Review: Book Of Death: The Fall Of X-O Manowar

bodxoAfter hundreds of years in exile on an alien planet, Aric of Dacia has returned to an unfamiliar Earth, only to find a planet that doesn’t remember or want him. Will Aric of Dacia finally find happiness in the aftermath of the apocalypse?

As the final one shot tie in to Valiant‘s superb summer event series Book Of DeathThe Fall Of X-O Manowar is a fitting send off to one of the publishers’ most powerful characters, and it’s also a brilliant lead into the finale, Book Of Death #4 that’s due out on the 28th of October.

Aric of Daciathe man who wears the X-O Manowar armour is a man out of time. After being taken from Earth as a slave in the fifth century by an alien race, Aric returned to an unfamiliar Earth; escaping slavery with the help of a sacred artifact, and most powerful weapon, the X-O Manowar armour. Upon his return he realized that during his time in space centuries had passed on Earth, and he returned to find a planet that didn’t remember, or want him. At least, not at first.

X-O Manowar was initially a character that I felt was a little foolish. A mix of sci-fi and history that, I thought, shouldn’t work. I realized how wrong I was when I picked up issue #38. I’ve enjoyed every issue since then, and this one shot is no exception to that.

As the final chapter to the life of Aric of Dacia, this is a great story; there’s a sense with Fall Of X-O Manowar that really feels like an epilogue to the life of a great character. Is it required reading to enjoy the main Book Of Death series? No, but then none of the tie-in one shots (or the hard to find Legends Of The Geomancer) are required to get the full picture. What this is, however, is a well constructed comic that should be read by any fans of the main series.

I enjoyed Book Of Death: The Fall Of X-O Manowar, I hope that if you do read it, you do as well.

Review: Book Of Death #4

bod4cAn evil Geomancer has torn the world asunder. The dark puppet master pulling the strings has been unmasked. And the Valiant Universe as we know it is being torn apart. The end is here!

I could praise the writing and artwork in this final issue, but I’ve been doing that all series long, and I feel I may be beating a dead horse by doing that – that being said, though, Robert Vendetti has written the most brilliantly suited final chapter to this arc that you could hope for, and between Robert Gill an Doug Braithwaite, the art is all I could have hoped for. I honestly could talk about both the writing and art work so much more (they’re both fantastic, and have been over the entire series), but to do so I would stray dangerously close to the spoiler territory that I want to avoid.

Because of that the review of Book Of Death #4 as a comic will probably be shorter than most other reviews that I’ve written lately.

The finale to Valiant‘s four part summer brings the arc to a close nicely; if you haven’t red this series, then either pick up the collected edition when it’s released, or the four single issues if you can find them – although be aware that if you do want to read Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior without reading this series there may be the odd spoiler for Book Of Death contained within Wrath; and if you do skip Book Of Death then you’ll miss out on the best event comic from any publisher from 2015, which would be a shame.

The main Book Of Death series was fantastic, and I’m saying that as somebody who knew relatively little about Valiant‘s characters (although full disclosure, I always like the idea of The Eternal Warrior, so with this series focusing on him more than the other major Valiant characters probably explains my enthusiasm for the series). The four tie in comics easilly available have, for the most part, also been very good – the one comic I wasn’t a huge fan of was because of my lack of familiarity with the characters involved (Book Of Death: Fall Of Harbinger). Valiant promised a tale for the ages, and they have delivered with the main series.

Book Of Death #4 is a great way to bring a close to an event that took me by surprise with the first issue (I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did), and the consistent quality of both the writing and art never let up from that opening salvo.

Simply put, this is a story you must read.

Review: Ninjak #8

NINJAK_008_COVER-A_SUAYANNinjak goes toe-to-toe with the brains of the Shadow Seven operation: the deadly and very intelligent Fitzy. But as Colin King discovers he has much more in common with this group of thieves and murderers than he’d like, will he be able to hold onto his honor…and his sanity?

The eighth issue of the ongoing monthly Ninjak series continues the story arc that began a couple of issues ago, The Shadow Wars, and also features the back up strip that has been as enjoyable, if not more so, than the main arc – for me at least. The beauty of the main arc is that even three issues in, it’s still just as easy to pick up this issue to jump on board.

The last issue of Ninjak was good, but not quite what I was expecting. This issue was, honestly, pretty much the same. I’m really enjoying the series so far, especially the way in which Matt Kindt is subverting my expectations of  story featuring a character that can be easily expected to have some poetic sword action in between lengthy stealth and spy bits. That’s certainly not to say those things aren’t present in the arc, issue #7 had a rather brutal encounter between Ninjak and his opponent, but we also see just how cerebral Ninjak can be.

It’s a very interesting way of treating a character that could easily slip into the trap of a needlessly violent comic book for no other reason than the main character is a ninja.

This issue spends a lot of time building up Ninjak‘s target, Fitzy, showing us just how deadly and dangerous the man is. The glimpse into his back story felt complete enough for the story’s purpose, but still felt partially incomplete – that is honestly a very minor complaint in the grand scheme of things, however, in an issue that I really enjoyed. Juan Jose Ryp has delivered another brilliantly constructed and detailed piece of art, and I was constantly impressed at how much emotion he was able to convey on Ninjak‘s masked face.

The back up story, The Lost Files, continues to be a highlight for me, and in many ways I’m enjoying seeing this unfold more than the main story. Perhaps because it reminds me of the training scenes Bruce Wayne received in Batman Begins. I’m enjoying finding out how Colin King became the ninja we know and love today. That The Lost Files is being told as a back up story is great; by not devoting two or three full issues to the origin of NinjakValiant are able to use the arc to compliment the main story, feeding us the origin gradually, while at the same time providing a great back up strip to readers.

Ninjak #8 is another solid comic from one of the best publishers around right now. If do want to start reading about Valiant‘s purple clad ninja, then this may not be the best comic to start with – it is in the middle of a story, and while you can certainly pick issue #8 up and enjoy it as the first comic you read in the arc, you may want to start with issue #6, as you may pick up some details about The Shadow Wars during the last two issues that’ll allow yo to enjoy the later issues a bit more. Either way, the story arc is worth reading.

Review: X-O Manowar #41

XO_041_COVER-A_SANDOVALWith a conspiracy tearing the Vine and Humanity’s tenuous relationship apart, Aric of Dacia takes matter into his own hands to bring peace – but at a dire cost. But when you don’t know whom to trust, you must trust yourself.

As the current four part arc, Exodus, reaches its  conclusion next month, X-O Manowar #41 scribe Robert Venditti turns up the heat in this penultimate issue. With the Vine refugees that have recently landed in Nevada in a desperate attempt to seek sanctuary from the man wearing the X-O Manowar armour, and the military who had come to fend off another potential invasion, the tensions in this issue are heating up to dangerous, almost war inducing levels.

Aric Of Dacia finds himself caught in the middle between the two sides, desperately trying to enforce a truce between the people of earth and the alien race who once held him captive.

It’s an interesting position to put a character in, especially the time displaced Visigoth wearing the X-O Manowar armour. A man who has given his word that he will try to enforce a peace between the two sides, but with the way the story has progressed so far, that may prove to be harder than Aric expected. With the way that Exodus has been going, it’s certainly shaping up to have the line wide implications that Valiant have been suggesting in their solicitations.

This story has so far taken place within a relatively short period of time (maybe a few hours or a day at most as near as I can tell), with some wonderful tension building within the individual comics that has sent Exodus rushing to the inevitable conclusion. The action is certainly present, but the way in which Robert Venditti is pounding the more political nature of the encounter into the comic is, frankly, fantastic. Venditti is joined again this issue by artist Rafa Sandoval, who delivers another superb issue here; his layouts and panel design tell as much of the story as his artwork describes the scene.

This has been a fantastic story arc so far, one that has focused less on balls to the wall Micheal Bay like action, and instead focuses on a more cerebral story that has yet to rely overmuch on explosions and fight scenes (although there has been enough action over the past few issues to highlight the power wielded by Aric) which is something I’m excited about. I’m not going to say much more about the story as I always try to be mindful of just how much I’m giving away for those who are yet to read it, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the arc so far, especially the focus on the relations between humanity, the Vine, and X-O Manowar rather than three comics with nothing but mindless action.

I can’t wait to see where it ends up.

Indie Icons: Armorines #2

Armorines LogoComixology currently has over 75,000 comics and it is now my job to dig through them all and find the strangest, most outrageous, and most fun comics deep within the depths and bring them to you at great danger to my own personal sanity. This week, we follow a small group of elite soldiers called the Armorines, as they look to steal a nuclear core from a submarine. This seems like a pretty straight forward, simple mission, except for all of the mutated shark monsters and a whole lot of bad decisions.Armorines coverWe start our story on a helicopter that’s flying off the coast of Australia, where the crew is frantically screaming for the Armorines to respond. It is also interesting to note, that everyone on the helicopter looks exactly like they are all failed versions of Cyclops who were just not cool enough to be in the X-Men. And that’s saying a lot. If you have awesome eye visors and are still not cool enough to beat out Cyclops, then there’s a problem. (Side note: I’m not a huge fan of Cyclops.) Also, their computers show them nothing more than giant orange and yellow pixels which seems…very useless. But hey, it was the mid 90s, computers were still young and clearly not everyone understood how they worked.

Armorines CyclopsWe soon discover that the reason the Armorines are ignoring Cyclops’ siblings is because, they are busy fighting giant mutated sharks that look like they are decaying in the water. Apparently, they have been hanging out too close to the sunken underwater nuclear sub but, they shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The Armorines have a suit with giant glowing swords and ion cannons that shoot from their arms. They should be fine right? Right?

Armorines Sword and CannonNo. It won’t be alright because the Armorines for some reason brought down a group of divers who decided to put some foam on the top of some tupperware containers and smash it onto their face as a diving mask. They don’t have any useful weapons or protection either but, damn it if they aren’t brave to the point of stupidity. After the Armorines fight off a few sharks, the remainder start to feed on what’s left of the dead. This gives the Armorines and friends the perfect opportunity to enter into the safety of the sunken sub through a large hole in the side. With all of them finally in the ship, they do what any sane person would do in this situation. They leave the ship to go stab some more sharks. The problem is, our friend Tristan forgets his has no stabbing weapons but shows a lot of bravery by playing chicken with one of the mutated monsters.

Armorines Shark CrushThe lesson here guys, is to never play chicken with a shark, especially one mutated by nuclear radiation. And if you do, bring more than bravery to the fight. It’s not as effective as you may have been told. This finally leads to everyone deciding to enter the submarine and stay in the submarine. Lessons are being learned. The team of Armorines quickly splits up, one to grab the nuclear core and another to plant explosives on the ship. Why? No idea. I guess there is other important information on there that they just don’t feel like carrying around and explosives seem like more fun. It’s not a terrible argument.

Before anything else happens, we get a quick cut away to the captain of the warship floating above the Armorines. He is getting word that his men are being eaten by sharks and vows to see reinforcements. He says its time to bring in the special rescue team. It seems like these are a very important unit, who only come when situations are extreme, so I assume these are some tough people. The problem is, the captain never actually sends any help. Or the special rescue team is actually nowhere near the coast of Australia, and they’re still on the flight over while the Armorines are working. This would have actually been a great time for the rescue team to come because, a giant Hammerhead has made this ship his home. And he does not like intruders.

Armorines HammerheadHe also has a very cute mutated stingray best friend which is nice to see. Even mutated creatures need friends. The shark quickly eats a scuba diver, again making me question why they were brought along without an armored suit. The shark then makes the mistake of attacking the Armorine who pokes out his eyes, instantly killing him. Incorrect fact of the week: All of a sharks vital organs are located in its eye and if poked the entire creature dies. A second hammerhead comes and is quickly stabbed. This leads to one of the Armorines deciding it is time to leave the ship even though they haven’t accomplished their mission yet. He quickly learns that there are consequences for slacking off at work when, what appears to be, Mother Brain from Metriod zaps him with a laser and kidnaps them.

Armorines Mother BrainNo one really seems to notice this, as the very next page they are lifting the nuclear core into a transport helicopter above. Then, the most ridiculous thing in this comic, a comic that includes mutant sea creatures and a giant brain like alien ship with tentacles, happens. Four dolphins randomly appear wearing harness and ready to help the divers not quite qualified enough to be Armorines. These dolphins were apparently trained by the Navy for situations just like this. And, while this may seem strange to… well, anyone really, the divers are only shocked because they thought the Navy abandoned the dolphin project a long time ago. It’s never really address why there was a dolphin project in the first place but, I need to hear that story. Hopefully, whenever Hollywood gets a hold of the Armorines license they’ll add that in as a gritty flashback.

Armorines dolphinA few dolphins get needlessly sacrificed but, the divers eventually escape with the help of a few Armorines who have come back to murder a some more sharks before they decide to finally call it a day. Then, we get back to the Armorine that went off to set explosives in the submarine that I completely forgot about because, his job seemed pointless to start with. After seeing how he handles his escape, I’m not surprised they sent him off on a useless mission because he is not good at things. The Armorine leaves the ship but, not before being speared into the submarine by a shark that nuclear radiation has clearly given the skill set of Goldberg.

Armorines SPEARThis destroys his propulsion system but, not his cannon, which he uses to blast the shark through the face, essentially disintegrating it. Now, I may not be a scientist, I may actually have a degree in history, (Yes, history. Leave me alone.) but, I think all of that heavy metal armor he is wearing should drag him to the bottom of the sea. Or, he has incredibly strong legs to overcome the force pulling down on him. It turns out to be the latter as he casually swims to the surface. He did accidentally hit the submarine with his cannon blast though, sending it over the edge of the cliff it was on. He seems pretty distraught about it too, even though it blows up 50 feet further down from where it was originally going to blow up but, I’m not an Armorine so maybe I am missing something. And so, I guess the day was saved? They captured the core, a large amount of innocent men and dolphins dies, and they blew something up. Alright, so they really didn’t save anything but they’ll need to do some saving here soon. Remember that guy captured by the Mother Brain ship? Yeah, here’s where he ended up…

Armorine endIn a room completely filled with corpses. Yup. Welcome to Indie Icons.
