The Sacrificers #1 introduces an intriguing world but lacks details

The Sacrificers #1

Tomorrow is a harmonious paradise thanks to five families who make everything perfect…for the price of one child per household. Now, as that bill comes due, a son expected to give everything for a family that never loved him and an affluent daughter determined to destroy utopia must unite to end one generation’s unnaturally protracted reign. That concept is cool, but The Sacrificers #1 will let you know little about that, barely delivering hints as to what’s to come.

Written by Rick Remender, The Sacrificers #1 is an intriguing start to the series. We’re introduced to a family working a farm whose oldest is kept away in the barn. We’re also introduced to the daughter of a godlike being who doesn’t follow the rules. Why any of this matters isn’t clear as this debut sets things up but explains very little.

The Sacrificers #1 feels like a small sliver of the bigger picture. As a graphic novel where you could continue on, it’d work well as a tease and start but with a break waiting for the next issue, the debut doesn’t deliver enough to make things interesting. The one aspect, the son kept separate from the family, doesn’t quite have the emotional impact it should. We don’t know where he’s going or why. There’s also the aspect of an abusive father, which makes me conflicted about the son being dragged away in shackles. While where he’s going doesn’t seem positive, at least he’s away from the abuse. We should be dreading what’s to come but without an emotional connection between the son and his family, his being dragged away lacks any tug at the heart strings.

Still, Max Fiumara‘s art is beautiful. With color by Dave McCaig and lettering by Rus Wooton, The Sacrificers #1 is great to look at. The characters are interesting. The backgrounds are interesting. There’s some small details that make things stand out. It overall feels like a world Jim Henson might create. It’s fantastic. If only the story was up to the art’s level.

The Sacrificers #1 introduces an intriguing world and potential concept but the first issue really lacks a “why” of it all. It teases what’s to come and lacks context of what’s presented. As is, it’s a piece of the bigger puzzle. This one might be better read as a collection than individual issues.

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Ancient Enemies #5 (Frank Miller Presents) – The series has been solid so far with an intriguing world and story. With just a few issues remaining we’re excited to see where this all goes.

Astonishing Iceman #1 (Marvel) – After the Hellfire Gala, Iceman’s alive!? And he’s part of the resistance!?

Conan the Barbarian #1 (Titan Comics) – A new publisher for Conan means a new beginning and if the Free Comic Book Day release was any indication, we’re in for a treat.

Death of the Venomverse #1 (Marvel) – Carnage wants to be the top dog and is traversing the Multiverse to kill any and all Venoms.

Hellboy & the BPRD 1957 From Below (Dark Horse) – Hellboy, Professor Bruttenholm, and B.P.R.D. agent Archie Muraro investigate an abandoned sawmill that is rumored to be haunted. The Hellboy one-shots tend to be a lot of fun.

Knight Terrors: The Joker #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was full of laughs as we get to see what type of nightmares the Joker experiences.

Little Red Fish (Rosarium Publishing) – An exquisite reimagining of the Iranian Revolution. An aquatic reef held down by an oppressive regime of blood-thirsty heron struggles to rise up in this harrowing tale of self-discovery, heritage, and revolution. Originally released in 2015, we’re excited to explore this story again.

Magneto #1 (Marvel) – Learn how the once die-hard villain emerged as a conflicted figure in the saga of the X-Men!

Parker Girls #9 (Abstract Studios) – The series has been a lot of fun with a great mix of action and humor.

Quest #1 (Image Comics) – Princess Anya’s new husband Prince Devyan is violently abducted by three giant demons at their wedding. Anya sets out on an epic journey with a growing band of loyal warriors, crossing deadly landscapes and battling horrifying demons.
