Baltimore Comic Con 2013: Dynamite Announces The Art of Dejah Thoris and the Worlds of Mars Art Book

Dynamite has announced the December release of The Art of Dejah Thoris and the Worlds of Mars, a hardcover collection featuring over 250 pages of full color artwork from some of the finest illustrators of modern fantasy comics.  Depicting cover artwork and pin-ups from Dynamite’s exceedingly popular line of Warlord of Mars and Dejah Thoris comic books, this magnificent art book counts industry heavyweights Alex Ross, J. Scott Campbell, Art Adams, Francesco Francavilla, and Joe Jusko among its many contributing talents.

Since the first serialized adventures in 1912 of the Martian Princess Dejah Thoris and her beloved hero, John Carter, science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts have dreamed of the faraway Red Planet (known to its inhabitants as Barsoom), its wondrous sights and monstrous perils.  In hundreds of full-color illustrations, the finest artists of modern fantasy have brought the dying world of Mars to life, depicting scenes of brutal conflict with alien beasts, quiet moments overlooking Martian wastes, and enticing visions of an exotic princess at her most intimate.

This magnificent collection of illustrations include all cover artwork to date from Dynamite’s variety of Warlord of Mars-related comics, including Warlord of Mars, Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris, Warriors of Mars, Dejah Thoris and the White Apes of Mars, Warlord of Mars: Fall of Barsoom, and Dejah Thoris and the Green Men of Mars.

Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous series, which initially began publication in serialized form within the pages of All-Story Magazine in February 1912. It is also Burroughs’ first novel, predating his Tarzan stories. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the story is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction.

Edwin Lester Arnold’s Gullivar of Mars novel, originally published as Lieutenant Gullivar Jones: His Vacation in 1905, bears a number of striking similarities to Burroughs’ Princess of Mars. Both Gullivar and Burroughs’ protagonist John Carter are Southern United States soldiers who arrive on Mars by apparently magical means (magic carpet in the case of the former, astral projection in that of the latter) and have numerous adventures there, including falling in love with Martian princesses. Gullivar is a more hapless character, however, paling beside the heroic and accomplished Carter. Gullivar, in contrast, stumbles in and out of trouble and never quite succeeds in mastering it.

Robert Napton has written hundreds of comics. He is currently writing WARLORD OF MARS: THE FALL OF BARSOOM for DYNAMITE. In 2008, he adapted Terry Brooks’ DARK WRAITH OF SHANNARA as a graphic novel and wrote the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.
