Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé’s songs knocks off Songbirds & Snakes to take the weekend box office

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé was the top film at the weekend box office debuting with $21 million domestically. While a decent opening, it’s far short of Taylor Swift’s $92.8 million for her Eras Tour film debut. While many probably saw gold in that stat, Beyonce’s more down to earth debut may prevent a rush of the genre. Internationally, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé has grossed $6.4 million for a worldwide debut of $27.4 million.

In second place was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes which grossed an estimated $14.5 million to bring its domestic total to $121.2 million. Internationally, the film has grossed a similar number $122.7 million for a worldwide total of $243.9 million.

In third place, Godzilla Minus One debuted with an estimated $11 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $23.1 million for a worldwide debut of $34.2 million.

Trolls Band Together held on to fourth place with an estimated $7.6 million to bring its domestic total to $74.8 million. Over the week, it grossed $4.4 million internationally to bring that total to $85.8 million for a worldwide total of $160.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was Wish, which Disney might have wished went straight to streaming. The film dropped 62.4% from its debut to gross just $7.4 million. The film has managed just under $42 million in two weeks. International totals aren’t much better with $22.3 million grossed over the week to bring that to $39.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed just $81.6 million.

In comic film news…

The Marvels continues to stumble being knocked out of the top ten after just four weeks. Coming in eleventh, the film added an estimated $2.5 million to its domestic total to bring that to $80.7 million. Things are going a bit better internationally where the film added $4.3 million over the week to bring it to $116.3 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed a little over $197 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 51 films earning $97,199,355 from 38,462 theaters. That’s a dip from the previous weekend’s $116,002,064 from 33,729 theaters and 53 films. The average earning was $2,527.15 which is about a third less than the previous weekend’s $3,439.24.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes repeats in first as Napoleon and Wish stumble

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes held the top spot at the weekend box office. The film grossed $28.2 million to bring its domestic total to $98.4 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $56.2 million for a worldwide total to $154.6 million after two weeks.

With a reported budget of $200 million, it’s hard to not see the $20.4 million domestic opening weekend for Napoleon as anything but a rout. Since its opening the film has grossed $32.5 million domestically, it opened on Wednesday, and $46.3 million internationally. That’s a worldwide total of $78.8 million. It continues an uneven record and result for Ridley Scott and with middling reviews, it’ll be interesting to see what maneuvers this film has to improve its gross.

Walt Disney’s Wish was another bump in the road for the once dominant house of mouse with a weekend total of just $19.5 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $31.7 million since its Wednesday debut with another $17.3 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $49 million. It continues a rough year for Disney which has seen a string of films vastly underperforming. Are people waiting to watch these films on Disney+? Only Disney knows the answer.

Trolls Band Together slipped from second to fourth with $17.5 million over the weekend. The film has grossed $64.5 million domestically and over the week added $5.1 million internationally over the week to bring its total to $81.4 million there. Worldwide, the film has grossed $145.8 million.

Thanksgiving rounded out the top five with $7.3 million to bring its domestic total to $24.2 million. Over the week, the film over doubled its international gross adding $2.5 million to bring that to $4.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just under $29.1 million.

In comic film news…

The Marvels continues to stumble being knocked out of the top five after just three weeks. Coming in sixth, the film added an estimated $6.4 million to its domestic total to bring that to $76.9 million. Things are going a bit better internationally where the film added $15.7 million over the week to bring it to $112 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $188.9 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 53 films earning $116,002,064 from 33,729 theaters. That’s about the same as last weekend’s $115,477,664 from 31,770 theaters and 51 films. The average earning $3,439.24 is similar to the previous weekend’s $3,634.80.

Worldwide, the film has grossed $161.3 million.

The Marvels opens in first but deliver a low for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvels

While it shouldn’t be a surprise that The Marvels opened in first place at the weekend box office, the film was the lowest opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film debuted with an estimated $47 million domestically, short of Ant-Man‘s 2015 opening of $57.2 million. Internationally, the film did about the same with $41.5 million for a worldwide debut of $88.5 million. It continues a string of misses for Disney, while even taken into account the shift in viewing post-pandemic, is struggling at the box office overall. It also will add fuel to the recent backlash and negativity towards Marvel as a whole that the film studio and its comic publishing counterpart need to course correct and find a new and better path.

In second place was Five Nights at Freddy’s after two weeks in first place. The movie added $9 million to its domestic total bringing that to $127.2 million. Internationally, the movie added $21.3 million over the week to bring that total to $124.7 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $251.9 million after three weeks.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour came in third place with a reported $5.9 million to bring its domestic gross to $172.5 million. Internationally, the movie grossed $3.2 million over the week to lift that total to $68.4 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $240.9 million.

Priscilla held steady in fourth place with an estimated $4.8 million to bring its domestic total to $12.7 million. There are no international grosses.

Killers of the Flower Moon rounded out the top five with an estimated $4.7 million to bring its domestic total to $59.9 million. Internationally, the film grossed $10.4 million over the week to bring that tot $77.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $137.1 million.

In comic film news…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem held steady domestically at $118.6 million. Internationally, the movie remained at $61.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $180.5 million.

Blue Beetle domestically remained at $72.5 million. Internationally it remained steady at $56.8 million. The movie has grossed $129.3 million worldwide.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse looks like it remained steady domestically at $381.3 million. Internationally remained at $309.2 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $690.5 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 63 films earning $87,483,659 from 32,496 theaters. That’s about a 33% increase from last weekend’s $63,084,300 from 34,926 theaters and 60 films. The average earning was $2,692.14 this past weekend, about 50% better from the previous weekend’s $1,806.23.
