume of this series was fantastic and we’re beyond excited to see where this one goes now she’s a member of the Justice League.

Perhapanauts: Triangle #1 (Scout Comics) – It’s a brand-new time traveling adventure!

Punisher #1 (Marvel) – The Punisher has been a bit mixed in direction over the years and the latest has him as a major player in the Hand. Will this one work for the character?

Radiant Red #1 (Image Comics) – The world of Radiant Black expands further with a five-issue miniseries.

Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #1 (Marvel) – We’ve gotten to see Spider-Man around the multiverse. It’s Spider-Gwen’s turn!

We Live: Age of Palladions Black #1/We Live: Age of Palladions White #1 (AfterShock) – We Live’s first volume was fantastic. It’s six years later and we’re beyond excited to return to this world. It has a high bar to reach but we’re confident both of these issues will be solid entertainment.
