David’s gambling addiction brings him to rock bottom-the lowest point he’s ever hit in life, and it’s made him desperate. But the forbidden fruit of a nefarious opportunity arises… a heist, and one that could finally be the answer to his financial woes.

The thing is, David’s old line of work made him familiar with the nearby NYC subway tunnels, and the perfect man for this particular job. But the path to hell is paved with less-than-legal intentions, and David truly has no idea what he’s signing up for, or the dark rabbit hole he’s about to fall down…

A hard boiled heist series with a supernatural horror twist from the hit Stray Bullets creative team of David & Maria Lapham, exploring how seeking out atonement can lead truly desperate people to the worst places, and make them do the unthinkable.

Underheist #1 delivers a pretty standard heist story

Underheist #1

After his gambling addiction brings David to the lowest point in his life and decimates his personal life, he’d do anything for one last chance at setting things right but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Luckily, he learns of a heist and comes up with the idea of robbing the robbers. Underheist #1 delivers an opening chapter that feels like a pretty standard heist story but teases more.

Written by Maria Lapham and David Lapham, Underheist #1 isn’t a bad debut but also doesn’t quite excite. The teaser for the series promises a “supernatural horror twist” but beyond some minor teases, it doesn’t dive too much into that. Instead, the Laphams focus on David and his being a fuck up. His life is a mess, at least he thinks it is. He has a job. He has someone that loves him. He has a family. He’s just digging himself out of a gambling debt it seems, something mentioned but never used enough to really build tension over what his plan is. As presented, it just feels like a minor fuck up continuing to do so. The comic never quite makes the case he needs to make a big score, it comes off more he wants to.

David Lapham handles the art with color by Hilary Jenkins and lettering by David Lapham. The look of the comic is good. Like the story itself, it doesn’t shine enough nor use its visuals to build an emotional connection. There isn’t visual tension or enough of a personal focus to create caring about what happens to David. It all looks decent but doesn’t quite jump out.

Underheist #1 isn’t a bad debut but it just doesn’t excite. The story is something we’ve seen many times before and what might set itself apart doesn’t get a focus. There also isn’t much time spent on David to really care what happens to him or feel sorry for his choices. Overall, it’s very average.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Worm: A Cuban American Odyssey

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was WAY more fun than it had any reason to be. The concept might sound silly but it worked and worked really well. A perfect release for the season.

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees #2 (IDW Publishing) – They may look like cute animals but there’s a serial killer among them! A twisted tale whose first issue was one of the best of the year.

Beyond Real #1 (Vault Comics) – June discovers we’re in a computer simulation and sets out to meet the world’s creator. The second of Vault’s interesting release experiment!

Punisher #2 (Marvel) – A new Punisher, same ole action. The first issue felt like a back to the roots return for the character and we want to see more over the top kills and action.

Underheist #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A hardboiled heist series with a supernatural twist.

White Widow #2 (Marvel)The first issue was solid fun and we’re hoping for more of the same for the second.

Worm: A Cuban American Odyssey (Metropolitan Books)We already reviewed this one and it’s one of the best of the year. The true story of artist Edel Rodriguez as he escapes Cuba for the US and becomes a world famous artist.

Zawa + the Belly of the Beast #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue had a nice fantasy story to it with amazing art. We’re expecting more and want more.

One Last Job in a first look at Underheist #1 from David and Maria Lapham and Hilary Jenkins

BOOM! Studios has revealed a first look at Underheist #1. The hit Stray Bullets creative team of David & Maria Lapham, along with colorist Hilary Jenkins, brings a hellish new hardboiled heist series in Underheist, available December 13, 2023.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

After a losing fight to gambling addiction, David hits rock bottom and decimates his personal life in the process. He’d do anything for one last chance to get on the straight and narrow and set things right.

He may just be in luck, if you can call it that. Through the grapevine David learns of a heist–one involving a tunnel system that no one knows better than the former NYC subway veteran. One last job and he’s home free. All he needs to do is make it out alive.

Underheist #1 features a main cover by David Lapham, with variants by Dave Johnson and Goran Sudzuka.
