SONY’s Madame Web is a new low but how does it compare to the Spider-Man franchise?

Madame Web opened this past week to brutal reviews and a brutal box office. It was a low for SONY’s Spider-Man franchise which overall, is more successful than is given credit. But, how does it compare? Which films rank the highest? We crunched the numbers.

  • Numbers have been gathered and presented “raw” and not adjusted
  • There’s also an adjusted amount that uses a US inflation calculator
  • Worldwide totals are then also adjusted using the US inflation calculator giving a rough estimate
  • COVID lockdowns went into place in 2020 greatly impacting the box office and theaters which have yet to recover fully
  • The highest amount is in bold

Overall, the SONY Spider-Man franchise has been a solid one grossing just under $976 million per film worldwide adjusted for inflation, but, beyond the clear Marvel tie-ins the newest era of releases has been all over. For every Venom there’s a Morbius. And even praised films like the award winning animated films took a bit to find its audience.

The Marvels opens in first but deliver a low for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvels

While it shouldn’t be a surprise that The Marvels opened in first place at the weekend box office, the film was the lowest opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film debuted with an estimated $47 million domestically, short of Ant-Man‘s 2015 opening of $57.2 million. Internationally, the film did about the same with $41.5 million for a worldwide debut of $88.5 million. It continues a string of misses for Disney, while even taken into account the shift in viewing post-pandemic, is struggling at the box office overall. It also will add fuel to the recent backlash and negativity towards Marvel as a whole that the film studio and its comic publishing counterpart need to course correct and find a new and better path.

Five Nights at Freddy’s debuts with an impressive $78 million domestically

Five Nights at Freddy's

It might be a highlight that dual streaming/theater debuts can work.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was finally knocked out of first place. The film came in second for the weekend with an estimated $14.7 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $149.3 million so far. The Exorcist: Believer hung on in fifth place with a reported $3.1 million to bring its domestic total to $59.4 million. Over the week, it added $7.6 million to its international total to bring that to a little over $61 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $120.4 million.
