Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Trees01_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in. Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out.

Top Pick: Trees #1 (Image Comics) – Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive. Beginning a new science fiction series by Warren Ellis and Jason Howard.

Black Science Vol. 1: Hot to Fall Forever (Image Comics) – Collecting the first six issues of the series, Black Science is a trippy sci-fi filled adventure series that’s one of the most exciting on the market.

Chew/Revival #1 (Image Comics) – The two comic series come together for a fun story that shows it from both series’ perspectives. It shouldn’t work, but it does!

Doctor Spektor #1 (Dynamite) – Another Gold Key release from Dynamite, this one has Mark Waid writing!

The Fuse #4 (Image Comics) – Take a detective series and put it on a space station. So good.

Ms. Marvel #4 (Marvel) – The Marvel series has been a breath of fresh air, introducing us to a new heroine, diverse cast, and some amazing art.

The Midas Flesh #6 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – This series is out of this world, but a fun cast, action packed story, and awesome art as well. One of our favorites!

Mind MGMT #22 (Dark Horse) – One of the best comics on the market. Matt Kindt‘s series is moving along and shows what can be done with the long game when it comes to storytelling. So many layers, so freaking good.

Skullkickers #27 (Image Comics) – Comics can be fun and writer Jim Zub‘s off the rails fantasy adventure is a perfect example of that.

Star Wars: Rebel Heist #2 (Dark Horse) – Another Matt Kindt entry. The talented writer has been knocking it out of the park when it comes to this series so far.

Review: Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1

star wars rebel heist 1 coverA young Rebel meets one of the Alliance’s best for his first mission. But the young man’s hero worship is crushed by the reality of Han Solo. A botched escape, a ship that doesn’t work—could it be that Solo is just a lucky bumbler whose luck has run out?

When I heard writer Matt Kindt was penning a Star Wars series, I immediately got excited. Even with recent news that stories like these are no longer official Star Wars cannon, what Kindt has created is an exciting action comic that focuses on who Han Solo is through the eyes of a Rebel recruit. That perspective is fun and interesting, and sucks in the reader in, making the story east to relate to. Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1 isn’t about crazy galactic battles, or the Rebel’s ongoing battle with the Empire. The story is about how batshit insane Han Solo must look to the average person. And the funniest thing is, until this comic brought it up, I never thought about it. That realization evolves for that Rebel recruit, much like it did for me as a reader. As things go off the rails, and opinions change, I found mine doing the same. That’s part of the fun of the comic.

Working with Kindt is artist Marco Castiello, whose pencils are enhanced through Dan Parsons‘ inking and Gabe Eltaeb‘s coloring. The look of the comic is solid, with characters, designs, and elements that are identifiable in a world most reading this will be familiar with. Characters look like they should, vehicles fit known designs, and the mood and color matches the world this story takes place on. It’s good work, that has the action smoothly flowing on the comic page.

Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1 throws you into familiar territory with characters you know, and a world you know. The perspective though is new, and voice interesting. Mixing action and humor, I found myself getting to the end with a smile on my face, having wrapped up the first issue of an entertaining adventure. One that got me to laugh, and took me for a ride. Even if you’re not a Star Wars fan, this first issue is a fantastic start and a great read. I figured Kindt would deliver something special, and it looks like he has.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

CBLDF_Liberty-1It’s another week of solid releases as we head into Free Comic Book Day this weekend. There’s lots being offered and it’s another difficult week to choose ten books to highlight. No matter, when folks get to their shops this Saturday to celebrate, there’s more than enough excellent books, something for everyone, for you to also purchase! We went through this week’s releases to highlight some of the top books you should be checking out, with lots of first issues.

Top Pick: CBLDF Presents Liberty (Image Comics) – This hardcover collects every CBLDF issue from 2008 to 2012. That’s some awesome stories from lots of fantastic creators. Plus there’s a bonus, all proceeds from this collection benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s work protecting the freedom to read!

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) – We already know this book will be the 800 lb gorilla out there. The pre-orders are a staggering amount for recent comic releases, this book will easily top the month. Peter Parker is back and where Dan Slott takes him from here should be an interesting read.

Atomic Robo: Knights of the Golden Circle #1 (Red 5 Comics) – It’s Atomic Robo, do you need more of a reason to read this? Atomic Robo has always been all-ages fun that truly can be enjoyed by both adults and kids. If you’ve never checked out a volume, this start of a new one is a good jumping on point.

Batman Eternal #4 (DC Comics) – I questioned if we needed a new Batman series, let alone a weekly one. We needed this series which focuses on more than just Batman and moves the character that is Gotham City in a solid direction.

Darklight (Archaia/BOOM! Studios) – A new sci-fi graphic novel following three races that need to work together to save the universe. You can read our interview with the writer here.

Rai #1 (Valiant) – A new series from Valiant who consistently produces some of the most entertaining comics. Out of all of the publishers Valiant is consistent in what they produce, and it’s all been good.

Southern Bastards #1 (Image) – Welcome to Craw County, Alabama, home of Boss BBQ, the state champion Runnin’ Rebs football team…and more bastards than you’ve ever seen. When you’re an angry old man like Earl Tubb, the only way to survive a place like this…is to carry a really big stick. It’s writer Jason Aaron doing the excellence that he does.

Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1 (Dark Horse) – I questioned putting this on the list due to Disney’s recent decision to jettison the expanded Star Wars universe. This first issue was too much fun to not include though. From writer Matt Kindt, I expected no less.

V-Wars #1 (IDW Publishing) – The book series comes to comics as a conspiracy has caused mankind to go to war with vampires.

Vertigo Quarterly #1 (Vertigo) – Vertigo doing an anthology? Yes please!
