Deadpool Smashes Records with $260 million Debut

deadpool posterDeadpool destroyed the competition, as well as a hell of a lot of bad guys, as it debuted to an estimated $135.1 million three day domestic weekend and around $150 to $156 million four day weekend. The film is now the most an R-rated film has debuted as well as a February film. This is also the highest opening for a 20th Century Fox film, the previous being Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The film has the record of largest single day in February, in fact all of its days beat the previous record.

The film also earned $125 million in international markets. The film scored the largest industry opening in Russia with $12.4 million as well as the largest Fox opening in 13 other markets including Australia ($10 million); Taiwan ($8.25 million); Brazil ($5.9 million); Hong Kong ($3.8 million); and Malaysia ($2.9 million).

The international amount and domestic puts the film at about $260 million for its first weekend, pretty impressive with a budget of about $58 million. We’ll see what lessons Hollywood learns from this. Maybe we’ll see more R-rated superhero films, but most likely the wrong lessons will be taken away.

In other debuts, How to Be Single came in third with $18.75 million; Zoolander 2 earned $15.65 million for fourth; Where to Invade Next was 18th with $1.03 million; and a few others were in the tens of thousands.

In other movie news Kung Fu Panda 3 dropped to second and earned $19.65 million to bring its domestic total to $93.9 million. The Revenant came in fifth and earned $6.9 million to have a domestic total of $159.2 million. Hail, Caeser! was in sixth and added $6.59 million to its total. Finally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped out of the top five to come in seventh after nine weeks. The film earned $6.19 million to bring its domestic total to $914.8 million and worldwide gross to $2.03 billion. It sits in third for worldwide frosses of all time.

Kung Fu Panda 3 Stays on Top of the Box Office

Kung Fu Panda 3Kung Fu Panda 3 was the top of the box office for the second weekend in a row beating three new films that opened up. The film earned an estimated $21 million to bring its domestic total to $69.1 million. The film has earned $198.1 million worldwide so far after about two weeks.

Three new films didn’t light up the box office. Hail, Caeser! came in second with an estimated $11.4 million. The film has earned mixed reviews, but there’s a fan base for Coen brothers films so it should get above its budget of $22 million. The Choice debuted in fifth earning an estimated $6.1 million, and just behind that in sixth was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which earned an estimated $5.2 million.

The Revenant dropped to third place from last weekend’s second. It earned $7.1 million to bring its domestic total to $149.7 million. In fourth was Star Wars: The Force Awakens which earned $6.89 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently has earned $905.96 million domestically and $1.1 billion in foreign markets. Its total stands at $2.008 billion. The film still sits in third in worldwide grosses and is about $178 million short of passing Titanic to move in to second. It has a long way to go to top Avatar to move in first. It’d need $780 million to get to that spot.

Kung Fu Panda 3 Debuts on Top, Crushing the Competition

Kung Fu Panda 3Kung Fu Panda 3 debuted in first place this weekend earning an estimated $41 million. That’s the largest January opening of all-time. Other debuts this weekend didn’t fair nearly as well. The Finest Hours came in fourth place earning an estimated $10.3 million, Fifty Shades of Black opened in ninth and earned $6.2 million, Jane Got a Gun opened in 17th with $803,000, 2016 Oscar Nominated Short Films earned $505,000 for 21st, and Rabin, the Last Day was 40 with $7,854.

Overall, the box office was up compared to last year with holdover films not dropping much from the previous week. In second place was The Revenant which earned an estimated $12.4 million and in third was Star Wars: The Force Awakens which added $10.78 million to its total. Rounding out the top five was Ride Along 2 which earned an estimated $8.3 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to rake in the cash with it crossing the $900 million mark domestically in the next week as well as crossing the $2 billion mark globally in that same time frame. The film is sitting in third in worldwide earnings (not adjusted) and is about $200 million from moving in to second and $800 million from toppling Avatar from the top spot. There’s a good chance it’ll move in to second, but first is quite a march with some tougher competition coming down the road.

The Revenant Comes Out on Top While Star Wars Moves up to Second

revenant-leoThe Revenant topped the box office this past weekend earning an estimated $16 million. The previous week it came in second. Star Wars: The Force Awakens moved up to second earning an estimated $14.257 million, and last week’s champ Ride Along 2 dropped to third earning an estimated $12.96 million. Three new entries filled fourth, fifth, and sixth place. Dirty Grandpa debuted with $11.525 million, The Boy earned $11.26 million, and The 5th Wave was sixth with $10.7 million.

The box office was down compared to the same weekend last year, and that may have been due to the blizzard hitting a lot of the East Coast.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is nearing $900 million domestically. After this weekend it has earned $879.3 million, and in foreign markets its earned $1.06 billion for a grand total of $1.94 billion.

While the film is the top domestic grosser (not adjusted) of all time, it still has a while to go to take that title worldwide. It currently sits at third and is about $247 million shy of moving in to second place. It’d need $849 million more to move in the top spot.

Star Wars Drops to Third as Ride Along 2 Drives by to First

ride_along_2_0_1439549002It’d eventually happen, and this was the first weekend it was most likely to happen. Ride Along 2 was the top of the box office earning an estimated $34 million. That wasn’t close to the first film’s $41.5 million during the same weekend two years ago for the first film in the series. It was still enough to be in first place.

In second place was The Revenant which earned an estimated $29.5 million in its fourth week. It looks like the film has gotten a boost after it’s award wins and nominations.

Those two films bumped Star Wars: The Force Awakens to third. The film still brought in $25.12 million in its fifth week. The film has earned $856.94 million domestically, $1.012 billion internationally, for a total of $1.87 billion worldwide. It currently is fifth in international grosses, but it will quickly move in to fourth, and should easily move in to third. The film is currently third in all time grosses worldwide, about $320 million shy of Titanic, and $920 million shy of Avatar. There’s a good chance the film will slide in to second place, but it’d need a hell of a second wind to topple the top earner.

The propaganda film (take your pick for who) 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi debuted in fourth earning an estimated $16 million. Daddy’s Home was fifth adding $9.3 million to its total. Norm of the North, which also debuted this week, earned an estimated $6.68 million.

Star Wars Continues to Hold on to First. Revenant Comes on Strong

star-wars-force-awakens-official-posterStar Wars: The Force Awakens continued to hold first place, fighting off The Revenant which beat expectations. Star Wars added $41.63 million to its total while The Revenant earned $38 million after expanding its theater count.

That’s the fourth week in first place for Star Wars. It’s the top domestic earner and first film to cross the $800 million mark domestically. It now stands $812 million. The film also debuted in China earning $53 million which is reported as the largest Saturday/Sunday opening, but it’s also the only film to have opened on a Saturday. It also has the biggest Saturday of all time. The film currently sits at $1.733 billion. It needs another $400 million to move in to second and about $1 billion to move in to first.

For other movies, Daddy’s Home was third with $15 million, The Forest debuted in fourth with $13.1 million and Sisters was fifth at $7.2 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Crosses $1 Billion, Stays in First

star-wars-force-awakens-official-posterThe records keep falling to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film broke even more records this past weekend. The film cross the $1 billion mark worldwide in record time. The film earned an estimated $153.5 million this past weekend, the highest second weekend of all time. It beat the previous record holder, Jurassic World, by $46.9 million. The film has earned $544 million domestically and $546 million internationally for a total of $1.09 billion.

In just two weekends, the film is now the second highest grossing domestic release in 2015 and the fifth worldwide. Avatar holds the domestic record of $760.5 million, and it’s not a question “if” Star Wars will top that, but more likely “when” will it top that. The film is currently fifteenth in the all-time non-adjusted grosses. It would have to over double its earnings, and has yet to open in some key markets like China.

A whole bunch of other films opened up this weekend as well.

Daddy’s Home opened in second place earning an estimated $38.8 million, better than expectations. Joy opened in third with $17.5 million. Concussion, which takes on the NFL and football, opened in sixth with $11 million. The Point Break remake came in eighth earning an estimated $10.2 million. The Hateful Eight opened in limited released coming in eleventh and earning $4.5 million. Also opening in limited release, The Revenant earned an estimated $471,000 and came in 21st; Mr. Six earned $286,847 for 24th place; and 45 Years earned $69,300 for 29th place.
