Review: Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi #1

Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi #1

As we strive on in our journey of life, people often don’t take a chance to reflect.  We get swept up in our everyday troubles and never really take a chance to smell the flowers. We’re always looking for our next ship to arrive, rather than enjoy the current destination. We never really ruminate on how we got where we are.

It’s not until you get older that you start to see it’s the journey that makes you. It is what makes you resilient. It’s what prepares you for the road ahead. In Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi #1, we find a fan favorite’s voyage thus far, in the Mirror Universe.

We find Troi back on Earth as she reflects on what got her here, and exactly what she had to sacrifice, as we begin back on Betazed, where we find her giving up her people as a pawn piece to the Empire. We soon find out just how skilled a mind she is, as she meticulously manipulates Picard and the crew of the Stargazer to take out the insurrectionists defying her rule as administrator. The final stroke that imbued her to Picard is her betrayal of her closest advisor, showing that she would do anything for power. By the issue’s end, this version of Troi will do anything to grab power, including murder.

Overall, Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi #1 is an intriguing take on my personal favorite from the Star Trek: The Next Generation, one that proves that sometimes a mind is more dangerous than any man made weapon. The story by Nijkamp is intractably woven. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, this issue shows what a missed opportunity it was for this series to have never gotten a chance to play in this universe.

Review: Star Trek: The Mirror War – Geordi

Star Trek: The Mirror Wars – Geordi

As a fan of Star Trek, I have a different type of love for each of the series. Part of becoming a fan of anything, is being able to identify yourself within the story.  As each series, there was always that open character that stood out. As in the original series, there was Sulu and but mostly Spock.

This is where Star Trek: The Next Generation separates itself from all the other Star Trek franchises. As it not one or two characters that the audience empathizes with.  As what Roddenberry did with that franchise, was endear that cast of characters to the audience.  In the one-shot, Star Trek: The Mirror War – Geordi, one of ST:TNG’s favorite characters, one who gets his limits pushed.

WE find the Mirror Universe version of Geordi La Forge, being tortured by a mysterious figure, as he shows his resolve while trying to figure just how he got caught. As the reader soon finds out that he got sent on a secret mission by Picard  and that despite the pain inflicted, he actually enjoys it., as he has gone through much worse growing up.  AS we find out how he betrayed rthe owman he loved just so that he could move up the ranks. By issue’s end, we find out Troi was the interrogator and it was all a test.

Overall, Star Trek: The Mirror War – Geordi is a twisted tale in the Mirror Universe that shows darker shades of a familiar character. The story by Holtham is astounding. The art by the creative team is great. Altogether, one of the best stories IDW has done within Star Trek.

Review: Star Trek: The Mirror War – Data

Star Trek: The Mirror War - Data

Much like similar franchises, there are certain generations tied to different eras within the Star Trek Universe. As my father’s generation grew up watching the original series and also the movies. Then there’s my generation who grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation and the companion series universe that followed, even enjoying the prequel series, Enterprise. As people are drawn to the series for different reasons.

I can honestly say that the original cast’s movies were better done than the ones that followed ST:TNG. That is not to say that TNG’s movies were not all bad, and the one that got me because of the ending was Star Trek: Nemesis. This movie is where Data sacrificed himself for the crew and the ship, something that fans did not really get to reckon with until the 1st season finale of Picard. As most fans including me did not realize how much we loved the character until then, thankfully Celeste Bronfman and Roberta Ingranata gives us this one-shot with our favorite android in Star Trek: The Mirror War – Data.

We find the version of Data in the Mirror Universe onboard the ISS Enterprise-D, where the crew have uncovered a device which could change the fortunes, but some including Barclay feels that it may be a Romulan trap. Data starts to get suspicious of Barclay, who acts inconspicuous, which only stokes Data’s distrust. It is not only until Barclay gets into a simulation on the Holodeck that Data discovers that at the center of Barclay’s unusual behavior, is his entrenched hate for the Klingons and a rival family, who blames his family for the Klingons attacking their town,  thereby starting a blood war. Data convinces Barclay to uncover evidence that the rival family is at the root of it all, leading the two to go back to his home planet. By issue’s end, the duo uncovers the truth, but not all goes as planned, leaving the main perpetrator dead without paying for their original sin.

Overall, Star Trek: The Mirror War – Data is an interesting mystery set in the Mirror Universe. The story by Bronfman is exciting and seething with intrigue. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, a story that is fun for Data fans as we see a version of him when logic is at the center of his motivation but of course it works very differently and much more sinister in the Mirror Universe.
