20 Fists #1 (Source Point Press) – Described as a story about “fist fights and bad romance” that’s all we need to know to get us to read this first issue.
Beatnik Buenos Aires (Fantagraphics) – Set in 1963, this graphic novel celebrates a time in Argentine history when its art scene blossomed.
Beta Ray Bill #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was full of emotion and we’re hoping for more of the same with this as Beta Ray Bill really begins his journey to find himself.
Black Widow #6 (Marvel) – This series has been full of action and we expect more. Solid story and amazing art equals a must read for us!
BRZRKR #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue was full of action and enough to get us to want to check out more. This is a summer popcorn film in comic form.
Cold Dead War #2 (Heavy Metal) – War action featuring zombies! Yeah, we’re in for it.
Friend of the Devil: A Reckless Book (Image Comics) – Ed Brubaker, Jacon Phillips, and Sean Phillips return for a new graphic novel featuring Ethan Reckless. The first was fantastic pulp noir entertainment and we’re expecting more of the same.
Harley Quinn #2 (DC Comics) – Future State delivered a new direction for Harley Quinn and this series is putting her in that direction. We really enjoyed the first issue that has Harley attempting to settle in her new role as hero.
Helm Greycastle #1 (Image Comics) – A new Latinx fantasy about a group of adventurers torn between saving a prince or helping the people.
The Marvels #1 (Marvel) – A journey through Marvel’s history spanning decades written by Kurt Busiek with art by Yildiray Cinar.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25 (Marvel) – We’d be lying if we said we weren’t intrigued my the new take on “The Clone Saga”.
The Modern Frankenstein #1 (Heavy Metal/Magma Comix) – A new twist on the classic tale. A surgeon wants to further medical science by any means necessary. So how far will the young medical student attracted to him go?
My Little Pony/Transformers II #1 (IDW Publishing) – The concept might be silly but the first volume was a lot of fun bringing the Transformers to the Pony’s world. Now, they’re heading to Cybertron!
Nuclear Family #3 (AfterShock) – We think we know what’s going on with this alternate history story but we’re not totally sure, so we absolutely want to read this one!
Robin #1 (DC Comics) – Damian strikes out in his own series and we’re here for it. This is a character that grew on us and we want to see if he can do so more.
Shadow Doctor #3 (AfterShock) – Based on a true story, the series is about a Black Doctor who has to go to Al Capone for money to start his business. It’s been amazing so far.
Shadowman #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – We’ve read the first issue and the entire team has loved it. It’s a fantastic start for the new series and great introduction to the character.
Snatched #1 (Scout Comics) – If you thought the drug game was deadly, wait until you see what goes down in the hair trade. Wait… what!?
Stake #2 (Scout Comics) – The first issue was absolutely fantastic and a nice take on the vampire genre. Mixing social media with good action, this is a series that we want to sink our teeth in to.
Summoners War Legacy #1 (Image Comics) – The popular mobile game comes to comics.
Teen Titans Academy #2 (DC Comics) – Who is Red X? Lets face it, that’s what we all want to find out. The first issue was decent but followed a concept we’ve seen before with fun characters but not a lot new… so far.
Your Turn to Die Vol. 1 (Yen Press) – The concept is basically Saw with a group of people but it’s so damn good. Check it out if you like that concept of puzzle-solving where you die if you fail.
Teen Titans Academy #2

The questions mount around the new school formed by the original New Teen Titans: What’s going on with Billy Batson’s access to the powers of Shazam, what dark secret is Raven’s new pupil Dane hiding, and who’s masquerading as the new Red X?
Heroes training the next generation in a school is nothing new. The X-Men was built on the concept. The Avengers have done it. There have been numerous mentor programs within the DC Universe. Now, the Teen Titans put their spin on the concept with Teen Titans Academy #1. It’s an interesting debut that sets up some of the key players while hinting at the conflict to come.
That conflict was show in DC’s Future State where we found out about the academy and the death of its students. A concept that’s also not really knew. But, that “future story” harkened back to Titans history, specially Nightwing and Red X. And that’s where a lot of the debut issue revolves around.
Writer Tim Sheridan ties what’s possibly to come with the present as the students gather to the island for the start of the school year. Beyond introducing the cast and getting the teachers some overdue interaction, the issue mainly focuses on Nightwing and Red X. This is a part of DC history I don’t know so much of the concern or interesting aspects went over my head. But, you get a sense that this wasn’t a good time and it’s an ominous thing. Sheridan gives just enough for new readers, like me, won’t feel lost or scratching their heads as to the big deal.
The story really is an introduction laying out key characters, their personalities, and powers. The original Teen Titans get time to interact and remind us of their dynamic as well. In many ways it all feels like “coming home”. It also feels familiar. There’s very much an X-Men quality to it all with the original members training the next generation. That’s not a bad thing as the formula worked very well and was a lot of fun. Teen Titans Academy #1 sets things up with a playful charm about it all also nailing down that “fun” aspect to it all.
Rafa Sandoval does an impressive job of keeping things clean on the page. There’s a lot packed in at times but the pages and panels never feel like there’s too much there. Jordie Tarragona handles the ink, with Alejandro Sanchez on color, and lettering by Rob Leigh. Together, the visuals of the comic have a bit of a light (not a bad thing) style to it all. There’s nothing dark or brooding about the art. But, there’s also something ominous about it all as well. There’s something underlying the story and the art style helps enhance that in some ways. This is the light before the dark.
Teen Titans Academy #1 is a solid start to the series. While it doesn’t go off in a bold original direction, it does deliver a solid take on the concept it uses. The new characters are interesting and the original team is great together. It’s a comic that you know there are hard times ahead but in the present, things are fun, enjoyable, and positive. There’s a charm and innocence about it, which also makes it a superhero comic that’s unique for the stands.

Carnage: Black, White, and Blood #1 (Marvel) – The various “color” comics coming out have been solid and we’re excited to check out a new one.
Harley Quinn #1 (DC Comics) – A new volume kicking off from Future State. That mini-event had a great take on the character and we’re hoping this continues that direction.
Morrison Hotel (Z2 Comics) – The influential band gets an anthology focused on their impact and the lore about them.
Rabid World #1 (Scout Comics) – A rabies-like disease has broken out around the world. This is a story of two couples, one trying to survive and the other trying to save the world.
The Recount #3 (Scout Comics) – The series has been amazing so far following the follow out of a corrupt President and those rising up to exact vengeance against anyone that supported him.
Shadow Doctor #2 (AfterShock) – The true story about a Black doctor in the 1930s who turned to the mob to get the money he needed to start a practice.
Stray Dogs #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was fantastic. A small dog winds up in a new home not knowing how they got there. Flashes of their former life hint at murder. It’s an interesting series, a noir murder mystery from the perspective of a dog.
Teen Titans Academy #1 (DC Comics) – The Teen Titans decide to train and teach the next generation of heroes. But, we know the possible deadly future that is ahead for them.
