The box office has had some issues in 2019 and Captain Marvel gave it a much needed power up. The 21st entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivered the seventh largest opening weekend of all time and earned more in three days than the combined totals of any previous three-day weekend so far this year.
With an estimated $153 million earned domestically Captain Marvel is already the top grossing domestic film of the year after one weekend. Based on that opening and past MCU films, the movie should have a domestic earning somewhere above $400 million.
The film played to an audience that was 55% male and 45% female and 64% of the film’s crowd was aged 25 or older. That’s one of the smallest gender divides of a Marvel film and one of the older audiences. Wonder Woman opened with a crowd that was 52% female. The film also earned an “A” CinemaScore.
Internationally, the film earned an estimated $302 million which is the fifth highest international opening weekend of all-time and the sixth largest worldwide debut ever. The top market internationally was China where the filmed earned $89.3 million and is the third highest MCU opening there. The film also boasts the biggest global launch for a female-fronted film and second-largest for superhero film.
The film delivered an opening weekend where the film earned $455 million worldwide.
In second place was How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World which earned an estimated $14.7 million to bring its domestic total to $119.7 million. It added $21.7 million internationally to bring that total to $315.5 million for a worldwide total of $435.2 million.
In third place was Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral which delivered an estimated $12.1 million to bring its domestic total to $45.9 million.
In fourth place was The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part which brought in an estimated $3.8 million to bring its domestic total to $97.1 million. Internationally the film added $3.9 million to bring that total to $67.3 million for a worldwide total of $164.4 million.
Rounding out the top five was Alita: Battle Angel which saw a 55.7% drop from the previous weekend where it was third. The movie earned an estimated $3.2 million to bring its domestic total to $78.3 million. It also added $11.6 million from 74 overseas market to bring that total to $304.3 million and $382.7 million worldwide. That film was targeting as a boost by incel/MRA types in protest of Captain Marvel. Their protest clearly didn’t work showing their buying power is directly inverse to how loud they are online and ability to review bomb films.
In other comic films….
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped from 11th last week to 15th this week earning an estimated $650,000 to bring its domestic total to $188.8 million.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World dropped 45% in the second weekend but it was still able to hold on to first place. The film earned an estimated $30 million to bring its domestic total to $97.7 million.
Internationally, the film earned an estimated $52 million which mostly came from its debut in China where it earned an estimated $33.4 million. The film still has eight markets to release in with the last being Japan on August 23. Internationally the film has earned $277.7 million for a worldwide total that stands at $375.4 million.
In second place was Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral which earned an estimated $27.1 million in its debut week. That’s the fourth largest in the franchise. It received an “A-” CinemaScore from the opening audiences. The film’s opening audience was 67% female and 78% of the crowd was age 25 and over.
In third place was Alita: Battle Angelwhich earned an estimated $7 million. Domestically the film has now earned $72.2 million after three weeks. It also earned $40.4 million internationally from 81 markets to bring that total to $278.2 million for a worldwide total of $350.4 million.
The LEGO Movie 2 came in fourth place with an estimated $6.6 million to bring the domestic total to $91.7 million. Internationally, the film also added $6.1 million to bring the international total to $61.1 million and $152.8 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top five was Green Book which received a massive post Oscar boost. The film saw a 121% jump with an estimated $4.7 million to bring the domestic total to $75.9 million. The film also earned $31.9 million from 63 markets for an international total of $112.1 million and a worldwide total of $188 million.
In comic adaptations…
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse improved from #16 last week to #11 with a post Oscar win boost. The film increased 137.5% with an estimated $2.1 million to bring its domestic total to $187.4 million.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World debuted in first place this weekend with a $55.5 million debut. That’s the largest debut of the year so far and a franchise best. The second film opened with $49.4 million in 2014. The film also earned $2.5 million from an event by Fandango earlier in the month to bring the domestic earning to a little over $58 million.
The film received an “A” CinemaScore and a 91% score on RottenTomatoes from critics. Men made up 51% of the audience the first film to have a majority male audience. The first two films were 45% and 47%. 39% of the audience was aged 25 or older with the first two films being 51% and 44%.
The film is actually in its seventh weekend in foreign markets and has brought in $216.9 million overseas. Worldwide that’s a total of $275 million off of a $129 million budget.
Dropping to second place was Alita: Battle Angel. The film dropped 58% in its second weekend for a three-day $12 million. So far it has earned $60.7 million domestically. Internationally it debuted in China where it earned $62.2 million of its $92.4 million overseas take for the weekend. That’s $202.7 million internationally for a worldwide total of $263.4 million.
In third place was The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part which earned $10 million to bring its domestic total to $83.6 million. The film earned just $10.3 million from 73 foreign markets. The foreign total is just $53 million for a worldwide total of $136.6 million.
Fighting With My Family expanded its theater count to come in fourth. The film earned $8 million for a domestic total of $8.2 million. It opened in four theaters the previous weekend.
Isn’t It Romantic rounded out the top five with an estimated $7.5 million to bring its domestic total to $33.8 million.
When it comes to comic adaptations…
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dipped a few spots to come in at #15 earning an estimated $865,000. The film has earned $184.9 million domestically. With an Oscar win for “Best Animated Feature,” we’ll see if the movie gets a boost over the next week.
Aquaman continues to be right behind that film coming in at #16 and earning an estimated $765,000 to bring its domestic total to $332.9 million.

It was the worst President’s Day Weekend in 15 years but the top five films all starred women or had women taking the lead to save the day.
Alita: Battle Angel beat expectations with an estimated $27.8 million for the three-day weekend and is expected to earn a bit over $33 million for the four-day weekend. Over five days the film will have earned around $41 million which is well ahead the $30 million expectation. Still, the film has a $170 million price tag and would need somewhere around $500-$550 million worldwide to break even.
Internationally the film debuted in 11 markets last weekend and expanded to 86 markets this weekend. There it earned $56.1 million to bring its foreign earnings to $94.3 million. It’ll release in China and Japan on February 22.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part dropped from first to second earning an estimated $21.2 million to bring its domestic total to $62.7 million. Over the four days it’s expected to earn $27 million to bring its domestic earnings to around $70 million. Internationally it added $12 million from 69 markets to bring its global total to just shy of $98 million. It releases in France and Italy this coming week and in Australia on March 21.
Rebel Wilson’s Isn’t It Romantic opened in third place with an estimated $14.2 million over the three days and $16.5 million for the four days. That’ll but the film around $23 million over six days since it debuted on Wednesday.
In fourth place was What Men Want which earned an estimated $10.9 million over the three days and expected to earn about $12.5 million over four. That brings its domestic total shy of $38 million. The film also earned $2.2 million from six overseas markets for an international total of $2.5 million.
Rounding out the top five was Happy Death Day 2U which earned an estimated $9.8 million over three days and $11 million for the four. Since it opened on Wednesday the film should be just above $15 million over the six days. It was expected to earned a little over $20 million. Internationally the film earned $11.8 million in 41 markets. It opens in Ital and Russian on February 28 and Japan on July 12. With just a $9 million budget the film is quite fine.
In comic book films….
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped two spots from the previous weekend to come in at #11. It earned an estimated $2 million to bring its domestic total to $182.7 million after 10 weeks. With foreign earnings of $173.3 million the film has earned $356 million worldwide.
Aquaman has crossed $331 million domestically and is now the second highest grossing domestic release for a DC Extended Universe film only behind Wonder Woman’s $412.6 million. It came in at #12 for the weekend down from last weekend’s #8. The film earned $1.9 million to bring its domestic total to $331.4 million. Internationally the film has earned $799.4 million to bring its worldwide total to $1.131 billion.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part was the top of the box office with an estimated $34.4 million opening but that’s about $20 million below expectations. It was predicted to open with $50-55 million which is still below the $69 million opening of the first film in February 2014. It’s also below the $53 million for The LEGO Batman Movie in February 2017 but it is better than the $20.4 million for The LEGO Ninjago Movie in September 2017. It’s likely too many films in too short a time is an issue or the originality of the first has diminishing returns.
The film has gotten good reviews though with an “A-” CinemaScore but an audience that’s 57% male has the series continue to skewer male.
Internationally the film brought in an estimated $18.1 million from 63 markets. The first film brought in $18.4 million from about 30 fewer markets. The sequel still needs to open in Mexico, France, Italy, and Australia.
In second place was What Women Want which opened in the middle of expectations with an estimated $19 million. The film had weak reviews though the audience gave it an “A-” CinemaScore. With just a $20 million budget, the film should do well.
It looks like poor press didn’t hurt Cold Pursuit which exceeded expectations with $10.8 million. The audience was 58% male and 79% aged 25 or older. It received a “B-” CinemaScore and should have a fairly short run in the box office.
In fourth place was The Upside bringing in an estimated $7.2 million to bring its domestic total to $85.8 million. It also brought in $8.9 million internationally to bring its worldwide total to $94.7 million.
Rounding out the top five was Glass with an estimated $5.8 million. Domestically the film has earned $98.5 million. Internationally the film added $6.6 million to bring that total to $123 million and $221.5 million worldwide.
In comic film adaptations…
Aquaman dropped from fourth to #8 with an estimated $3.3 million to bring its domestic total to $328.5 million. Worldwide it has earned $1.120 billion.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continues to play right behind Aquaman dropping from fifth to #9 with an estimated $3 million. Its domestic total stands at $179.8 million. Worldwide the film has earned $352.6 million.

Sometimes sequels are lazy cashgrabs, (especially animated sequels– looking at you, Cars movies!) but the followup to the movie everyone thought was going to be terrible but was actually groundbreaking and amazing is almost equally as… um… “awesome.”
I say “almost” because it’s hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube for the original conceit of the movie: that the Lego toys (and our characters) exist in the real world in a suburban basement somewhere in what was an extended metaphor about capitalism, fascism, consumerism, playing with your toys, and having childlike wonder and fun with them.
Having expended that creativity in the twist ending (and further exploring it in both the Lego Batman and Ninjago movies), the only answer in the sequel is to double down on what else worked so well in the first — humor, songs, childlike anarchy and imagination — and move forward. While this isn’t quite the revelation the first one was, it’s still easily the best movie of 2019 (so far).
Our story begins where the last one ended (literally) with the arrival of Duplo aliens from the “Sistar” system. Now 5 years later, the aliens continue to come and destroy anything that our heroes build in the former metropolis of Bricksburg, which is now a Mad Max style apocalyptic wasteland, complete with broken Statue of Liberty!
However, this doesn’t dampen the spirit of Emmett (Chris Pratt) who continues to think everything is awesome. The more cynical realistic Lucy / “Wyldstyle” (Elizabeth Banks) along with Metalbeard (Nick Offermen), Benny (Spaceship!Charlie Day), UniKitty (Allison Brie), and Batman (Will Arnett) rule over the city protecting it from incursion and destruction. But Emmett starts to have dreams of an upcoming “Mom-ageddon” where all the Legos are put into storage forever.
When one day a mysterious spacewoman named General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz) shows up to “invite them all to a wedding,” she kidnaps all of our heroes except Emmett and takes them to the Sistar system. Our optimistic construction worker then has to travel into the great beyond up the staircase and to the new galaxy to rescue them.
On his way he encounters Rex Dangervest (also Chris Pratt in a dual role) whose super awesome spaceship is piloted by Raptors. Rex is super hardcore, which gives him not only “master builder” powers but “master destructor” powers. The two new “vest friends” plan to disrupt the wedding ceremony between Queen Whatevra Wa’Nabi (Taraji P. Henson) and Batman as it is the final sign of the Momageddon.
That plot doesn’t really do the film justice however, because there is so much more going on at every level. The film is infused with joyous songs. The infectious conformity anthem of “Everything Is Awesome” is one-upped by a song literally meant to brainwash our heroes by claiming that “this song’s going to get stuck inside your head.” And it really does.
In “Gotham City Guys,” Queen Whatevra seduces Batman in what is perhaps the funniest sequence in the film for comic fans as she plays on Batman’s insecurities and rivalry with a certain Kryptonian. This is also a good time to mention that Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot also both appear as their DCEU characters in some truly excellent cameos. But don’t worry– Green Lantern is still played by Jonah Hill from the first movie! (What, they were going to get Ryan Reynolds?)
Returning musical champs The Lonely Island also make an appearance singing a song about how cool the credits are– which definitely make you want to sit through the credits. And Queen Whatevra channels evil Disney anthems like “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” “Be Prepared,” and “Mother Knows Best” singing a song all about how she’s definitely definitely definitely not evil, she promises.
What really makes this film work are the multiple layers of meaning. And for this discussion I will have to delve into minor plot spoilers, but not ones which adults wouldn’t see coming from a mile away in a kids movie. Of course as adults we recognize that the “Sistar System” is actually ruled by the sister of the young boy we saw in the first film.
What is actually happening in the war between Bricksburg and her system is sibling rivalry played out large. An older brother feels that his little sister is breaking and stealing his toys (which he’s not wrong about by the way). And a little sister just wants to play Legos with her older brother. Taking in stride the meaning of the first film, we see the son becoming his own father: demanding the conformity to his type of play and excluding those who won’t play along.
And we also have the eponymous Mom of the Momageddon (Maya Rudolph) who is doing what moms everywhere do: if you can’t play nicely with each other, then I’m going to have to take away the source of the conflict (the offending toys). Again, these are minor spoilers, but they’re also pretty clear to adults who read between the lines of the early plot and who are aware of the conceit of the first film. Also, let’s take one moment here and point out how amazing Maya Rudolph is. She is the shining star at the center of this film’s universe, bathing everything in a warm glow at the perfect intersection of awesome, funny, and super serious. She’s the perfect mom.
There’s also deeper message here that emphasizes the original (covert) feminism of the first Lego Movie, even directly pointing out that Lucy was the one who did most of the heroic things but Emmett is still seen as the leader and the hero. But this film is implicitly making the case for opening up the toy box for everyone, and not just everyone in general, but specifically for young girls. It should also be noted that the central players of the Sistar galaxy are also voiced by women of color (Haddish, Beatriz) — another implicit demand for playing with everyone.
Gatekeeping is endemic in our fan culture, and nowhere is it more apparent than among self-professed fans who seem most intent on keeping women out of the fandom. The same mentality also infects the toy aisle of your local favorite big box store, which is still one of the most unnecessarily gender-segregated areas left in America.
The idea that Legos and building sets are only for girls, and therefore we have to create special gendered Legos for them is as silly as it is retrogressive. And yet, Lego has done just that, haven’t they?
The strongest message that we got at the end of the film is simply to play with one another, and allow different forms of play and imagination to work together. Spoiler alert: when the brother and sister stop fighting, they create a beautiful new Utopia for the Lego heroes from both universes to live in.
There’s another great moment near the climax of the third act where “Everything is Awesome” is turned on its head and Lucy starts singing how everything’s not awesome, but it can be if we all work together and put aside differences and misunderstandings. Essentially, it’s a message to not go Hard AF at each other, because all that brings is destruction and unhappiness.
There couldn’t be a better lesson for 2019, and this was made all the more poignant when I saw this film at a critics preview screening the same night as the State of the Union speech. Everything’s not awesome, but there’s a way forward if we can hope and dream of a better world and work to bridge misunderstandings in order to confront the real evils that exist out there.
Note that this isn’t some mealy-mouthed centrist plea for bipartisanship or something of that nature. This is more of a plea to an increasingly fractured left and center who can so easily fall into the traps of purity tests or even engaging in ridiculous activities like re-litigating the 2016 primary.
One of the biggest lessons of this Lego movie is the fight about who started the war between Bricksburg and the aliens. “You started it.” “No you started it.” It’s the oldest, childish argument in the world, and it’s time to move past things like that to help make our world a better place.
The film is also incredibly funny, with jokes coming a mile a minute. You will want to re-watch several times, and maybe see it out of the theater because you are laughing so hard you will miss the next joke. There are beautiful and hilarious Easter eggs and callbacks to the previous film, but nothing that presents a barrier to anyone who didn’t see it.
The film does bog down a little bit in its second act, but it more than makes up for it with an amazing ending. The spirit and morality and hopefulness of this film make it something that will make you happy and want to play with your toys and hug your kids.
Everything’s not awesome, but it can be if we’ll listen to The Lego Movie 2.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been having a hell of a year when it comes to movies. Not only was there a documentary, there was a biopic, and now she’ll be in the upcoming The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.
According to director Mike Mitchell:
These movies are so full of surprises. And we were thinking, ‘Who’s the last person you would think to see in a Lego film as a minifig?’ Ruth Bader Ginsburg!
She said, ‘Of course, I’d love to be a Lego figure. That would be cool.
Mitchell also said that a minifigure will be released of the Justice and come with a gavel.
